big nyc....lol

with the vibe dc heads bring to the floor...

...and the house life it has...

...with only 500,000 in the city...

...as opposed to 5,000,000 in manhattan...

...this is not to mention the surrounding areas...

...what the world would be like if DC had that population...

hah. i'm sure it was a fabulous night. good guest dj for sure.

It was nice to have a club full of people who were aware of the music and talent they were there to hear. The vibe in the air felt different. Some guessed it was because of the Baltimore peeps in the house, others guessed NY peeps ... Could have been either or both or none. I have yet to be able to distinguish one from the other without asking.
-----
Mr. Regisford kept the crowd dancing and whoot whooting all night long. I read someone's comment on another board that described his set as a megamix of 88-93 (Dj Chuck), a friend of mine described it as a sampler set. I tend to agree. Perhaps it has to do with playing in a city for the first time. There's what you hear the city likes, there's what you play at home ... When you get to the new city and it's hard to tell which way to go, you just lay out as many combination of beats as you can. There was a lot presented - Almost too much as there were easily parts I couldn't keep up with
----
Two things that threw me that he did were: Start blending a song into a mix and then cut it short. His selections were choice so whenever a track got cut short, I'd have to find another beat to groove to and as my poise/balance leaves much to be desired - ahem - I flailed a few times. However, as this was my first time hearing Timmy and not having had much prior aural knowledge of him, what I'm describing could be his technique and I'm just not used it. The second thing was the fade in and out of songs. A friend I'd asked to tell me about Timmy weeks before had mentioned this. Again, just something I wasn't used to it. Last night, someone explained to me that at the Shelter when he does this, the place is packed full of people who sing the lyrics back to him so there isn't the lull I noticed here. We just didn't know what to do.
--
I recognized more tracks than I thought I would but I suppose that's one of the pluses of a sampler set.
-------
Did I enjoy the night? You'd better believe I did. Although my review might read as if I didn't, don't be fooled. My approach to Djs and music is 95% my sense of the music and night - ergo no track listing - I try not to pay too much attention (so I remember later), I pay attention to the feelings being invoked by the music.
-
He definitely took me on a few mini journeys that held more than enough promise of the depths Mr. Regisford has taken many and will take many others. Perhaps I'm odd but this promise in the form of the mini journeys further solidified Timmy's reputation to me and made the night/his set special.
--------
Somehow I'm tying all this into some of the complaints people have made about the music not moving forward and Djs not taking enough chances. Is it all a one sided experience? Nope. Yeah the Dj came to us and played but at some point I think it becomes my responsibility to seek out my own unique experience with the Dj. In this case either by checking Timmy out again at Shelter (which will definitely happen) or catching him elsewhere. My interest was peaked before I heard him here and now that I have, I'm even more interested.
-
Much respect and thanks for the music Mr. Regisford.

per shadrach, the first few hours he played what you'd expect to hear, but the last hour or so he finally played a bit more challenging to the crowd, pulling out stuff he hadn't heard before ... all in all, a good experience for dc. someone had said it felt like a bit of a concert/show but it was a good one.

man must be tired, back at amtrak an hour after he got off the decks to get back for shelter

One word that quickly comes to mind about last night: intense. I still don’t know exactly how to describe last night in so many words but it was truly one of those magical nights that will go down with me as one of the best I have ever had at a club. Last night truly reaffirmed my love for this city, my friends, and this music that up until a few months ago could not stand to listen for more than an hour or so.

From the minute I got in the club listening to Sam and Taha playing a set that was just as memorable as Timmy’s was to a little after four when I called it a night, the place never let up. Timmy was everything I expected and more. Definitely looking forward to making my personal pilgrimage of sorts to the Mecca of house music in the future but last night was definitely suffice in terms of getting my share of the Maestro (for now) and I hope Timmy was just as impressed with D.C. as I’m sure most of the dancers and heads were of him last night. Great to meet Ayo and THX-1138 and seeing old friends: darrow, mhd, and 6 23 along with Sam of course. Would love to go into more detail regarding tracks and all the other stuff but Timmy was off the hook and he still had the effect on me that he did when I first saw him years ago. Respect to everyone that made a night like last night happen.

My main revelations Sat night were

a) I am letting life's pressures and routines distract me from my love and enjoyment of music and dancing.

b) I have had the above revelation before, as recently as August when I went to MJQ in Atlanta, so I need to pull it together a bit.

Musically, Sat night was hot. Though my own no-so-little back/leg problem has been plaguing me for a bit, I danced hard almost the entire time I was there, which was about 5 hours. Sam and Taha were on when I arrived and bangin' it already. I think my only desire initially is that I expected to hear a few more vocals in the early moments to help me get in the mood, but I think by 11, Sam and Taha had been playing for a bit. By the time they were done, I knew I was in trouble because I was already hurting!

Sam, do you remember what you played when you got on the mic and let the uninitiated know about your thoughts on drinks on the dancefloor? It was a deep, instrumental cut.

Timmy was downright evil. Eeeevil. I get in these moments where I don't know whether to cry, scream, laugh, or do all of that at the same time and Timmy got me there many times. He did lose me for a bit there, from about 3:30 for 20 mins or so (the time in effect without switching back the clocks). I'm not sure if I was just tired or whether he was playing some cuts that, though interesting, didn't really have much impact/variation.

I have to admit, though there were many more dancers and "heads" than usual (and I loved that sooooo much), their numbers didn't totally outweight the knucklehead factor at Club 5. I rarely get belligerent but I literally had to tell two drink-carrying, drunk college girls to get the f*** out of my way if they were not going to dance. They just happened to plop themselves right in front of me, drinks sloshing around in their hands and were not trying to move. After having one drink spilled on me prior to that, I was in no mood for more.

All in all, and despite the vodka/cranberry on my jeans, the night was beautiful. I'm still hearing Timmy's mix of Earth People's "Dance" and Blue Six's "Pure" in my head.

eeeevill :D

And it was ofcourse good to see all the good people from this board thx1138, ayo, 6 23, derrick (I'll take care of it tonight Derrick), joeb, mhd, and others whose dhp names I don't know.

Good seeing you again Darrow. You seemed to have no noticeable leg/hip pains Saturday cause you were fluid in your dance flow..Loved it!

I had to admit some of the not-so-househead college kids were bothering me as well. Like JoeB, I had to also tell this GQ model dude and his trophy girlfriend, "look, if you came to have a conversation, take it upstairs to the lounge". I just don't understand why some peope have to after 2 beer and a cocktail need to "dirty dance", which is only one factor in why I love House so much, it's not about partnering.

I did have a short conversation with one head who was visibly frustrated and we did agree on one thing. Club 5 isn't "our" club. The culture there is just what we witnessed - cigs, drinks, and dirty dancin on the floor - and it's alright by them. We were the visitors to another world with an entirely different club culture. I just have to keep that in mind when I visit 5.

Between 2:30 and 3:30 I was GONE!!! Timmy had me open at that point, plus the floor cleared a little so I really enjoy myself. I was wondering what was going, Ayo. You're right; there were people just standing in the wrong places...

I know a number of times it was nice to look over and see a face that understood why I was gently guiding mr. high school jock (circa 12 years ago) through the area my friends and I were DANCING in. I'm all for romance but two drunks clutching each other, splashing others with their drinks, oblivious to everyone and everything but their gooey slobberfest is not romantic. Because a number of the other clubs in the area close at 3, 5 tends to get packed with all their drunks looking for more alcohol. graemlins/cussing.gif

I could only catch about 1 hour of Timmy R's set @ 5 but I probably picked the best hour I could have picked.

I walked in smiling, shook my ass just a little bit, laughed at the unknowings who seemed to loose track of what they were listening to the minute Timmy turned the volume down, almost f*&*ked up some drunkard for being belligerant towards a circle, and then had to leave and get back to work....

He blazed it while I was there.

Does anybody know about the last record Timmy played at Shelter? Actually he closed the night with the end of City Country City, just a little bit of it, but right before it he played a very nice instrumental which had that light calypso beat underneath it all, very subtle, just enough to get your hip shakin'. The record has a very strong guitar in it and a very well placed woodwinds thru it. I got a chance to ask him about it cause it was the end of the party and he told me its something he's workin' on but this ole' fool forgot to ask him the name! Anybody know?

P.S. I walked in just as Sting was getting off, it was pumpin' in there, Sean absolutely ROCKED Antonio's new record, I couldn't even finish drinking my coffee! Made me tremble for the next 2 hours, caffeine and the excitement of a great record being dropped right is too much of a combination for me sometimes..
