THE LEGENDARY MERLIN BOBB
Within the macrocosm of dance music, Merlin Bobb is recognized as being among the DJ’s DJ. However, his creative handicraft on the decks extends beyond the respect and admiration of his DJ peers. His brand of entertainment for the dance music aficionado is legend. This Brooklyn, New York native, raised in midtown Manhattan was weaned on a healthy musical diet of R&B, Jazz, Salsa, Disco and Hip Hop. Growing up as a teenager in Manhattan afforded him the luxury and accessibility to experience some of the hottest venues of the day such as: Studio 54, The Loft, Paradise Garage, Club Zanzibar (NJ) to name a few.

In hindsight, it seems to be of no coincidence, maybe even divine selection that Merlin was surrounded by and grew up with two figures that would have a profound effect on the dance music scene, his cousin DJ Tony Humphries and close friend and next-door neighbor DJ Timmy Regisford. This youthful yet to be powerful triad used to DJ in each other’s apartments. It was at this point that Merlin honed his DJing skills and music business savvy. Tony and Timmy soon became involved in NY radio as weekly mix show DJ’s on two of the rival top stations in the country, WRKS-KISS FM and WBLS-FM respectively.

Timmy believed in Merlin’s skills and would often times ask him to “fill in” for him on his WBLS mix show. It was these “fill-in slots” on WBLS that Merlin quickly began to garner a near mythical status with the dance music public. His distinctive DJing style ushered in a fresh, vibrant flavor full of experimentation and exploration in technique and music programming that set the NY Metropolitan area on its ear. In addition, his precision sliced edits and seamless mixing had every would-be DJ and dance music fan running to record for prosperity this amazing musical presentation.

Merlin landed his first professional DJ gig at the famous Red Parrot venue in NYC, spinning for the highly successful WBLS dance parties. It was apparent that he was on the dawn of having an illustrious career in the music entertainment industry. Merlin, from the onset glowed in the public’s eye with a precocious iconicity. His drive and ambition far exceeded the norm and complacent view of what can be attainable and quickly soared with extreme velocity into the music industry’s inner corporate sanctum.

It was here that Merlin rose to prominence as among the industry’s most influential major label executives. Nonetheless, he continued to be firmly cemented in the world of this new dance form via Chicago called House Music as a DJ in the clubs and on radio. During this period, it was Merlin who was instrumental in exposing the burgeoning House Music scene to the worldwide populace on his Saturday Nite radio show and during his tenure as Vice President of A&R of Atlantic Records. The group, Ten City was the first pure “House Music” collective to receive the “nod” from Merlin and he subsequently signed them to Atlantic. Incidentally, Ten City is among the few and first “true” groups and/or artists in the genre to receive a Gold Album.

Merlin was also very instrumental in initiating a “major label fever” toward the House Music phenomenon as he hired noted remixers and producers in the field. Remixers/Producers such as Roger Sanchez, Kerri Chandler, David Morales, Roland Clark, Jerome Sydenham, Louie Vega, Byron Stingly and Pete Tong to mention a few all benefited from Merlin’s belief and confidence in their talent.

From Atlantic, Merlin went on to become the Senior Vice President & Co-founder of East/West Records to Executive Vice President of Elektra Entertainment Group both subsidiaries of Warner Music Group. He signed and developed multi-million selling music celebrities/entertainers such as Missy Ellliott, Fabolous, Brandy, Keith Sweat, Busta Rhymes, En Vogue and a slew of others. He has also worked with such world renown, multi-platinum selling R&B/Rap/Pop producers: The Neptunes/Pharell, Timberland, Dallas Austin, OutKast, Dr. Dre, P. Diddy and Wyclef are among the star hit makers of today’s popular music scene.

During this time, Merlin and Timmy Regisford founded the 1990’s answer to the spirit of the Paradise Garage, The Loft and Club Zanzibar—Club Shelter. Within one year, Club Shelter was the toast of NYC’s House/Dance music underground scene. Spinning on that “successful first night” was Merlin’s most memorable DJing experience. However, as his responsibilities as a major label executive increased, Merlin took an active role as a silent partner but continued to DJ at the club. Today, The Shelter brand, the music and culture it sustained continue to reverberate around the world.

In the last three years, Merlin has returned to DJing and producing professionally. Not only has he held down a residency at Club Shelter over the years, he has recently traveled throughout Japan, London (UK), Italy, Greece and Paris (FR), gigging feverishly. Stateside, he wowed dance floors in Miami and various parts of NYC. Merlin, along with Timmy, in 2009 once again have founded and partnered another new nighttime House/Dance club haunt to unsuspecting NYC night owls. Area Code at Club Greenhouse in Soho New York is where he holds residency along side Regisford where he injects an upbeat, fresh style of music and mixing with finesse.

Merlin Bobb is among the DJ’s DJ, he brings to the table a history that spawned this generation of House/Dance music enthusiasts, a style of mixing and music programming nurtured by “legends” of DJ entertainment and a legacy that cannot be denied.
