How did you start getting gigs where you are?

this question is for anyone who gets gigs on a consistant basis. How did you break in? was it hard? i just got my first real gig here in philly. i got it through knowing somebody but how did you guys start?

My First gig was at Aqua Lounge on Friday nights, I played there on a Sunday afternoon as a guest one time, and the owner was feelin what I was playin. soooo I sliped him a tape and got his number. A couple months later I gave him a call and told him I liked his spot and that I was tryin to throw a party there. So he was like bring some records on Friday night . I showed up that week and there was like 6 Djs there(remember Philly shuts down at 2am) : mad1.gif ...I got lucky and got to play a good time slot. The crowd was hype and things fell into place. The next week there was 4 djs and the next 3 (Oh yea and uuuhhh I dont think anybody was getting paid) so I just keeped bringing records every week and before long me and the owner set up some bizness stuff and that gig lasted 2 years. I really was not getting paid squat. But It gave me a little bit of exposure and led to other things.
