Kenneth Spank
AKA Marcus Davis
Silver Spring, MD
Dear Deep House Page,
I'm 29 years old and a chemical engineering undergraduate at Howard University. I have been here between 1992-1994, 1998-1999, and 2002- Present.
I'm a year away from graduating, but it looks like I'm going to need your help to meet this goal.
I have a back balance of about $10,000 from last year and I will need to raise addition $10,000 for this year. I have already missed the deadline for registration and payment, but I'm still in classes hoping this situation will turn for the better.
I am on probation. That makes me inelligble for federal aid. Most of my immediate family members and friends aren't credit worth so I don't qualify for outside loans.
Nevertheless, since june 2003, I have been writing letters to people and selling everything i own to try and come up with the money.
I realize times are tough. However, if you are in position to help me with a donation, please do. If instead you might know someone else that is in a better position to help me, please let them know.
Many obstacles have stood in my way over the years that have made my path difficult, but I am persistant and diligent. I am at the cusp of graduation and I plan to see this thing through till the end.
Your donation will help alot.
Thank you
Marcus C. Davis

Perhaps you may want to consider taking time off, working and saving money, then returning to finish school.
Also, maybe there are grants available for people in your position. I am not familiar with the details of such things, but someone at your school may be able to point you in the right direction. I have often been told that there are tons of grants available out there that people just don't know about.
Good luck and stay strong.

Kenspank, pay him no mind. i would suggest throwing a benefit party. if you're in the dc area maybe people like Doug, Moncef, Sam the Man & others can help organize an event for you.
if 1000 people from this board donate 5 bucks, you're halfway there. my payment is on the way. good luck.

Sorry to read about this Ken ... It certainly takes a lot of courage to put this out here ... Sadly, I too am a little ... okay a lot on the credit? what's that? side of things. If there's any other way I could help please say .. I hope things work out for the best ... smile.gif
Oooh ... Cosmic Twin has a good idea ... Not sure how easily that could be pulled off but this is the kind of community action I can support.

Ahem ... Let's keep the focus off Albert and on the issue at hand ... graemlins/cool_shades.gif

Ken,I will send you a lil somethin'.It won't be much, but I will help.If we all can come together on this and help this brother out,I believe this positive energy will come back to ya.

KenSpank,
I feel, ya. I wish I could help you out financially, but I am a student as well.
Consider the positives you wrote. You say that you are "still in classes", despite the $10,000 back tag and probation. Bust those classes out and do what you gotta do. Also, try to get the school to agree to a payment schedule, so you could pay the tuition off little by little. I know it's gonna be a little rough doing that (and getting them to agree to a schedule), but it doesn't hurt to ask and it's a start. The only issue would be that if you are able to finish, the university may hold your degree for back payments.
You are one year left to getting your engineering degree. Are you part time or full? If you are full, have you started sending your resumes to different companies (one year left, now it's about that time)? A far fetched possibility, but who knows? One of them may pay for at least that last year (or more). Dosen't hurt to check on that.
You're in my prayers. Hope this advice helps. Peace.
PS--And please ignore Albert!!!!

Have you tried applying for grants? Check the internet. You would be surprised how many people are just giving away money for educational purposes. I will try to get you some links. Good luck!

kenspank,
I admire your courage and determination. I'm starting an MA which requires my working every spare hour to get the funding and pay my way. Luckily I have a job where I can shift my days around and do that. I like Cosmic's suggestion, is there a paypal account or something we can contribute to?
Good luck graemlins/thumbsup.gif

@Kenspank:
Is there a way that donations could be sent directly the school, say, in the name of a particular scholarship fund or something? Perhaps some folks who are willing to give have employers that might match their donations. I'm checking to see if mine would do that (usually, my company's educational institution matches go to the school's general fund). My company matches 3-to-1 on the first $500 given to schools, and 2-to-1 after that, so this is potentially quite lucrative for you.
Also, are their houses of worship with which you are affiliated? Many have funds for students who just don't have quite enough to pay for everything, even after financial aid, scholarships, etc. Try the fraternal organizations. My organization's scholarship arm may or may not be able to help at this late date, but give it a try: AKA Educational Advancement Foundation site (http://www.akaeaf.org/)
Another possibility: Arnold Grisham, partner, Grisham & Prout (an executive search firm), has started a foundation which helps college students with school expenses not covered by other means. I believe the name is The Last Mile Foundation, but I'm not sure. Mr. Grisham spoke at my company's African American networking group meeting a few months ago, and he was very compelling and seems extremely compassionate. Sorry, I couldn't dig anything up online, but I'll keep looking for contact info.
I don't know if you're working at a gig at which you have a 401(k) plan, but perhaps you can borrow against it? I know this is not ideal, but it's a possibility.
Hope all works out for you...

couple of suggestions, in addition to julian and cosmic's:
withdraw and take some courses for credit at udc
get a full-time job at howard and get the tuition benefit, and a salary
what's up with the probation? gotta fix that
can you work full time in your field and go part-time to raise your grades?
you got to erase the balance, with that they will not allow you to defer payments or make monthly payments

Hey kenspank,
Sorry to hear about this. I remember what it was like trying to get through undergrad and I'm still paying of grad school.
Hate to be like this, but is it possible that we can send funds directly to your school account? Can you provide that info? I'm more than willing to help out with the few extra $$ I have, and that would make me feel much more comfortable doing so.
good luck!

I truly understand where you are at this moment Kenspank. I have literally 4 classes to take for a BA. But, due to a back balance of $2,900 I had to postpone this semester, because the school will hold off on grants until the previous bill is paid. Try the Urban league and other institutions for assistance if possible. To post your situation means you have the desire to overcome all obstacles. You'll make it brother.

I chilled once you, J326, and mhd responded that this thread should be taken more serious rather than it being another goofball attempt to post whore - and I can respect that. Unfortunately, others just had to jump on the bandwagon and get their say too when it was already over, and I'm sure the "lets bash Albert for that horrible comment" nonsense will probably continue for the rest of the day - which is sad to say. I can see it already - 5+ pages deep with nonsense about one post. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

thanks for the replies.
i have been in classes all afternoon, so i haven't had an opportunity to get back to the computer until now.
i would like to thank Albert Diaz for his comment. just the other day i was joking around with friends about stripping for the money. we were brainstorming cheezy stripper names. "Mr. Ding Dong" and "Mr. Ho-Ho" were finalists.
Anyway, I thank Albert for reminding me to keep my head up and remain optimistic.
To everyone else, I would like to thank you for your various forms of support. I hope that together we can turn something that was a struggle for me into something effortless.

there was an article in the post this past weekend on a woman who racked up $10k in debt from shopping. She set up a website for everyone to help her out of debt.
She did it!
but she's still a shopping addict.
didn't cure the disease.
but if she could do it, you can too!

second, one of my passions is environmental concerns. people in my community tend to be the most affected by environmental problems and the least involved in environmental activism. i want to help my community tackle these problems.
third, i want my children to think of me as a person who doesn't give up himself. i want to stay married and i want to be decent example of a human being for my children. i believe that an education can help improve the lifestyle of my family and i believe that together we can be an example for other families and the possibility of having successful black families.
finally, we are spirits living in the earth realm. we all want to grow and be happy. some of us are born into environments that more conducive to growth and happiness than others. that doesn't mean that we all don't deserve to grow and become. i simply am asking for help so i can be in a better position to help others.
