David Morales put his first record on at 2AM and put his last record at almost 7pm last Saturday/Sunday at Stereo for a new record (longest set) by a Stereo resident (Almost 17 hours straight).
I though it was worth the mention. The music/vibe was INCREDIBLE. Lots of Garage classics and deep tracks.
During the evening, David got on the pedestal right under the booth and proceed to reach and touch the disco ball. HE was just feeling the sounds, while he had his eyes closed and just felt the beats coming out of that incerdible sound system! Everybody was dancing around him in a circle during the Cher -Take me home song.He was also coming down on the dancefloor to dance with a few ladies. Magical night.

I got there at 5am, and it was way too intense for me at that time (It was rammed, and people were just going nuts in there). I went to sleep, and went back at around 11AM. He was riding three records at once when I stepped on the dancefloor (His own "Philadelphia" track mixed with "Elle" by Dj gregory over some voodou chant). He followed by Awade (Joe Claussell mix). I just lost it. He played a lot of paradise garage classics like Go Bang, Ain't nothing going on but the rent, Pull up the bumper and la vie en rose by Grace jones,E2 E4 ect. Some tribal tracks with really heavy basslines, some Heavy Dubby tracks, some deep tech. He went on the pedestal to touch the massive disco ball so that he could feel the vibrations from the music and everybody was dancing around him. HE actually came on the dancefloor a few times to bust some moves.
This is a post made by David Morales on the Stereo Board:
WOW!!! I don't know what to say. I knew that the night was going to be great but @#%$ what the @#%$ was that?!
The night started very off for me by that I mean I was stuck at the airport for almost 3 hours, I couldn't eat my dinner because I was so nervous because of the anticipation, we had to work out some final fine tuning with the sound system but by 3:30am we were well on our way. All I can say is that STEREO IS THE BEST CLUB in the world and I can say that case closed! The night was just bliss it was such a journey It was so beautiful in there besides it being packed it was nice to see all the beautiful people smiling and laughing and really enjoying themselves. I want to say a special thanks to the Stereo staff for working so hard (I mean Late) haha!
Also I want to thank the Ness girls for the beautiful decor and performances I love u girls!
I've been at Stereo now for 4 years now and my god I can't believe how it just gets better and better I can't even think about me not coming back there until October what a bummer. I want to thank Shorty for doing a wonderful job with the sound system. Between the 2 of us we will bring you the best sounding room in the world and I will guarantee that! I've always wanted my own club and now I've finally got one. This is my Paradise Garage!
I love to dance it's why I come down periodically on the dance floor unfortunately somebody has to play records.
I wish that I could dance more with all of you. Sorry for some of the inconvenience that alot of you had to go through saturday night but all in all it was worth it 1000 times. I'm now in Florida visiting my son and his 2 pit bulls I will be playing dad for the next couple of days and then I'm off to europe for the next 2 months. To all of you have a great summer and I'll see you in October.
"Will u always remeber, will it last forever, was it what u imagined, or did it feel like magic" words from the song "How would u feel". ONE LOVE always David.

As someone who has followed Morales phenomenal career
since 1986 ,his residency at Stereo hase me partially baffled.
David is a classic New York underground dj icon who had the dubious ohnour of gracing the turntables of the Paradise Garage.Morales was the subject of the classic Village Voice article
on dj culture written by Barry Walters"Last Night A Dj Saved My Life"
We all know his exploits and what he is capable of doing but there are many times I leave there scratching my head.I find he plays too hard for someone of his calibre and his vibe tends to drift to the Ibiza side of things. When I got to Stereo at around 1pm I expected a soulful musical journey with consistency.Instead it was progressive tracks, average voals and overplayed classics like "Love Sensation".Sure he played Club Lonely but then it was countered with just average stuff and before you know it here comes that hammer again!Soulless beats that grate on you.Maybe David plays this way because the substance fueled crowd
expects him to play this way and the fact that he does it so amazingly is why his residnecy is the most sucessful in the city.I don't mind if he is hard for the first 5, 6 hours but there should be a time when the classic house trip should take over.Despite my quibbles with DM @ Stereo he will always be one all time favourite spinners.

P-flipp,
As you know, the Stereo crowd is very, very diverse. You have French speaking people, Anglos, Blacks, Whites, Straights, Gays and everything in between. Morales Stereo sound fits Montreal.Stereo ain't the Paradise Garage, Shelter or Zanzibar. Montreal isn't an extention of New-York/New Jersey. It has its own different sound. The man made 1200 people from different background dance for 17 straight hours on the same dancefloor. It takes a true master to do so. I didn't hear about one single person complaining about the music that night (well, exept you).
You can't diss the man and finish your sentence by saying that he is one of your favorite Dj.
Montreal loves the man and he gives a lot of love back to Montreal in return.

Although I WASNT there I can pretty much confirm that musically it wasnt all that...David Morales of 2003 isnt the same as he used to be...In a 17hrs set he probablly played 15hrs of garbage (IMO)...and that "discoball touching" thing, its the full bag of "pills" he s got next to him (precisely to the left side of the booth next to the third table) that is responsible for it... :D That being said, David IS a legend and I wont say the opposite, but as to lose you head over his stereo residency? cmon...he played a few okay nights back when the club opened and thats about it.....He plays for a young "I just discovered house music during Y2K" at stereo and gives them what they want...I would hardly call that mind-blowing....

Montreal loves the man and he gives a lot of love back to Montreal in return. Uzi i think you're missing the point. YOU started a thread that, for all intents & purposes, reflects a vibe that wasn't there. (i'm not saying there was no vibe, but not one that can be compared to a ny soulful underground exp. re: together in spirit or joe in the park last week)your thoughts would have served a better purpose on, say....tenaglia's board. get my drift?
you mention tracks that comprise 3% of his playlist. it's very misleading. like i said, it should have been posted on a more appropriate message board.
and to say that he made 1200 people dance for 17 hours is absurd. i left at 4:30 and there were 25 people left.
btw i don't think p-flipp is dissing david any more than he is trying to create a balanced thread. after all it's his opinion.
what baffles me is that having a contrary opinion seems like a crime. we can respect other peoples opinions even if we don't agree.

I dunno about you, but the only impression I get is that it was a good ass party and David had a great time...
I didn't pull any comparison to NY/NJ or Shelter or anything of the like out of his text.
I guess this is truly a matter of perception, and what "you" want to take from a particular passage of text.
The end.

Maybe I just don't get it!! graemlins/conf44.gif </font>
i was just about to say something about that thread but held back...its a great example of the 'rules' that we 'deep' and 'soulful' house people have to stick to in order to keep it 'pure'. with regards to morales, since i heard him in the late 80's/early 90's, he has always been an ecclectic dj who plays various sounds depending on where he plays. i've heard him play straight up classic sets, ibiza garbage, deep house, non house and everything in between. once in italy, i played side room in a huge club. after my set i wandered into the main floor area looking for a bathroom. guess who's playing in the outside main room, straight up tribal/progressive...david morales. yet he can go elsewhere and play a 'deep' set and rock it also. i don't understand why the rules have to be that nobody can mention a party on this board if it doesn't compare to a 'new york city deep/soulful house experience' or fit certain characteristics. and why does everything have to be described as 'deeeeep and soulful' anyway? who the f*ck came up with that description? back in the day, there were NO LABELS. in nyc, 'deeeeeep and soulfu' now means the same playlist of records produced by the same 5 people, played by the same 5 dj's to the same 100 or so other dj's and associated 'heads' that all want to buy and play those same exact records. </font>
ok since you did mention it, i'll retort because it seems that all i'm doing is trying to make sense of what people are writing.
NOBODY is disrespecting David Morales. get that idea out of your friggin' minds. jezus christ.
i said that the post was not accurate in describing the night. if someone read that that's into soulful house (sorry chris but don't blame me for all these genres, they actually help somewhat) and visited stereo, they'd be very disappointed. that's all i'm saying. i never said there was anything particularly wrong with the vibe.
and people should really shut the **** up because despite all that's been said by us so called detractors, i for one have missed maybe 5 nights in the 3 years david's been here. if there's any loyal supporters out there, i'm one of them because if i have to sit through hours of ibiza classics every month just to get my little fix, you know i have a deep appreciation for what david brings.
i also drove 400 miles to catch him at shelter. i didn't see any of you there.

Montreal loves the man and he gives a lot of love back to Montreal in return. 1.First up just because my post doesn't fall in line with the overall spirit of the thread this should not be construed as a dis to David.I love the man but I'm not always feeling him @
Stereo simple as that.

One thing might be that people like me & Uzi are coming from a different generation than Cosmic Twin & P-Flipp.
I for one was not really as much of a fan of David's production as I was say people like Kenny Dope or Todd Terry. I got to know his music by hearing him play almost every month for the past 4 years. I learned to really appreciate those night at Stereo, hanging out with friends, lounging and then dancing when the floor cleared out a bit til noon or later.
When you do those longs set on a system like that, in a club like that, with a crowd like that, you have to play like that. David does it really, really well. I can't think of too many DJs I'd want to hear play more than a few hours. As much as I like them, their scope can be limited.
The other night was like a culmination of the past 4 years and I thought he actually played a higher percentage of really, really good stuff than I did in the past. For my perspective it had just enough of that "NY/soulful" vibe with a nice balance of other kinds of tracks, be it techy, tribal, dubby, or whatever.
Maybe P-Flipp & Cosmic Twin have different expectations from having been around longer and experiencing the "NY/soulful" scene in it's heyday.
Also I was there from 5 am til noon, so I caught quite a bit of the night the you guys missed. People like Shorty (the sound guy) and David Wolfe (the light man) who were the there for the whole set both said it was one of the best ever. (BTW Both the sound & the lights were on totaly on point.)
Anyway it's all good, to each his own.

But I can imagine a number of things happening...since it was a long ass set, perhaps this is the part of it that Uzi heard while he was there? Who knows...and I'm not defending Morales either, although I like him overall as a dj, there were quite a few times I wasn't feeling him myself. His NYC radio show is also quite varied in style and genres, sometimes trash, sometimes quality. I also do not doubt your promoting or supporting the scene, your own radio show has been around for years and supports quite a few venues and dj's...hell, I think I even saw you at Sona out of all places once, so there is absolutely no doubt as to what you do or your support. And you're right, I wasn't there for Morales at Shelter, but I have seen him plenty of times in NYC and elsewhere.
What was the basis of my anger is this...people such as Morales and others have been around for years...and play all over the world. So then they play a local venue somewhere, and people expect them to be playing exactly the same way and the same music they were playing when they first started playinng...and I see this all the time with regards to certain big name dj's...such as Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries and others...people have some idea that they still play the same few records from when they first heard them years ago. If you listen and follow any of these dj's, they are doing nothing different form what they were doing years ago. Morales has been playing a long time, and had radio shows, and there was always a constant progression of what he played on the radio and in clubs. Same for Frankie Knuckles. Every time he gets mentioned on this board people think he's gonna play classics all night, but i've heard him in various places and it ranged from classics, to to other places borderline progressive house. Same goes for when he had a radio show in nyc. And the same goes for Tony Humphries...if you listen to any tapes of his radio shows on kiss and hot 97, it was constant new music. at zanzibar, it was a constant slow progression mixed with everyones favorites. so why is it when any of these guys and others play anywhere and certain people come out, they only want to hear what they heard that particular dj play during a certain period of time years ago? that was the basis of me being upset and saying anything in that other thread.

Anyway it's all good, to each his own. i have to agree on the generational gap. i got into house about the same time as you guys, late 80's...and first through the genre of freestyle. for several years i was into the todd terry school of house, which was very percussive and sample filled. i did not go to the paradise garage or grow up on disco. my education into classics came slowly over the years. but what i see now is troubling, there's a lot of people who are quick to school those of us supposedly not properly schooled in music, and there's a lot of people trying to control the history, and a lot of effort to void anything outside a certain narrow definiton of what house is supposed to be or what it is supposed to be played like. Everyone is quick to scream paradise garage ofr whatever club, and school us on how great muscially wonderful and eccelctic it was, but at the same time try to change modern house into a very narrow definiton of of what it is and how its supposed to be played or produced. if you are not playign the same ten records by the sme ten producers in the same maner the top five dj's play those records, you are not considered part of the deep and soulful elite.

Amir </font>
Wow, you don't know me, yet can pass judgement on me? You obviously have a special gift, you can give a review of a night you weren't even at, tell a black man he is fakin the funk and because you know of me, you think you KNOW me?
Your opnion of an event that you didn't attend, is as valid as that of somebody's who was there....????? The logic in that is mind boggling.
Make sure you look me up next time you are in Montreal, I'd looooove to meet you.

It's mad how this post has turned out  . I myself have only seen David Morales play a few times here in London at Ministry in it's better days .
One thing is though and this is my own perspective is if we go back to a certain period of time as for ex say the 80's . Alot of dj's playlists were pretty varied showing their musical tastes . Even Tony Humphries Choice Comp seems really ecclectic , personally I'm hoping to get one for my birthday from my crew ha ha ;) ) .
We have moved on from that period but alot of dj's have fallen straight into a 4/4 frame all night of for a very major part of it .
Those dj's would play alot more varied in some of their earlier parts of their carreer's . Now I am in the shops every week checking a variety of different music inc my main love house , but their is alot of stuff out their to play why are not some of the big spinners playing as diverse as they used to .
I'm sure it was a whole lot more exciting for them when they did ? .
From the old school side of things it seems people like Theo Parrish , Harvey , Francois K are aware of this through their constant intrest in new music and the sounds that come with it . And transfer what they feel they can into the picture alongside the best in house music .
I wonder do you feel you are waiting sometimes for something a little different from the bag , to come and open us up a bit more ? .
Peace Alex . ;)

Javasoul,
You and I know that I don't like you because you went on another message board laughing at the members of this one, calling them wannabe's who are faking the funk among other things. You are a hypocrite. Please don't ever aknowledge me or Natacha in public. You can't go talk shit about the people of this board, and then come post here.
Chris, you are on point.
As I said earlier, Stereo on Morales nights is a very unique place. You won't find anywhere else in the world so many different "type" of people together under one roof (especially in the US of A). You have the white gay men (Junior Vasquez/Victor Calderone type), mixed with the Black/Latino gay men (hip-hop type), mixed with straight blacks and white folks. You also have a lot of ladies.Their age varies from early twenties to the early forties. You also have the tourists who come from al over america. There is no alcool at all. The party this past week-end was just so intense. I go to Stereo to party with some friends from all walk of life. We all are very different from each other in the kind of music we are usually listening to, but David brings us all together for one night. Frankly, I don't go there to get the ultimate musical experience, I go there because it is a good party period. A good party is so much more than just the music. It is about the people you are with, the new friends you meet, the dancing, the laughter. While some people are arguing about what David should or should not play, they are truly missing on a great party. I am just glad and thankful that I was part of this experience. Just to see David enjoying himself so much was worth going.

It is so tempting to reply to this thread but there is so much truth to reveal but it wouldn't do any good graemlins/rofl.gif
I love Montreal, I truly do, but once we get the chance to make things sound better than they are, we sure do, and I'm probably the first one to be guilty of such glorification of something that isn't always there. We have our great nights, we have our bad ones. My word on this: just let it be and let those that enjoyed it enjoy it a little longer. I can say that D.M. never impressed me, but I wasn't there that night.
Please go back to your corners and put the egos aside. ;)

Alex </font>
Alex, there wasn't any glorification. It came from DAVID MORALES own mouth. He said and I quote:
It was a hell of a party/journey

Alex, what is the point of your thread? If you are going to pipe in, why not speak your mind instead of copping out with the "it might reveal too much" bit...
I'm not surprised that you were never impressed by DM, it's not what fits in to your taste (Def Mix at Stereo is not Therapy or Body & Soul ), so why even comment about it?
As for making things seem better than they were, I disagree. Uzi just called it as he saw it and I backed him up on it. It was for many of us simply an amazing night.
What the hell does any of this have to with ego anyway?
Peace

Last time I have posted something here (which were two words: "Thanks Tony") I got a vicious e-mail from you. You later apologize and said that you misread my post.
Last time Natacha posted something here (giving you props for a mix of yours), you gave her and me grief for the same reason.
Now, I am posting something about a good party, and how much David had fun, and you are replying that I am misleading people with my post.
What's up Cosmic?

Amir, I believe what is childish is you giving your opnion on an event that you weren't even at. Not to mention making presumptions about the people in attendance and the supposed substance use of the DJ in question.
I know you and Uzi have some history, but using this as an opportunity to slag him is not very adult-like either.
Maybe the three of us could get together when you are here on the 16th and reminisce about the good ole days of '97, like the Derrick Carter gig at Atomic in Ottawa when you had your "house epiphany."
Ask Rob Brown for my contact info and we'll hook it up.
Peace

SIMON Wow I REALLY didnt want to take this any further graemlins/conf44.gif but you just leave me with no choice...Simon, dude-that-i-dont-know that reads my webpage, WHAT is the problem man? I just reread all the posts and its seems that you went on dissing not one, not two but THREE people now during the same thread, and directly too (Cosmic, myself, and somehow ALEX76 who didnt even say anything??
graemlins/conf44.gif )
Re-Read sir...Re read it all...Uzi posted his comment, and I posted mine. For once Uzi actually wrote something coherant and I just gave my opinion....then somehow you LOST it! graemlins/scared.gif I was at no point attacking anyone but you catz seem to take it that way...there s nothing I can do about that. I even get a "Now its on my friend" email from Uzi? Dudes, you have got to relax. To ME: Its a plain fact that david morales is a borring dj in 2003...simple. AGREE TO DISSAGREE! If i wont express my opinon here then where will I? Why does it even have to be personal? It isnt...and NO I STILL wasnt trying to "get" to uzi either....hey, at least this post of his was a coherent one. They d be many chances to be childish on many many other non-coherent posts of his....But that doesnt interest me..it really doesnt. I was simply expressing an opinon and you turned it into an annoying thread. Oh, and was I dreaming or you really even tryed to turn it into a white-man black-man thing with your "fake the funk" line? graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
Anyways, good luck with your life stranger, and no I wont get your contacts from Rob..dont really need to. But if you really have the urge of meeting up, you know where i d be....

Whatever dude. You weren't there so why bother saying anything? It's like me posting a review of one of your sets I didn't hear....how would you feel about that?
It's fine with me if you don't like David, I'm sure some of your favorite are people I could care less about. (But I'm not going on undergroundhouse.net or whatever and dissing them for no reason) Why on earth would you comment on a particular event that you didn't even attend is beyond me. Just an oportunity for you to bash?
I'm not dissing anyone. Next time I see Tony, Peter or Alex I'm sure we will have a laugh and then find something better to talk about anyway. Seriously, I would like the opportunity to meet you sometime, I'm sure discussing this here any further would be pointless and extremely zzzzzzzz inducing to others (as if it wasn't already...)
Au revoir.....
Simon
You know it bro, next time will be around a beer and laughing about this.
Just one thing though: what I listen to doesn't limit to B&S or Therapy (actually, Therapy is far from my sound although I really enjoy the music that is played there). I can enjoy Danny Tenaglia at Black and Blue, that should be telling ;)
As for the rest, I'll repeat it again, let the people that were there speak their minds. In the end, agree to disagree if you have to. Why does everyone feel the need always have a consensus? Some enjoyed it, some didn't.
