Person A = White
Person B = Black
Equal credit worthiness (which suggests equality on a number of fronts)
Yet Person A gets the loan and person B does not. Many things have changed and many things have not.

The article is a smoke screen.
What business plans were presented?
Were they applying assistance from black owned financial institutions?
Was it same business practices for both applicants?
If you're black and feel like you need financial assistance then maybe you need to look to a black owned financial institution.
If you still get denied then who are you going to blame?

The fact is you're accused of seeking "special treatment" when you point out the socio-economic ruin and breakdown of the family structure bestowed to the African American as a result of the last few hundred years of history, then you suggest that measures be taken to make the playing field even. Hard to yank yourself up by your own bootstraps when your boots have been taken and your feet have been amputated...

That's racism--similar creditworthiness and the black one gets turned down? Unacceptable.
Interestingly, I read somewhere in the past week that blacks are more likely to become entrepreneurs than whites...

I think I know what you're getting at - but you're gonna have to explain what you mean about Business Plans here - otherwise be ready to be flamed on simple comments like that ...
If you're talking about Company B & Company W, same creditworthiness, but other factors (e.g. what is their physical location, product/service, how big is the market for it, what are the market trends, how probable is it that Company B or Company W going to give Bank X "more business" on top of just the simple loan interest) ... then I hear ya !

If you still get denied then who are you going to blame? classic....this kind of response is what we have to deal with even in the face of proof....I guess we should look to the Black institutions, because how dare us with our uppity self go to a white institution, like any other business, looking for a loan...the nerve of us....who do we think we are???
So, what you are saying is because of the blatant injustices at "regular" loan institutions, Black business people(the victim) should do their part to seek out those business where they may stand a better chance.....yeah, I know you are going to say you didn't say that, but it certainly reads that way.....

Yeah it's a reality.
Ever noticed how there are Asian banks that specialize in funding Asian entrep.
Mexicans get together and start a collection of $$$ where everyone puts in $20.00 and takes a turn taking it home.
Race tends to help each other out. It's a comfort zone.
I can waste my energy whining about it or i can move on.
When i get my business started, i might employ minorities only. I'll employ latino's and blacks.
One side is going to say I'm helping the community, others might say I'm racist.
People with intelligence will say I'm handling my business.
There was a statement made in the article that said it all: Blacks and whites had pretty much the same rate of approval regarding credit card applications, yet blacks were turned down twice as much as whites for mortgages and other large purchases despite equal credit worthiness. So where does the racism play a factor?? MEETING FACE TO FACE WITH A DIRECT LENDER. Applying for credit cards is done anonymously. Likewise for auto credit where the dealer uses third party lenders (almost all do except "Buy Here-Pay Here"), but how many people approach their OWN banks for mortgages, re-fi's, home equity loans, etc.??? ALOT. Think about it for a minute. How else would a lender know your racial or ethnic background?? I suppose they could look at a name and speculate, which would be wrong in itself, but I'm guessing that the face-to-face meeting with the bank is the likely culprit, and that's a shame. Opinions??.......JMJ

The case study might draw a conclusion but what criteria was in "sample a" and "sample b?"
It might sound like it's true but I like to know the details of a case study. Sometimes they can be misleading like a poll.

OK Mark now that is in the faces of the masses can I get my Business loan now that I was well worthy of in 1998.
Yeah this same thing happened to me. Check the bullshit:
I have a tight business plan.
$10,000 in the bank and good credit,
My bank denied me and suggested I go to SBA (Small Business Association) Great!
I get there and sit & talk to THE MAN. He reviews my plan a little and goes straight to the projection, fine.
The projection shows that this business will mak money with minimum start up $75,000. He admits it.
Then the guy goes through all this bullshit about how hard it is to get this much money blah blah blah. I say well based on my projections this business is destine to profit in ½ year plus I have good credit and I have 7.5% of what I'm asking for in the bank.
He come up with this BS about my credit isn’t the best and & $10,000 isn't enough to contribute to a business. I said 10gs ant enough to contribute to a business? Huh. I said well how much would be acceptable and he says about $50,000. I said if I had $50,000 I probably wouldn't be here asking you for anything now would I.
At that point I asked to speak to his manager. He asked that I sit in the waiting area for his manager. Cool no big deal.
Mind you before I went into Mr. Jackass's office I met a white woman in the waiting area.
We began to exchange what our purposes were and hers was to open a coffee, book store combo. She told me she was asking for $90,000 and she had no savings so she was hoping that she would get the money. I said have $10,000 myself and I don't need that much money for what I want to do which she thought was an excellent idea.
So, as Mr. Jackass calls her into his office he say his manager will be about 1/2 hour. I said ok cool I'll wait. Who wouldn't wait 1/2hour for $75,000?
20 minutes goes by and the white chick comes out with a big Ronald Mc Donald smile and all I could say was congratulations and good luck.
Now the manager finally comes to talk to me. After all that time waiting for his ass all he has to say is, that he spoke to Mr. Jackass and he doesn't feel its a concrete investment. I said that’s what he told me too. I then suggested that he look at my plan and projections.
He said he doesn't have to look at it because Mr. Jackass told him about them and he relies on him to make the best decisions for this SBA branch.
I said so why did I wait for you all this time? I said you are of no help to my situation. You are not even taking the time to reassure that my plan is worthy.
He says He can't make a decision over Mr. Jackass and I said well who is the manager here you or Mr. Jackass?
He brushed me off with I have a meeting in 2 minutes and he was sorry it didn't work out for me.
I was like ant this a bitch.
I later found the money to start the business with thelp of a blackman.
Yaaayy, yeah right, To only find out that he had underlying intentions which resulted in the failure and my departure of that business.

Yaaayy, yeah right, To only find out that he had underlying intentions which resulted in the failure and my departure of that business.

graemlins/acclaim.gif keith, man, i am sorry to hear that, but unfortunately that is a typical scenario. sad part is that is the kind of thing that can really discourage someone, but its also the kind of thing that can inspire greatness. I hope you kept your dream alive because good ideas have a way of meeting good financing. there are some wise people on this board that may have some insight for you. let me know if i can help in any way </font>[/QUOTE]Its ok I finally got the money but it was just from the wrong person.
I’m hesitant to give my plan to anyone. I have set some guidelines that I now know better to cross.
Yes this type of thing could be discouraging but I believe if there is a will there is a way.
My dream is still alive but just not kicking like Bruce Lee at the moment.
Like they say everything happens for a reason and there is a time for everything.
I appreciate your interest and of course this in nothing to go in detail on a public forum.
If you think back to the summer I think we touch on this in Chicago.
We can discuss this in private so I can clearly see you P.O.V. and you can see mine. Hopefully we’ll accomplish something good!

Well, i was considering buying a piece of property and building a business center on top of it. Leasing out the spaces to small businesses. Land is very cheap here in texas. Land can be bought for a few thousand an acre. What good about Texas is land is cheap and expands outwards. Chicago and other big cites expand upwards. There's alot of space down here.
The building of the center might be expensive but an uncle of mine has a construction business in Dallas. I might have him come here and quote me a price when the land is there.
we'll see.

If you're black and feel like you need financial assistance then maybe you need to look to a black owned financial institution.
If you still get denied then who are you going to blame? I know many black biz owners that got credit and even got credit when they shouldn't have received a darn thing. So it's all about presentation, doing research, being educated, knowing your stuff and who to go to.
Call me crazy, quoting from the bible but faith without works is dead. I've seen people that have faith in their work and determine to get it off the ground (not just christian either), that nothing has stopped them. Yeah you are gonna run into folk that want to discourage you. However, if it is for you to have, your needs will be met. God hasn't created us to live desolate. It's our choices and how we create negative stigmas, even before we walk thru a door of a financial institution.
The civil rights movement has already been won, let's take advantage of it. Get educated, use resources, acquire wisdom and knowledge. That is something that no one can take away from you. Not even that man that everyone thinks that's holding them down. ;)
