Anyone ever had success in throwing an underground classics and houseparty in a smaller less metropolitan area.

I have an audition at this really beautiful, new space (hasn't opened yet) in Hollywood which is about 40 mins north of Miami Beach and 20 minutes for Lauderdale. Never really tried to do this in a smaller city but the owner likes this kind of music.

What are your thoughts or expirences ???

Yes, definitely. One of the best parties I ever did was a regular fortnightly Sunday afternoon in Oxford, which isn't very big. At one point we had regular crowds of about 200 (about, erm, twice the capacity). We handed it over to others who kept it going for another two years, I think. Those were very, very messy afternoons - we had people coming through from London (who I really hope didn't drive back again).

In many ways it's a lot easier to promote in a smaller city. Here in London your target audience is all over the place, making advertising quite hard. Not so in a smaller city: we'd just go out and fly post a few tactically placed subliminal adverts and let word of mouth cover the rest.

It was a pretty mixed crowd, very hedonistic. :D

We had a lot of artists involved in putting on exhibitions, installations etc. It was very open music wise. We did tons of live things, one week one guy came in with a Russian folk band, the next week me and a friend would do four turntables. It was pretty chaotic and full of energy. To be honest, I think that was far more important to its success than the music we played.
