By Nolan Strong
Date: 11/1/2003 11:00 AM

Today (November 1st) marks the start of Hip-Hop History month. The Universal Zulu Nation will pay tribute to the pioneers of the genre during the weekend of November 7th-9th in New York City.

KRS-1's Temple of Hip-Hop will also pay homage tomorrow, by presenting the 1st Annual Temple of Hip-Hop Showcase in Atlanta.

In that event, rappers will compete for the chance to open up for The Blastmaster.

"Hip-hop was created be about peace, love, unity and having fun in order to help people to get away from the negativity that was plaguing our streets," Afrika Bambaataa said. "Even though this negativity still exists, as the culture progresses, we play a big role in conflict resolution and encouraging positivity."

KRS-1, M.C. Shan, Keith Murray, Roxanne Shante, Dana Dane, Joe Ski Love, Newcleus, Kurtis Blow and others will perform at the Zulu event.

In October or 2002, Senator Pedro Espada Jr. of the 32nd Senate District, in the State of New York, recognized November as the official Hip-Hop History month.

This years Zulu celebration is dedicated to Hunter College student Matthew Hall, a Zulu who was gunned down in Harlem in October.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

A Free Trip to The Movies for High School Students!
Sponsored by: Seagram’s Smooth, Jordan Brand, Aaron Davis Hall, North Star, Youth Channel/MNN, Power 105, AIVF, Honey, Savoy, Avid, Bronx Museum, Caribbean Culture Center, Vibe, Odyssey Entertainment, MdxN, Nu America Agency, Atlantic Records, Trace, Scratch Academy, Converse and BET.

NEW YORK CITY (October 1, 2003) -- H2Ed (Hip-Hop Education) and the H2O (Hip-Hop Odyssey) International Film Festival, two initiatives of The National Hip-Hop Association announced yesterday that as part of the Second Annual H2O International Film Festival they have created Old School-New School, a daily three-hour video exhibition of films produced by and for youths to run throughout the festival. Old School-New School, co-presented by MNN Youth Channel will run from November 11-15, 2003. The festival launches in the Bronx at the Bronx Museum of Art on November 11, 2003. The following four days will take place at Aaron Davis Hall, Harlem’s premiere performance center at the City College campus. While the festival is open to the public, from noon to 3:00pm each day the focus is entirely on youth. All High School teachers are encouraged to bring their students to this free event.

MNN Youth Channel has worked closely with H2O to curate films that utilize Hip-Hop to explore issues facing today’s youth. Topics include community activism, teen pregnancy, globalization, sexuality, child abuse and cultural identity. The strong subject matter of these films combined with the use of Hip-Hop culture creates a unique approach to sensitive issues that are not discussed in mainstream media in a way to which the youth can relate. Old School-New School kicks off with First Love and Roaches in the Kitchen, two films by Ghetto Film School, an after-school program in the Bronx.

While the ambiance of attending a film festival is more than enough to excite even the coolest teen, give-a-ways from sponsors like Converse, the athletic footwear company and Vibe magazine, make it a safe bet that most youth will have perfect attendance.

The H2O International Film Festival is committed to promoting and encouraging the use of Hip-Hop culture with media as a tool for social awareness, change, and empowerment by uniting and providing educational opportunities for youth, teachers, filmmakers and activists.

MNN Youth Channel looks at this event as an ideal partnership as both organizations are committed to promoting media as a tool for social change. The synergy lies in H20’s filmmaker forum and MNN’s commitment to give youth from underserved communities a space for media training, production and distribution.

Admission to the Film Festival is free. To register or for more information about Old School - New School call (212) 479-0877 or visit the H2O International Film Festival website at www.h2oiff.org. (http://www.h2oiff.org.)
