After reading the post "Dressing Up To Impress The Opposite Sex", I just happened to find this article on Netscape.com. Please read -

Metrosexual: (noun) Of or pertaining to a straight, urban male who is eager to embrace and even show off his feminine side, especially when it comes to expensive haircuts, designer suits, and $40 face cream.

And thanks to a certain type of male celebrity (read: David Beckham, Justin Timberlake, and Ben Affleck), it's now cool for a man to own 43 pairs of Bruno Magli shoes, wear moisturizer, and paint his nails. At least, that's what The New York Times and a handful of papers around the globe say.

The metrosexual guy is not gay. He's "just gay enough," opines the Dublin Daily. He can take real pride in his appearance. He can go shopping with his gal pals and help them mix and match their outfits and accessories. He can stop at the Clinique counter and purchase products--for himself. But unlike years past, he can do all this and still be considered manly. THAT is what the metrosexual revolution is all about.

Here's another way to look at it: When it comes to good grooming, the straight man is catching up to the gay man. Writes Dublin Daily reporter Frances Winston of metrosexuals, "They've embraced all the stereotypical qualities of homosexuality that make them a more groomed and well-rounded individual without 'changing sides.'"

The ultimate metrosexual is soccer hunk David Beckham. Here's a little known fact about this über-athlete: He paints his nails and wears sarongs. He goes to the hair salon to get perfect highlights. What's more, he doesn't care if you know that.

The Dublin Daily outs these famous metrosexuals and says why:

Justin Timberlake

He's obsessed with good grooming, especially his hair.
He loves his mom and says so.
He showed his sensitive side by admitting that Britney broke his heart.

Ben Affleck

Once committed to a wardrobe of sweatshirts and jeans, he's now one of the best-dressed men in Hollywood. (Thanks to J.Lo.)
He just landed a lucrative contract to promote L'Oreal male grooming products. When L'Oreal announced the deal, the rep said, "Ben embodies a new generation of men who show their strength in their personality, but are not afraid to care for their appearance."

Who is NOT a metrosexual?

Tommy Lee
Liam Gallagher

**Now after reading this, I couldn't help but go back to the quote,
"The metrosexual guy is not gay. He's "just gay enough," opines the Dublin Daily. He can take real pride in his appearance. He can go shopping with his gal pals and help them mix and match their outfits and accessories."

Guys (especially), I would like to read your opinions about this. Have any of you ever heard this term before, is this just another "noun" fad to be used by men so that they aren't categorized
as being gay just because some men choose to have "pride in his appearance"???** Just curious. smile.gif

They used to call them pretty boys back in the day. Pimps have long been known top go get perms and have they're nails polished.

Morris Day came well before cats like Timberlake and Affleck.

Morris Day is a perfect example of a pretty boy or "metrosexual" if you care to embrace that term. I'm not really feeling "metrosexual". It sounds like someone who changes their sexual orientation when they get in the city.

One sign of the metrosexual is that he regularly waxes strategic points on his body, the so-called "back, crack, and sack" treatment.

Metrosexual is just another bullsh*t phrase that the media has come up with to sell print.

I don't know who in the world has come up with the concept that men are just now starting to take care of themselves and caring about clothes. WTF?

Peace

divide the people into nice, neat little categories (and ofcourse have them buy into the notion that yes, they belong in one of those categories) and then sell sell sell to that category.

Imagine the power that some of the mega corporations have at their fingertips all under one roof...publishing divisions that write articles and books about new trends (whether the trend is really new or not..call it "Hype")...marketing divisions that create strategies to sell based on that hype...TV divisions that create programs (with the obligatory commercials) based on that trend..blah blah blah. And all of it is done not really to create value or add to our quality of life. It's done basically to take our money. I digress though. I just am really tired of feeling hundreds of hands digging in my pockets in search of a dollar (though hands digging in my pockets can on occassion be pretty interesting).

I haven't seen the site that JMNYC posted in another thread, but I'm sure it touches on this and more. The site was Merchants of Cool (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/giants/)

had never ever heard about the term metrosexuality before, and now seen the term pop up twice today [both times on music related forums...]
here's (http://www.channel4.com/life/microsites/M/metrosexuality/index.htm) even a lil' test to find out just how metrosexual you are.

Also worth considering, kids are also doing this shit, what silly name shall we give these brats wearing Armani with their spikey gelled hair and their little accesories that people find cutey wootey. The whole world is now cool and trendy and groomed, unlike just the trend setters everyone is ****ing dressed in some corner of fashion, even the spinsters who own 50 cats and smell of piss are probably dressed in GAp with odour la tom cat nowadays (bar a few exceptions)
