Hooj Announcement

Dear Hooj person,

It is with deep regret that we have to inform you that Hooj Choons, as we know it, is no more. Following two years of fairly horrendous financial struggle, during which time we fought to trade our way out of mounting debt problems, we've had to call in the professionals to resolve matters once and for all.

Naturally, this has come about as a direct result of: Sept 11/ any middle eastern conflict you care to name/ downloading/ the slump in the global economy/ music industry/ dance music industry... No, the truth is that as distinguished labels, clubs and magazines shut down around us, we failed to react quickly or effectively enough to what was going on. We thought we'd seen this happen before, and could work our way out of it, but this was a different kind of slump.

It feels like we should write some kind of mini - obituary for Hooj at this point, but maybe everything that needs to be remembered about us is out there already: a hundred and thirty six releases spanning 13 years, all of them, for better or for worse, trying to live up to our original aim of remaining 'occasional providers of half decent house'.

(Key members of staff will be carrying on the work of hooj.com, one of the few beacons of hope amongst the gloom of recent times, under a new name and ownership. Please see separate Hooj.com statement for details at the top of the message board
.
Its been a long, and until recently, enjoyable ride and we thank everyone for their support over the past twelve years.

Yours,

The Hooj Mob

I have never ever been into what they call "progressive house". (Freak'n labels... don't get me started!) However, in lieu of Hooj Choons closing its doors, when I was in DMF yesterday, I picked up every Hooj Choon tune and listen to all of them.

Is there anyone who can give any testimony as to their experience with Hooj Choon records?

they have a sub label called airtight which is a pretty decent house label, hope that doesn't close too...

can't say I own any hooj records apart from a few promo's they sent me earlier this year (which actually aren't prog)

real shame to see them shut down, even if I don't like progressive...

Well, for anyone that likes Hooj Choons... DMF has them going 3 for £20 or 20% off ... some'n like that. It's some crazy sale on Hooj Choons. If that's your bag, then get on it.

From what I understand, Airtight is not closing
(haven't heard anything yet). Sad news indeed.

(And yes, you will get tired of my emoticons, but I've grown quite attached to them)

There's a Charles Webster remix on Airtight that's the boss. Didn't he do a mix CD for Hooj?

Maybe everyone should dig Marmion by Schonenburg out of the carboot sale crates, and play it as a requiem! graemlins/rofl.gif

Do you have a beef with their mail order system as well? If so, I can see your point. However, DMF has some "ill sh*t" in that store. They have stuff that both serious old school heads and new jacks would be cream'n for if they walked into the store. Anyone that's physically been in the store knows that.

Now, I'm not looking for a fiesty retort, so don't get a bee in your bonnet with me... I'm just telling you that in my experiences with the store, I've come out with sheer gold! I'm sorry that you have had a bad experience with DMF... but compared to the absolute f*ck'n down right sheisty records stores in the city centre ( I will not name names!) DMF is "square"!

Again, sorry if you've had a bad experience. Really.

One Love,
Efab
