View Full Version : DHP Chicago events | suggestions
I have received a lot of feedback (mostly positive) regarding the DHP Chicago events but there's always room for improvement.
I have made dj selections based on my best efforts to put together what I believe to be a good balance of new and seasoned talent and styles. no favoritism.
The parties are always planned well in advance. In fact, the lineup for DHP IV is mostly "in the can." I realize that someone will always have a complaint and I'm not trying to please everyone. There is no DHP party committee and there won't be one. Most of the ideas come from me, you and people who approach me.
I want to get your feedback and ideas about these events. Do you want to play? Who would you like to hear? Should the lineup be limited only to djs who are an active part of DHP (not everyone has a computer)? How many Djs should play given the total hours in a night? Let me know.
There are a lot of djs planned for future events. If you haven't heard from me, that doesn't mean I've forgotten about you but a friendly reminder won't hurt either.
You can "come out" in this post or email me:

I'm making no promises.

Hey Torin
I think what you are doing is a wonderful thing man. Don't the negative feedback and the "hate" get you down. I for one think you should be an active participant on the board here to be considered to spin at a DHP event. There is plenty of good "unheard" and "heard" talent on the board here to always have a good pool to pull from. Just my 2 cents!

Get some food. It's nice to break bread so to speak with the DHP fam! Maybe we'll have a special guest cook--lil Ray I'm looking in your direction!

Only thing is people gotta step up and toss in some loot to defray the costs. $3-5 should cover it!

And like some people stated, there has got to be a way for DHP members to be able to identify one another.

There's always going to be disagreements on dj line-ups,remember the first party and the "Usual suspects"??That's why I originally opted not to play, cause I wanted someone else to play for a change.
I say let some cats who have not spun at any dhp events to get some tick first.I am not going to start naming names, but we have Boo Williams here in Chi who has yet to play at any dhp events.I am not sure if he has been asked before. We had Harry A. who even volunteered to fly out to Chicago on his own expense.
There's a lot of cats here in chi with heat and some who deserve some shine.

re: meeting other DHP memebers.
- members already decided that there would be a designated location for DHP members (at Darkroom, its the area next to the dj booth). That way, those who want to meet others can do so. No name tags, etc. I think some DHP (esp., lurkers) may want to remain anonymous.
- there will be a DHP guest list to ensure that Members are able to get into the club.
non-dj input is also welcomed.

My two cents..pass out flyers. Promote at more than the USUAL parties where you see the USUAL people. Think outside of the box. There are so many heads that can be turned on to House as well as DHP. Not everyone has a computer. Posting something on DHP is cool but it doesn't give more people the opportunity to hear about these parties(I wanna see more than just industry at a party). The parties have been good though.

I'm kinda late to the topic, but how about:
getting a 'team' together for promotion. A lot of cats will do the word-of-mouth thang but don't like to work flyers. A good way to do it would be to divide the city into Northside, Southside, and Westside. A lot of Heads that still go out aren't DHP members, but they'd still like to know about stuff around town. I go out all the time (mostly North and West, though) and if this idea comes to fruition, I volunteer to be on the team if need be.

B'intoxicated and tell everyone that you:
A) will NEVER EVER post on the DHP again. Then wait two days and come back. This works for some cats here
OR,
B) pick someone on the board and make them your enemy and have long drawn out internet wars that will have you both banned repeatedly.
These are sure fire waysto B'noticed...but you won't B'liked... graemlins/cool_shades.gif

Also, what about promoting on city-alert.com and socialsteppers.com? Places and sites that don't nec. cater to a house crowd still get plenty of visits from "heads," and those who just want to party, regardless of the type of music played.
One more thing: if parking might be an issue (Chicago Ave. can be kinda funny that time of night), is there any way to work something out with a lot owner in the general area, and/or the owner for a valet service? The last weekend in January in Chicago is not known for balmy temps, so if folks can't find nearby parking, they may leave the spot with a sour taste in their mouths, or, come in with an attitude.

That's a bad idea. Not to nitpick, but you KNOW how NON-House heads get when they go o a party that only plays House. And there's nothing worse than some jackass haraasing the DJ all night to play stupid shit. and that's what would happen...

- i've also learned that no one really wants to pass out flyers. i mean, a few people will do it but its not desireable. they can be expensive and the returns are not proven (larger, more diverse attendance). i'll reconsider flyers for the next event.

Man just hook up my boy's, cousins boy. I heard he spin also. Forget about the line up for the next 2 or 3 events. Why isn't so and so on, he's been spining before some of them other cats. Oh by the way, don't make them have to call you first, you should just know that they want to be down!
Seriously, I don't envy your position. People quick to complain but not give credit. You are doing a great job with all of this and the events are improving as you do more. Unfortunately, everyone can't play at the same party at the same time. For some, there will be the next 1 and that's a good thing...

Who is complaining about the damn dj line up??? If you aren't happy with the dj line up then throw your own party! To complain about "why my boy ain't djing" is ridiculious. One thing I've notice, no matter what happens, not everyone is gonna be happy with the "dj" line up. But this is a petty form of hating... Just make a suggestion for future events and leave it at that.

And on the subject of passing out flyers...
Anyone here that is against passing out flyers is either making a mistake in judgement or just to damn lazy to get out there and do it.
If no one else will, I'll pass out flyers. word of mouth is good, the internet is cool, but what about turning on new people that don't know about the music? The main way they find out is by pluggers.
Sure, (nothing against them-these are all my friends) if you only want DHP heads, Don, Ruth, Erika, and everyone from Why Knot, Zulu, Monie and maybe Khari B and his crew to come out. But don't we want to try and expand this thing we call house?
We really have to get past throwing parties for the same 50 people... graemlins/cool_shades.gif
