View Full Version : Effects...how much is too much?

Or too little in a mix? I've been criticized for having too much filtering effects as well as for not using any effects at all.

I'm curious to hear your opinions on this regarding CDs and in a club atmosphere.

Effects are there to enhance (not overwhelm) the music. If someone's bitching about not enough effects they probably have ADD. You have to let the record breathe!

it's all prefrence i guess. personally, i don't like the dj trying to add too much because i feel that it takes away from the producer's idea.

If you are running a REAL journey type thing,
by all means "FVCK THAT SHIT UUUP"

vs.

If you are just playing to be be playing to be playing,
don't "FVCK THAT SHIT UP, please"

YOU will know when enough is enough by your own reaction if you are TRUE to the OUTPUT from the SPEAKERS and your SOUL.

play it proud.

When your ears bleed, that's usually a good indication that you're using too much. http://deephousepage.com/smilies/smokin.gif

If you "NEED" the EFX to make you "SOUND" better, Maybe you should try not using them for awhile. I really never have used them.

very interesting replies to this one.

MASTER IT before you make a fool of yourself because basically - it's not adding to the music - it's taking away from it.

WHo have you heard that MASTERS the crossover/FX:

I'll start:
#1 - JOE CLAUSELL
#2 - TIMMY REGISFORD
#3 - LOUIE VEGA
#4 - THEO PARRISH
#5 - KIM LIGHTFOOT

respect the music!

It is about preferance,
I personally like hearing what a DJ can DO to a record.
I prefer doing something to a song or a record myself.
It's fun,

graemlins/rofl.gif Yes, I know what you mean - but they got it down when it REALLY works.
Timmy has a signature on it
and JC DEFINETLY KILLS that shit like no other...

It's all about the music man.

Otherwise, it's about the DJ Skills

and when you got 100,000 mofos going crazy to that EFX-500 modulated, dubbed out, swirled around, delayed up vocal swirl or piano rush, i.e. GLORIA's MUSE getting the TIMMY TREATMENT or CASA FORTE getting tortured by JOE CLAUSELL
you can't help but feel that shit move you.

vs.

KID that's on the box, really trying hard to even get people to dance, messing with the EQ ALREADY before the party even got a chance to blow. Then - later on, proceeds to absolutely annoy everybody with the BASS DROPOUTS, the EAR SPLITTING MID BLASTS and the sizzle of the HIGHS... "dayum... somebody go tell that HIP HOP DJ to get his ass in here." icon_rofl.gif

see.

respect the music! I love Joe's productions but he made my ears bleed when he played at DEEP-LA. Take that EQ away from him! graemlins/cussing.gif It's a total buzz kill.

Also may I add that I put a lot of the blame on the mixers. They put all that stuff on the units. The Pioneers' 500,600,3000 ect... . I don't use those mixers because I don't like the sound (I'm a Rane/Bozak/Urei, or any other good knob mixer myself). Plus with all those gadgets, you're gonna lose something somewhere. I Remember when we just had the old Teledyne Mixer

After clubbing for years, didn't have my best night out until November of last year when Larry Heard came to Sheffield UK to play. Jeeesus that man ripped up the FX box (along with Brett Dancer)It was one night when unusually I didn't drink (well had 1 or 2) so I can remember nearly everything. Larry was filtering some 12"s from start to finnish, his hands were working over time, to me personally it worked amazingly, so depending on who is in control and which tunes are been played u can never have too muchor too little it all depends on the techniques of the technician/atomosphhere/mixer/crowd/club etc

I don't know...sometimes it does get in the way..I'm still learning myself....I really like the way Frankie use to give the floor that warm rush of bass at just the right time in a particular song...people would just be smiling feeling it..not every soNg needs to be tampered with..JMO!!

I use it for drama.I also use it to freak the hell outta something.I like the sounds of it.I always have loved using reverbs and echo boxes.

Everyone has their own flavor and style. Why is that a crime nowadays?

I agree, Francois is awesome with the x-over and efx.

How do you tell if it's too much? When you notice the efx more than the music.

Ask a woman about this, they won't bullshit you...I've seen my girl stop dancing to her favorite song because as she puts it, the DJ is "masturbating."

Being creative is not a crime,
unfortunately some people just feel that way.
