View Full Version : technical question regarding installation of Real Player on Windows 2000 system
hello,
i need some urgent help. The people from the IT departement here , have installed Windows 2000 on my pc..The only directory we can save applications in is the C:\my documents directory..I already downloaded Real Player to start listening to DHP mixes.. Yet, when I was ready to instal Real Player, I got a message that I had no authority to do so..I hope everyone understands clearly that i NEED this installed on my pc..I can't work without music..Only as a last ressort, i'm willing to beg with the IT departement (i reckon they will not allow it anyway)...So, who is smart enough here to explain to me how I can do this myself ? I know it is possible.. There's a guy a bit further down in the corridor who has installed Win Amp ..Asked how he did it, he refused to tell me (he fears the risks of having too many people installed this)..
i appreciate your help,

The systems administrator may have setup access priveliges to each end user's User Name controlling each work station and preventing people from installing software without the administrator's permission.
You may need to do some Registry work, if you can access Regedit.
Peace
io Lyot,
you will need the administrator if you can do it yourself.
And if you wanna install it yourself you will have to hack your pc with boot disk of windows 2000. The second thing you need to know if you use fat32 or NTFS. You have to copy a file with administrator password and then put it back after you installed real player. Not very easy to do.

It sounds like the place you work is very tight with desktop policies and probably network security. I wouldn't doubt if they also track where employees go and what they download. I've done work at law firms for instance that could track down-to-the-user what sites they visited (and wow...these folks were going to some NASTY sites!). Your effort to circumvent things might just end up being more problematic. Maybe you should somehow find out what exactly your IT department is checking out behind the scenes. Got any friends in IT? :D
I will try to find a tutorial about it...

Sorry to tell you but you have been locked down, the only thing you can do is ask the sys admin if they will install the real player for you. A lot of companies are limiting what employees can do on work pc's to try to protect themselves from lawsuits due to all the file sharing out there. Also becareful what websites you go to, they can get terminated

yow folks,
thanks for the advice on this..The situation is apparently more serious than I'd expected..damnit..
i think i'm gonna write an email to the IT departement, explaing that I can't work without music , which is in fact true..There's too much noise around here, and i'm used to working with headphones..I don't need to download anything neither, nor I do take up bandwith (i did in the past, so now I've got about 100 tapes on my harddisk...that's enough to keep me quiet..)
I'm 100% that they do not control what websites we visit, since i'm surfing and posting on the DHP all the time..Never got any remark..
maybe the best thing would be to look for another job.. graemlins/all_coholic.gif

Try listening to the mixes with Ra2wav. I believe that is just an executable and does not need to be installed smile.gif .
