I was wondering if any dj's on this here board play any jazz/fusion records in their sets . I noticed Mr Regisford played Bobby Hutcherson - NTU at Shelter , also I heard him play John Coltrane - My Favourite Things on a set from DHP . Francois killed me at Plastic's with Pat Metheny - Are You going with me etc . I really enjoy hearing some jazz/fusion when I'm out partying . I like to play a few myself if the time is right , there's alot of freedom to move and dance in those records alot of dancers seem to be able to let loose even more on ocasions .
love to hear if anyone still likes to play jazz/fusion ? .

Peace Alex .

I play it more if I'm DJing in a bar. A lot of jazz fusion is good listening music but less good for dancing. Pat Metheny of course...as well as Are You Going With Me check out Sueno Con Mexico and As Witchita Falls...

Greetings Alex smile.gif

IMHO: ......tis' the roots to a lot of good music.

What I love about jazz, (traditional especially) is it unpredictability and its musicianship qualities and often the use of real instruments.

Have a great day!

Play lots of textures, sounds and vibes and watch the booties shake.

Sure some is good for dancing, but a lot isn't. I don't play house music at all so I'm with you on the 4/4 thing.

peace to everyone

Always coming with the right questions bro!

Fusion wise: Azymuth - So much of their stuff is great dancefloor material, and useful for warmups..

Donald Byrd, Pleasure(Joyous/Bouncy lady/Let me be the one/Take a chance etc), Herbie,Airto, Miroslav Vitous, All the CTI crew....could go on forever!!

As for modern jazz - I'd love to hear more on decent club systems but do djs take the risks?

Heard carl craig drop Max Roach 'Abstusions' (you know man!) in a club, but it goes over most peoples heads. Its a real shame that people don't open their heads to all styles of music in a nite, as long as its got soul (sound like a familiar discussion!?)

Peace, J smokin.gif

1. Azymuth's "Jazz Carnival"
2. Donald Byrd's "Change (Makes You Wanna Hustle)"
3. " " "Think Twice"
4. Jimmy Smith's "Can't Hide Love"
5. Herbie Hancok's "Stars in Your Eyes"
6. Eddie Henderson's "Funk Surgeon"
7. Return to Forever's "Armando's Rhumba" and the second song off the Romantic Warrior album.
8. Stanley Clarke's "School Days" album
9. Jaco Pastorius' "Come On Over"
10. Miroslav Vitous' "New York City" produced by Herbie Hancock
11. Johnny Hammond's "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", "Fantasy", Yesterday was Cool", "Gambler's Life"

And I'm just scratching the surface. ;)

Pharoah Sanders- You've got to have freedom Hello Natacha,

That from recognising alot of those cuts would be a real nice tape . That Dave Samuels record is really beautiful , I would love to see dancers going off to that as well .
Have you heard the live 20 something minute version of Pharoah Sanders - You got to have freedom ? . I had the pleasure of listening to that at a regular sunday afternoon jazz fusion dance session in Camden north London , unbelivable even has Pharoah singing on it introducing all the members playing and they go off themselves ! .

Are you a professional dancer yourself ? .

Peace Alex ;)

Natacha,
I know a dance teacher who happily accepts teaching tapes :D .

You guys have listed many of my favorites. I do have a couple of requests though. I always have a really nice time dancing to Dizzy Gillespie's "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac" and Coltrane's "Ole" with my students. It would do my little heart good to one day be so blessed as to hear them loud and large at a happening party. Boy, oh boy would that be grand.

Good topic. Jazz fusion/jazz dance/jazz funk etc. should be played in any good dance set. After all what do we think Lonnie Liston Smith`s "Expansions" was? Jazz-fusion. I`ve always admired "Westchester Lady" by Bob James. I liked the way Ashley Beedle redid Wood, Brass and Still`s "Funkanova"-"New Jersey Deep". That record should have gotten more airplay on black stations. Just a thought

Is there anybody here a serious Azymuth fan? I`m interested in dissecting their discography.
I dig Carl Craig`s experments with jazz fusion. Many of the techno peeps can`t understand relationship between genres. Viva jazz/techno.

I got tired of the 4X4 all night long, I wanna hear all kinds of rhythms, from house to broken beat to hip hop to jazz, funk, african rhythms, techno.... everything.

re: "Are you going with me", really dig that track, the original. When I heard Kerri's interpretation, I didn't dig it as much as the original.

You don't necessarly need beats to dance. ;)

Although I'm not too fond of fusion, I will always love jazz in all it's forms. I love Swing, Cool Jazz, Bebop, Dixieland, Ragtime, Smooth Jazz, Latin Jazz, Bossa Nova, and so on and so on. Jazz is a major influence in my taste of music, and it will always get play by me no matter what people think. Jazz is the player's music and it is the sophisticated person's music. smokin.gif

A house with just house isn't a home; therefore, all music that has contributed to house music IS house in itself, and in the end, it makes a home.

Weather Report are first to mind on this topic. I'll drop a cut like 'River People' from the Mr. Gone LP, 'Elegant People' from Black Market (I think that's the one - there's definetly one on the LP that does it dance-wise); 'Mr. Gone' the title cut - I don't play all of the song but the start & the synth groove play well slow into a techno thing or Drexciya, who were like a later incarnation of Weather Report for me *...

Funkanova I was gonna say that but (Alex) you know that's a favourite for me smile.gif

there's a Santana joint called Aspirations which I'd love to dance to.

Crusaders/Felder - My Lady: I like to play it at 45 in the minus range

Pat Metheny ('Jaco') / Bob James ('Spunky') / Herbie Hancock ('The Spook Who Sat by the Door')

* the more 'experimental/innovative' fusion artists sound to me like the precursors of the Detroit techno / broken / nujazz isht some of which is worthy of that lineage graemlins/grinyes.gif

i also recall a record that sampled wheather report's 'will', anyone know what track it was? stayed quite true to the original [well, that's what my memory recalls.]

billy cobham and george duke are two artists that got massive play by some detroit dj's.

Peace Alex . harking back to the earlier days, jazz funk jeans with the white piping down the leg, Light of the World , Incognito, Paul Hardcastle, Dave Valentin, Wilfred Longmire, Charles Earland, Roy Ayres. It's all about the jazz and the funk. I attended a night recently where the dance floor was alight with footwork, good to see this is still alive, challenges like I remember back in the 80's, geezer using his hat as a prop, kicking it in the air and catching it on his head, refreshing to see this after such a time

to me this is what it's about - dancing ! rather than the default club side shuffle we see so much of nowadays.

another great herbie hancock track to drop in a set is 'nobu' from herbie's 'dedication' lp. mixes great with model 500 'pick up the flow'.

This is the electronic track he did that sounds like contemporary Detroit techno right ? .
That is an unbelivable track and so progressive .

I dig Carl Craig`s experments with jazz fusion. Many of the techno peeps can`t understand relationship between genres. Viva jazz/techno. haven't heard the entire album yet, but i guess the detroit experiment will fit in nicely in this thread. carl craig's and karriem riggins' vision on detroit's jazz history. reworking marcus belgrave's 'space oddyssey' amongst others.

to me this is what it's about - dancing ! rather than the default club side shuffle we see so much of nowadays. Hello Martin,

Man that shit still goes on in Camden two sundays a month at the Shiftless Shuffle sessions . Quite a few new and old dancers go down there and it goes off on nearly every occasion .

Peace Alex . ;) [/QB]
It should be good this Sunday, my good friend Adrian Leach is the guest & I don't know many people that can touch him for jazz, latin, swing, afro cuban etc.
Come down if you fancy getting amongst with some old faces (IDJ, jazzcotech etc) & see me making a fool of myself on the dancefloor.

A lot of jazz fusion is good listening music but less good for dancing. Pshaw! It is often GREAT music for dancing. I think a lot of DJs have the impression that if a record doesn't fit squarely into the 4x4 mold it isn't a good dance record. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Play lots of textures, sounds and vibes and watch the booties shake. </font>
That's right! I was on Jamaica Ave today for their street fair and heard Salsa great Larry Harlow and his band, an Afrobeat band named Akoyo and a jazz quartet after Larry Harlow played. All those could be mixed with House (as Afrobeat is)and keep you dancing. Too bad I was the only brother I saw that could Latin. People moved but didn't know clave. The relationship between them has been crystal clear to me. Hopefully today someone also learned that from what they heard.

Sh*t on the KUDU label was dope (Idris Muhammad, Grover Washington Jr., Johnny Hammond, etc.).

I also like sh*t on the Fantasy label especially Funk Inc. ("Bowlegs")

Did anybody mention Roy Ayers yet?

Hi chgodj3, from what I know.. the original version came out on Herbie's (very vocoderish) 1977 release - Sunlight.

The extended versions (more popular amongst the heads)on the Japanese released Directstep LP.

But strangely enough, I find myself chucking the Kimiko Kasai version more into my cd player. Released in 1979 and very tastefully done graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Here's the link to the album : http://www2c.airnet.ne.jp/stevie/KIMIKO%20KASAI/KIMIKO%20KASAI.html

Jazz music is so IMPORTANT to a dj's record collection. I think a lot of times we as househeads, get so used to 4 to the floor, that we forget about the music that came before house.
Mad respect, to all dj's who play this music in there set's.

A good jazz record to have for house music sets
is Atlantic Forest, the first solo album by Azymuth bassist Alex Malheros. The cut to play on that album is entitled Papai. Has anyone heard
of this wonderful album?
