View Full Version : What artist has let you down musically recently?

You know how you are a fan of someone's work and they just bug the hell out and get on some special shit?
One artist I will have to list is Sade.I her her dirty drawers, but the Lovers Rock cd just did not get me in the balls like some of her earlier stuff. Not saying the cd is wack, but it just did not move me.I guess it could have come from high expectations and overkill from bootleg mixes.
I did have a few cuts I liked.I really liked Someone already broke my heart.I guess I will give it a spin tonite and see if my feelings will change.

Smashing Pumpkins because they broke up their music was excellent.
I was pretty disappointed by the new Gang Starr album...

Maxwell's newest one was not up to par with his older stuff.

I was dissappointed with Jay'z and Nas' last projects. Jamiroquai's last effort left something to be desired too.

It wasn't very recent, but I'd have to say Quincy Jones.
First, I idolized Quincy. The Dude, Body Heat Sounds, Brothers Johnson's "Look Out for #1", Chaka and Rufus' "MasterJam" Benson's "Give Me the Night", not to mention two sparcely circulated albums called "Off the Wall" and Thriller". One of the most inventive and insightful producers in the history of all musical genres.
Then "Back on the Block" and "Q's Juke joint"; two of the most vapid and sonically offensive recordings I've ever had the displeasure of hearing. My heart was broken. My idol was now a crapmonger. How could this have happened?
Why, Quincy? Why?

Stevie Wonder's stuff since the 90's Part Time Lover, These Three Words, etc just does not move me the way his earlier stuff has.

I can't say I've been let down, because it takes courage to release ANYTHING and I love anything done courageously.
That said, some things I haven't been able to understand lately.
PRINCE - what's with the JW thing, and why has it colored your music so?
KRS-One - Shit man, I learned from YOU how Christianity was one of the chains of slavery. That about face is a bit weird.
U2 - Although I dig the techno bits, never thought I'd be hearing pop music from you guys.
VAN MORRISON - are you, like, the Stanley Kubrick of Rock and Roll?

As politically incorrect/disrespectful as it might sound...Luther Vandross.
Somewhere along the way, Luther's music lost me. It's like the bassline...the groove...something...was removed from his most recent works. I was listening to stuff like It's Over Now, That Night I Fell in Love, etc. the other night and it really struck me how much the composition of his music changed. That thumpin, often sensual bassline is gone.

"Can I take you out tonight" I enjoyed, other than that I don't feel alot of his music.

Just one big side note mention
STING.
The Police have to be one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and yet again, he had Marcus Miller on his first solo album, which that 'if you love someone set them free' joint, his second one with Englishman in New York wasnt bad...after that it was ****ing VH1 Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz city.
To go from The Police to where he's at now....he should have croked after that second solo album.

if an artist no longer fits your "criteria" then just pick up another artist that fits that criteria, but artists should be allowed to change along with the layers of skin on their body.

Why, Quincy? Why? Hi Uplift, yeah.. the album's not that great but don't tell me you don't feel them slow numbers like The Secret Garden and Septembro.. those tracks move me till today. His rendition of Birdland grew on me after a while as well.
Quincy is still the man!

Snoop Dogg for me. I loved his first album and Doggfather wasn't too shabby, after that it all went downhill.. just heard "Paid The Cost To Be The Boss" >> putrid graemlins/puke.gif
Another producer for me that's been of some disappointment of late is Lil' Louie Vega. Loved the stuff he put out in the early to mid nineties.. that Misery track with Kimara Lovelace was nice as well.. but me thinks he's getting way too carried away with that "afro cuban / afro soul" kinda sound (watever you wanna call it). What ever it is, he sould have given it a rest after Elements Of Life. Cerca De Mi didn't impress me none, neither did any of the Vega Records releases. Apart from him - Blaze used to come up with beautiful stuff.. especially cuts from that Pure Blaze LP graemlins/1luvu.gif The new shit is urrr so so.. not great.. just so so. Still decent compared to Joe Clausell.. the only track that I dug was his remix of Camacho's Renegade.. the rest of his stuff >> Spiritual Vomit graemlins/puke.gif
Don't mean to sound too harsh with my observations. This is what I feel so I'm just speaking my mind. I know a lot of you will tend to disagree. Well, to each his own I guess smile.gif

Romanthony for sure. back in the early/mid 90s, he was wrecking shop all around and having a unique aesthetic to his music...but then he did a 360 and next thing you know, he's collaborating with Daft Punk....i know artists got to eat and i certainly don't blame him for taking the chance on making a better living through pop-styled music, but his recent stuff is yuk! graemlins/puke.gif
