Also Hutch, Mark IV, and Stephon Johnson had memorable parties there. Gotta throw Dock's in as a historical spot as well as Ebony Manor and Irvington Manor. Sensations was originally called New Experience and I can remember going to a club in E.O. called Doops.

Hold Up! How could I forget: Orange Park circa 1979-81, back when you could cruise thru and see all the fine ass peoples. In the late 80's we used to hang out on Sunday afternoons and hang out with half the Zanz heads you were in the club with a few hours earlier, there was always house pumpin out cars and folks dancing all around.

Black Box was much easier to get going. Great sound system for the space. 4 Berthas with columns and 2 hanging tweeter arrays. Lots of sound for the space

That room would LITERALLY rock! I remember going to a ball there towards the end of its hay day and the system was pumping so loud you couldn't hear the MC - nobody knew when it was their catagory! The ball children battling it out chanting ...
"Ovahness!"
"LaBeija!"
"Ovahness!"

another thing about Jersey - CHEAP DRINKS! I couldn't get out of Murphy's sober if I tried and then along comes Byrd and ... well I can't exactly remember what would happen next, but I'm sure it was fun graemlins/rofl.gif

Anyone remember the name of the club across the st. from Zanzibar (Next to Adams or maybe same space before it became Adams). My friend Eddie use to run it with his partner I forget his name. Right across the Street on Broad. Correction one block left of Zanz.

Actually I had been talking to someone about a book. I'n not sure it's worth it yet. I want the history of Jersey clubs and Dj's from a Jersey perspective. If I get interest maybe I'll do it. There alot of history that alot of these books miss.

No there was another club there before that. I guest DJed for Eddie a couple of times. Way before Mirage

Hippie don't wait too long for the book, you have the knowledge and the resources now! The club on Branford, possibly Shaniques? Oh but wouldn't it be nice to resurrect 280 with the extra space...Talk about a "big room."
Hippie
07-10-2003, 08:49 PM
No Shaniques was on Halsey

07-10-2003, 08:53 PM
Yeah 280 would probably be a good space to do but you need alot of cooperation from the whole House scene. That room is extremely big.

280 needs a wooden floor. We put down a new cement floor because we didn't have the money for a wooden floor. But thats a bit hard on a dancers feet.

I think I saw this same post a while ago on another board ;) . I'll take it back to the early 80's we used to kick off The Pub at Livingston College. Did a few joints at the Ralley Raquetball Club in E.O... Hippie do you remember Quincy, Wayne Simms, The twins Quadri and Quadrule (?). One of them ended up being the manager for Boys II Men. They used to be up in El Castille. What about Raymond Kelly (DJ Keys). Doops, Tweeds (Sunday night spot in Irvington).

damn, 10,000 square feet! Phuck a club, we need to make that $hit a commune and all the househeadz get like 500 sq ft each. Then in the center we have a dance space, and pay the mortgage each month by having a party.
Who's down?
Wait a minute, I forgot some Newark children's feet be stinkin'.... lemme think on this a minute...

Oh God I missed a whole host of them Black Box resident dj Friday night (1994-1998). Just ran into Chuck and George Lawton they're doing well. Naeem is back, nuff said. Stephon used to have it wall-to-wall packed in there on Sat. With the dancers I gotta mention my girl Ovina and her crew along with my man Pete Springer they were hardcore regulars. The Box featured up-and-coming as well as established artists like Barbara Tucker, Darryl D'Bonneau and Sajada. Guest djs included Louie Vega, Kenny Carpenter and John Robinson.
Did my first professional dj work at Hardcore (Club 280) in 1989 with Nick Jones. Disciple had a nice party there when it was Club 280 that was tight.
Gotta throw in Underground Dreams/Movement run by Tamir in the mid/late 90's were I played along with a ridiculous roster of djs like Dave Tobon, Pookie and Mr. X. Oh and how can I forget Mr. Hippie! Deep Vibe and great atmosphere always. Thanks for the contribution Tamir.

Man I like this thread. Brings me back to wintertime after New Experience and everybody used to pile in the Donut shop and wait for the Broad and Market buses (27, 39-48, 24, 31, 25) to go home or just walk. Anyone remember that kid Malcolm who used to do the KarateRobot with those white gloves and light-up glasses? Cats used to sport Karate suits and shoes, wear spikes, studs and cut-up jeans and tees to the club. Where is Camacho? I used to slide over to Scudder homes on the regular. Used to roll with Mark IV to the parks and projects man those were the days. Any djs mention Stephen's record shop next to the Donut Shop? I wore everything from drawstring pants to Kangos to Easy Walkers with the Ripple sole ok I'll stop there.

Say Hippie, I remember a spot across the street from Zanzibar(A little down the block)in the early to mid 80's, That cats used to Wear suits and ties to get into(I can't remember the name of the spot though), Also does anyone remember Merlin Bobb sometimes sitting on a stool checking Id's and if i remember correctly collecting the ticket that you would get at the window once you paid that 12 dollars, Also, Does anyone remember the Zanzibar hotline were a cat/Young Lady would give you an update on the coming week as far as shows and Dj's for Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nites, The hotline would also give you directions to get to Zanzibar, But if you were coming from New York(Like myself and my boys)
The Hotline would mention to take Route 1/9 all the way to Newark(That shit was crazy wack with all of those lights on Route 1/9/It took me two years of traveling on route 1/9 before i got the courage to try Route 280 one morning), Also, I once had a flyer from Zanzibar from 1982 that had the Dj lineup for a Saturday nite throwdown(Party), And the flyer had Tee Scott,Larry Patterson,Tony Humphries,Gerald T(Gerald T.Roney), If i can ever find that flyer i would most definitely pass it on to Gman, Say Hippie, Do you remember a cat named Lamont Boles who used to MC some of the shows at Zanzibar in the early to mid 80's(Short Lightskinned cat), I can't forget one of the best Basketball Tournaments in New Jersey back in the 90's and that was The Harry James Pro-am Tournament in East Orange on Central Ave, Across the street from a school, But i cannot remember the name right now, I don't know the name of the cat who was on the mic souping(Giving you play by play coverage)up the games and cracking on cats/Young ladies as you came into the park, But Homes was crazy funny, And my man would play tapes with Club music that would make cats/young ladies want to get busy(Start a party)right in the park(**** the games), And, There were more than enough Young Ladies in the park checking out the games, Where a throwdown(Party)could have worked very well, I've always had alot of fun in New Jersey.
Later
Mike Barnes
P.S. Anyone remember the cat who used to sell the franks and soda's on Broadst right after you would come out of Zanzibar in the morning in the Early to mid 80's.
