1. How old is this track? I have it on bootleg so there is no such information.

2. Is the body of the song a sample, and if so, what track?

Your asisstance would be greatly appreciated.

You can peep it here http://expansionteam.org/clients/julian_mahogany/Mahogany.mp3
It is the first song on my latest mix. The break I'm talking about doesn't really kick in for a few minutes when the song gets moving.

Apparently it's from Herbie Hancock's "Spankalee" or "Actual Proof" or one of them cuts that he made during the seventies.

It's been out since atleast 98. I only found out about early this year.

Now there's another cut called Mahogany Brown found on Moodyman's double pack by the same name on Peace Frog Records that uses the same sample but not as sick as Black Mahogany.

It's definately several years old, at least 5 years old. I'm pretty sure that I still worked at Satellite when it came out, and that was 5 years ago.

So there are 3 different versions. Both 12" versions use more of a breakbeat, the other album version is more of a house "4 bass drum kick on the 1/4 note" type of beat.

2 different versions on the original 12". One has a much longer intro with random sounds of the city streets and vocal snippets from "Detroit 9000", and 12" also has Curtis Mayfield "Pusherman" sample from Superfly soundtrack "I'm that nigga, I'm that nigga, I'm that nigga"... Someone on this site said that the main sample is Isaac Hayes, but I'm not too sure if that info is correct.

I sold a copy to some DJ and I heard him play it that night on Twilo main floor soundsytem, it sounded sick on that monster system when the sounds panned from left to right. Great f*cking record.

and if you check the moodymann segment on the peacefrog website, (http://www.peacefrog.com/artists/moodymann/) you'll see that there's an album entitled 'black mahogany' planned for 2004.

That's the version on the bootleg I have. It's about 17 minutes long. That dischordant "hit" that starts the song sounds really familiar too. Like some early EW&F intro or Pharoa Sanders or something.

Came out around 96'.

The drum break is sampled from 'Joy' by Isaac Hayes (ala 'Power' by Ice T) but no idea what the main sample (the elec piano etc) originates from.

This one definately doesn't have a "92 feel" to it.
