QnA: Deidre – Dancer (Zanzibar, Body & Soul, Ashe) – NYC

A fixture on the underground dance music scene, you can catch Deidre’s wonderful energy at Ashe or 718 Sessions where her trademark scream lights up the dancefloor and raises the hairs on the back of your neck. Having lived through three generations of clubs (Zanzibar, Body & Soul and now Ashe) Deidre has experienced magic some people will never realize. This is her story:

WHATS THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE MADE IN HOUSE MUSIC?
That there is a sense of unity.

DEFINE HOUSE MUSIC FOR THOSE THAT DON’T KNOW?
House Music is a term I choose not to use, my preference is Disco Music. I do not use the term Club either, sounds too exclusive when I believe the music attempts to be inclusive. It is all Disco t me, and for those who know me, know that I use the word Disco as it relates to dance. So I guess to answer the question House is Disco to me.

HOW DID YOU BECOME AFFILIATED WITH ASHE?
Lou Gorbea and I met on the dance floor at Body and Soul. We then met again at WMC in Miami and he told me about a party he was starting called Destiny in Brooklyn, that formulated into Tambor which evolved to Ashe’. He asked for help and I gave it to him, and what makes our relationship so chilled is that the man can play music and be a really good friend when you need one. (Love you Lou)

WHAT IMPORTANT TRENDS DO YOU SEE IN OUR INDUSTRY?
Re-mixes of R & B to Disco sounds..That is what is going to evolve Disco music to the masses.

WHATS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT HOUSE MUSIC?
That it is dead.

Insightful.

Now where does Disco come from?...yea-yeah,
you guessed it, JAZZ!

Implications: Many, if not damn-near all the broken and spliced genres that feed, feed from Jazz music.

(of course there are other implications than this, I just wanted to highlight this point which most find trivial....)

Agreed. Disco's true roots IMHO tie to jazz.

And some of today's best house music can be considered "nu-jazz". Check Eman's latest track SLANGING. Jazz to the highest degree. (And dope too!)
