Saytek – Live from the Other Side –Zoo Project Recordings

After the success of last year’s “Live From the Seal Pit” live album, it only made sense for the rising techno whiz kid that is Saytek to record another one.
Although this year has seen him rise to underground hero status, he has been a player in the scene for almost 10 years. He’s an innovator who puts ‘live’ laptop DJs to shame. Using classic Roland hardware, a Kaos pad 3, Ableton live 8, a Novation Xiosynth and a myriad of other noise mangling gadgets, he improvises on the fly; makes music, sounds and noises at whim, winning fans like Laurent Garnier, Kevin Saunderson, John Digweed, Peace Division, Carl Cox, Claude Von Stroke in the process.
All the loops and patterns which weave and work their way throughout this mix were written, produced and performed live by Joseph Keevill. Whilst that separates him from his peers as a truly live DJ, it also adds a continuous flow to the mix, making it all the more a seamless journey from one electronic territory to another.
Taking in tribal rhythms to start, then building with spacious synth work, bouncy kicks and incendiary loops, things quickly get all tech house. With digital beams piercing the soundscapes and an ambient hum, though, it’s ethereal tech house for the head as much as the heel. As the mix progresses, there’s a dash of tougher Detroit techno, some deeper passages of heads down minimalism and sprinkles of acid - all laced together with a technical wizardry few DJs in 2009 could match.
There’s a depth and richness to Saytek’s take on house & techno which combines percussive elements with organic instrumentation to devastating effect. In its tribal, carnival overtones this mix perfectly captures the vibe of the Zoo Project... bouncy, sometimes dark some times fun, underground and made for the dancefloor.
