Greetings folks,

Not being in Montreal at this time of the year, I had to find my jazz fest and boy did I find it.

Rotterdam is the home of the World Port Jazz Fest and I had the chance to make my way there yesterday. First things first, it isn't as packed as the MTL Jazz Fest which means you can walk without bumping people left and right. I appreciated that... but the vibe wasn't as electric and uplifted as it is in my home town ;)

We arrived there at around 8:30pm and made our way through various spots. We fell on... TERRY CALLIER! Man was I happy, I had never seen him live and to be honest I am not too familiar with his production, but what a way to discover the artist. I wish he sang more though, he has such a nice voice, it was mostly instrumental.

Then we move on to Club Las Palmas (formely a parking space!! You still see the indications inside the club and the parking section number on the columns!!).

TRUBY TRIO....... I thought I was in for a show, but it was a dj set, which didn't make it any less enjoyable, those guys really have an ear for good music. Very brazilian if I may say so, great music, they played the latest remix of a Cesaria Evora track, Angola... you know that sick remix Carl Craig did, yeah, that one! BANGIN! And on the big sound system at Las Palmas, couldn't be better.

So they played from 9 to 10:30pm, but before the end of their set, we went to see Omara Portuondo, who's part of the Buena Vista Social Club. Little lady with a big heart, probably in her 70s, she had more energy than most peeps in the audience (they were sitting!!!) but couple of youngins like myself and Linda (a friend accompanying me) got some people up and boogying down to cuban music. Great show, in the end half the crowd got up and dancing.... by that time, old Omara was tired and had to go!

Then we joined our friends Gregor ('Caseem' on DHP) and Meagan back at Las Palmas to check out Dego from 4 Hero and 2000 Black. Dego was playing well, broken beats, hip hop beats, very nice, but it was getting me a bit sleepy at some point. I have to admit that the vibe wasn't all that cause the crowd at Las Palmas....well, let's just say they were a little lost. Which is too bad cause it was a very nicely mixed crowd, but people were coming and going....

In the meantime, Theo Parrish arrived. Had a quick chat with him, he seemed in good spirits. Learned from the man about the upcoming Sound Signature 19, 20 and 21 :D

He got on at 12:30. Right from the first song, the crowd got into it: I've Got Work To Do! The show was ON! Again, the crowd was a little bit lost at times, but they boogied pretty much most of the time. At one point, the light jockey thought he was some Ariel from Body and Soul and Theo just told him to quit fvcking around with it. The lightman just didn't get it, until the MC grabbed the mic and said "lights down low".... throughout the whole set, he was trying (the lightman) to put on his show, Meagan went to see him twice and told him that the artist is trying to create a vibe and that he shouldn't overshadow it with his egotestical needs. He sort of understood but got pissed, whatever!!!

So Theo got us on a beautiful journey, you'd have to be there I guess...... played a full set of deep disco and funk, mixed with house and techno (Altered States!), some early Traxx records too, "Signs of times" and another Blaze track I'm forgetting right now, "Funky Nassau" (Beginning of the end), "Leave this planet" (Charles Earland), some kind of an edit of Erotic Drum Band's "Jerky Rhythm" , Fela's "Follow Follow", this one track he made on UGE which samples that Freddie Hubbard track sample used on Pepe Bradock's "Deep burnt", "Sweet Power, Your Embrace" (James Mason) was actually the last track of his 2 hours set. BUT ... the song that did it for me by faaaaaaaaar was Block 16's "Find an oasis". What a marvelous and magical track. He had played it in Amsterdam and I had no clue what is was. This time I went up to one of the guys from Truby Trio and had to ask what it was. WOW!! And the second song of the night was his own "SAWALA SAYALE".... oh man! He mixed it all up, from techno to house to funk to disco to reggae to dub (I think I heard a Maurizio track somewhere).... it was just great.

2:30am, totally tired, no more legs, we made our way back to our little city, The Hague. Thank you Rotterdam!

Olaf hey bro
If it wasn't for Gregor, I would've never heard of it. The PR wasn't great and it showed in the number of people that were there. There were tens of thousands of people at the Parkpop festival yesterday in Den Haag!!!

But yeah, the line-up was impressive, on top of the artists I mentionned, they had, on saturday, Azymuth, Incognito, Sven van Hees, Bugz in the attic, Marc de clive-lowe and Carl Craig. Perhaps was it more packed on saturday.

mmm..i hope they had enough sponsors and/or financial support from the rotterdam city-counsel... would be a pity if they didn't manage to break-even...such a line-up costs a shitload of money i guess.....good to hear you had a good time there!
