First of all I want to make sure that you are not associating being thin with being healthy...
We do as a people need to take better care of ourselves and our health, but we need to remember that not all of us no matter how much of a gym buff is going to be a size 6. I think what's more important is that we eat right and excercise daily, love ourselves, nurture our spirits...

I think what's more important is that we eat right and excercise daily, love ourselves, nurture our spirits... i won't say that being thin is healthy...i will say that blacks in this country are too ****ing fat
and i'm sorry but the best measurement is your bmi scale if your percentage of bodyfat is too high then you are in trouble
too many sisters use the same line of "we all can't be a size six" TRUE but dammit if you're too big youre too big
and before peeps get on the eurocentric/afrocentric shit i gotta be frank...i aint seein pics of fat africans or south americans or carribbeans running all over the place...we as a americans are too ****ing fat and the FAT on black bodies is killin us (ask luther)
best measure...buy a bodyfat scale and see the truth...as thin as i have gotten my percentage of fat is still too high
btw...how many fat old people do you remember seeing (i mean over 80)

what's too ****ing fat for you? we all agree that the majority of americans are overweight and unhealthy. so is a sista too ****ing fat because she doesn't look like you want her too....we need to concentrate on getting ourselves to a healthy state physically and mentally and **** concentrating on trying to look like whomever is the trend at the moment....but i do agree we need to get up off our asses, put down that swine, red meat, fried foods, high saturated fat foods, forget about all my children, general hospital and oprah and exercise.

we as a people need to get to the thinner land Let me tell you something:
When I travel around this country, I am surprised by all of the heavy people out there. NY is actually thin per capita as compared to most of the other people out there. I understand that there are a lot of people on this board fro all ove the damn place, but Im just looking at it from a NY perspective. NYers are more active on average cause of all teh nergy it takes to get around. We typifcally don't hop in the ride and go to the mall, movies, restaurant, friends, club, work, etc. We walk or take the train and we typically don't have as much downtime. I am not saying thin is healthy, but it helps. I just went to Disney World. That's a funny place cause you get to see a cross section of America and let me let you in on a little secret: America is overweight.

Two women in my family were too vain, excerised everyday but had very bad eating habits, one got cancer and the other (my mother) got a rare kidney disease (at that time only known for whites to have it), they both died. My male cousin, was big and healthy for years, loss 150 lbs but never drank water or ate healty afterwards (he's dead as well).
The most important thing is to focus on being healthy as well as losing weight to a comfortable state not to what the standards are.
Funny how back in the 1920 thru 50's the average woman size was 14 and curvy (I am a 16 and curvy). Now it's considered obese. Go figure

BMI does not tell me shit unless it's a BMI designed for Black people. When I was in the military they went by that, and primarily sista's would litterally kill themselves trying to get to a certain BMI and weight level when in deed the bottom line is that we are built differently for different reasons. If I am HEALTHY that's all that matters...

nevertheless..i'm sorry if i'm offending any fatties but fat ain't where its at (healthwise)

At one point she decided that she was tired of it and she was determined to win the battle. She lost 100 lbs in about 6 months, then she lost her life to a massive stroke. In one our previous discussions about weight someone, I believe it was you, Mark, made a reference to the size and popularity of the weight-loss industry being an indication of the importance of being moderate in size (I'm paraphrasing here, so I know that wasn't exactly the point). My response was that when people bring that up, they never talk about the size of the snack food and desert industry. I got no response.
My advice: eat as healthy as you can, but don't deprive yourself. Excercise as much as you are comfortable with, but don't torture yourself. Limit the toxins you take in (cigs, liquor, processed foods) but indulge in the things you enjoy. Moderation in all things. And if you are big because you are happy, then be happy you are big.

we as a people need to get to the thinner land YO, I'm not up north on a daily basis but I can tell you this. I've never scene so many over weight people (no matter what race) in my entire life while living down here in Georgia. The kids at the schools I work for are over weight (I'm talking 1st 2nd and 3rd grade). The food they feed the students at all the schools is fattening. High carb lunches, greasy chicken (MHD remember them steak nuggets). The lemonade is so damn sweet.......
I'd hate to see these kids grow up with an early stage of Diebetes or heart disease. Georgia is already one of the top unhealthy states in the country.

If I am HEALTHY that's all that matters... Ashaki I got something better than that. I modeled for an up and coming Black designer in the late eighties. At that time I was a 9-10 and was told that I had to much junk in the trunk and my thighs were too big. So stupid me went on drinking, drug binges and had an eating disorcer until I got to a size 5-6. My family was very concerned about me and made me see a doctor. I almost died and didn't know it, never told anyone until recently. But the doctor told me that if I kept it up I would have been dead in a month.
It took almost a year to gain my weight back and start loving myself again. I was conditioned to believe that I was too fat for Black Modeling. Oh I never lost my booty or thighs, I had a small waist (23-24 inches) no breasts and large bottom. Do you know that some of the designers had the nerve to say I wasn't proportioned right and nothing looked right on my body. Crazy things we do for vanity. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

Excellent discussion as always. I am trying to slowly make life long changes in my eating habits. Adding more fruits, vegetables and grains. I excercise at least 3-4 times a week (biking, tennis or running) during the warm months. Diabetes runs in my family so I'm trying but the weight is not coming off like it used too. I have a women friend who signed up for Jenny Craig and has lost about 65 pounds. The special food you have to buy it way to expensive for me ($100 week).

if you can find a way to burn off an extra 400 calories a day you WILL see results...i got a versaclimber years ago for my other..she never used it and now i have it am putting it to good use
i like stairclimbing because you can do it in every kind of weather..some of the units are expensive but this is an investment in you
the other good advice - eliminate sodas and fruit drinks from your diet and cut back on starches...the pounds will melt away

Also there are certain foods you can eat that are natural fat burners such as grapefruit, cabbage, and some others that help speed up your metabolism...it is important to know that we all have a bottom line weight....
also, like YBI said you gotta exercise...
for me I love walking, I walk to and from work and anywhere I need to go that's within walking distance and time limitations...that's one thing I loved about NY walking....I am also taking a kickboxing class now, but I would like to take my exercise up a notch without over doing it...

it is very important to note the glycemic index of the foods you take in as some things are quicly converted to glucose
start watching your carb intake and try to limit it to about 250 grams per day 9thats tough)
with a family history this is a great preventive measure and as is now being noted atkins was right about a lot of things regarding diet

My father has diabetes and with him being pretty slim, it helped his condition. However, he still can't let go of the pork, which gives him high blood pressure. As for myself, I think I eat to much chicken because that's the only meat I eat on a regular (pretty much daily) basis. I do eat fish and turkey, but chicken is sometimes the best available food at the time. I do drink a lot of grapefruit and Welch's grape juice. Welch's grape is a very good source of nutrients, and one 6 oz. glass has the equivalent of eating your daily serving of fruits. I should go work for Welch's. ;)

We live in a throw away society. We throw good food away, good clothes, good cars, and good kids in the trash when we can no longer handle our situation. We allow people other than ourselves raise our own children. We put blame on many people other than ourselves. The term jealousy has been replaced with the word "Hate". We don't want to help eachother out for fear of being overtaken.

I think the difference between US and EU lays in the fact that in the US the rules regarding food safety are much much less stringent then they are overhere..Overhere, policy is guided in general by the 'precaution' principle. This means that the EU regulation will not allow certain foods to be kept or introduced in the food chain if there's even the slightest doubt or risk that this will entail health risk for consumers. In the US , the approach is much more directed at 'post-factum' intervention. A product will be allowed, unless it's proven as a fact that it's unhealthy. I think the main example for this difference in policy is the whole 'hormones' businnes..The US and EU have great commercial disputes over the fact that we here do not allow hormones to be used in food, since we reckon it 'could' be dangerous on the long run.
I've only visited the States once (NYC) and to be honest, I was quite shocked when I visited some supermarkets (somewhere in Brooklyn)..I do not know if that can be generalised or not, but I was already getting sick when I saw what was exposed there..I'm not saying that i'm a super healthy eater , but I would not be able to live in an environment in which you would have huge difficulties to find fresh, not prepacked food.. Yet, I do want to add that we in Belgium are slowly going in the same direction..
just some thoughts..

just some thoughts.. This is a rather interesting statement and I think that people should really understand what Lyot is saying. I worked with a girl from Peru for a couple of months and she had the same feelings as Lyot. She could not believe how difficult it was to find fresh fruits and vegetables when shopping. Her concept of fresh food is not what we usually find and buy at our local grocery store. The only way she could find the food she needed was to find a specialy shop. Unfortunately these shops that IMO are way better than your average grocery are way too expensive. On the other hand, the way this food is processed and grown, you'd wonder why aren't all foods made this way.

Speaking of Peru, We were there hiking (to Machu Pichu (sp?) and everything we had to eat was prepared by cooks, fresh and not prepackaged. Hell the chickens were a day old from being slaughtered. The Cooks we had also pre-picked veggies and fruit from the farms we had passed. Can you believe the popcorn was actually popped on an open fire? We even had natural hot cocoa (yes, real cocoa) it made me feel funny but I enjoyed it. I was freaked out at first but then asked why? It's amazing that all these years of convenience we have the nerve to be picky about produce in other countries.
It's strange how our country markets off of the obese rather joining weight loss/fitness programs or eating fast food. Do you actually beleive that there will be a major overhaul of our diets?

Bottom line is you need to watch the food you consume and get PLENTY of excersise. Excersise is VITAL...Also the best thing to do is to eat 6 or 7 times a day, smaller portions of course. You do not have to totally cut out fatty foods or high carb foods as long as they are eaten in moderation along with some real good make you sweat type of excersizing. ANOTHER very important key is to make sure you get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. You do these 3 things and stick with it, you'll see the pounds come right off and you'll feel great.
I am not overweight or fat, but I am out of shape and do have a little jelly belly, not to mention I have been feeling run down and tired a lot lately..and then again I don't get half of the sleep I should be getting either.
I don't believe in cutting carbs or fat out altogether. Carbs and fat need to be in your body in moderation or in small doses. You just need to make sure not to pig out and keep eating just because the food tastes good. Know your limits and when you are starting to feel a little full, stop eating and that's it. Feed yourself 6-7 times a day and your metabolism will surely increase. This way you are not loading all that food into your system at once. Instead you are giving your body enough time to digest the SMALLER portion you just consumed.
Take up jogging, bike riding, fast walking...ANYTHING to get your heart rate up and start to feel better in almost record time. Anything is possible if you REALLY put your mind into it...

Take up jogging, bike riding, fast walking...ANYTHING to get your heart rate up and start to feel better in almost record time. Anything is possible if you REALLY put your mind into it... What in the hell is up with the tired feeling...I have been out of gas...no energy...it has been scaring me, and I gets plenty of sleep...I think I've been drinking too much lately...
Finally, I just started running again....it's been 2-3 weeks since I ran last before Sunday. Doesn't seem long, but I was really slacking on the Cardio (Eating whatever, too :( ) I usually run for at least 40 mins at a time (It feels good to sweat it all out, again). I weigh 185, but I should be at 175 (my fighting weight :D ).
I'm glad someone brought up the hormones in the food here. The American diet is the Franken diet. When I first moved here, I couldn't believe the size of tomatoes and eggs. The 'extra large' eggs in Nigeria would be a small here. Couldn't eat chicken for at least year 'cause I didn't believe the meat was really chicken. There's an amazing difference in taste between the food I eat here and when I go home. It's a shame we have to take supplements in addition to our food 'cause the food doesn't contain enough nutrients on its own. When I have the land and money, I'll have my own farm.

#1...definitely NOT ENOUGH SLEEP
#2...hay fever season...allergies are wiping me out..
#3...eating too many carbs (as I have been lately) will make you sluggish or tired
#4 ....been very busy and occupied lately which goes back to #1, not enough sleep
Ashaki, you should be very careful with your alcohol consumption...alcohol is very bad for you. I have seriously cut back on my consumption of alcohol...not saying I don't drink at all anymore but I hardly drink now....last time I got all drunk was in Miami for the WMC :D

A MAJOR problem in the inner cities of NYC is CHINESE FOOD. Just the other day I dorve down Gates Ave from Bushwick all the way to the end. Every block has a Chinese restaurant. Some had 4 on 1 block. And these are the short blocks. Fried chicken wings with french fries,or pork fried rice. Fried shrimp, fried imitation crab, fried, fried , fried. They have tons of oil in those holes in the walls. I see all the little girls that are in these places. And that is why they are so chubby at such a young age. Genreal Tso's chicken has about 60 grams of fat.
We need to leave thta crap alone...You wanna eat Chinese ..go to Chinatown..aint no chicken wings there

There should be a law where restaraunts are required to post the fat content next to an entree on the menu. I know we are responsible for what we eat but what these restaraunts are doing is boardering on criminal. Absolutely no regard for your health or nutrition. Timmy, I had no idea General Tso's Chicken is 60 grams of fat  . Madison has lots of Chinese all you can eat buffets which I do go to occassionally. There is probably little regulation as to what someone can prepare and serve you in a restaraunt.. The question I have is if you really knew the fat and sodium content of a lot of food you eat when going out would you still eat it ? I won't be eating General Tso's chicken anymore thats for sure.

Haven't had any fast food in about two weeks.
Fresh Scottish Salmon is a natural healthy choice containing many nutritional benefits. For instance compared to hamburger, steak, and pork loin, salmon contains 20 % more protein. Salmon is a highly digestible protein packed with vitamin A and carotenoids, which are thought to help prevent cancer. Additional nutritional benefits associated with salmon, which have been well researched and documented in medical journals include:
An average portion of salmon provides over half the daily allowance of protein.
In addition to vitamin A and carotenoids, salmon contains B vitamins, particularly niacin and vitamin D, which helps a body to absorb calcium.
Salmon contains far less saturated fat than an equal portion of virtually any other meat or poultry protein source.
Salmon is an excellent source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, known as omega-3 fatty acids – these are the “good” kind of fat, which have been associated with reducing heart disease and inhibiting the onset of inflammatory diseases. It is no coincidence that Japan consumes the highest amount of salmon per head, and has the lowest level of heart disease in the world.
Omega-3 fatty acids are a nutritional benefit found in all oily fish and are not contained in any meat and few other seafood products in any significant degree.

other foods high in iron include spinach, pine nuts, apricots, cashews, kidney beans, lima beans, lentils, wheat germ, oysters, bran cereals, tofu, pumpkin seeds and the list goes on & on. eating foods high in vitamin c help absorb iron better into the system.
seafood is good but not regularly due to the high levels of mercury in the water.
Mercury Contamination:
Mercury contamination of seafood is a persistent public health threat that poses a significant risk to children and women of child-bearing age. While some mercury is naturally occurring in the environment, activities such as coal-fired power generation and industrial processes such as battery manufacturing, have redistributed the substance and created mercury compounds that are toxic even at extremely low levels of exposure.
Public Health Advisories:
Public Health Advisories According to the US Food and Drug Administration (January 2001) women of reproductive age should not consume any swordfish, shark, tilefish or king mackerel because they contain levels of methylmercury deemed unsafe for consumption. Additionally, tuna is considered to have high levels of methylmercury but was dubiously left out of the FDA advisory. Several U.S. Senators as well as consumer advocacy and public health organizations have inquired about the omission and a federal investigation into the process is underway.
Tuna fish and other seafood products are the main source of methylmercury in our diet. The term Mad as a Hatter was coined to describe the symptoms that workers in a felt hat manufacturing plant contracted as a resultof a mercury-containing process used in the factory. Mad Hatter symptoms included: excitability, mental instability, tremors, depression, and personality disorders.
Facts About Mercury:
Mercury accumulates in the human liver, kidney, brain and blood and can harm a child's developing nervous system leading to loss of motor skills, mental retardation and other birth defects. Mercury can also cause kidney failure, cardiovascular collapse and genetic damage in adults. Mercury is initially transported through water to fish where it becomes methylmercury. Through a process known as bioaccumulation larger, longer-living fish that feed on smaller fish accumulate heightened levels of contamination. Top-level predators such as swordfish have the highest levels of contamination and pose the greatest risk for pregnant mothers, children and women of child-bearing age. While humans come into contact with mercury through skin contact and inhalation, the most prevalent form of mercury contamination comes through direct ingestion of methylmercury- contaminated seafood. Minamata Disease Methylmercury contamination of seafood jumped into the public consciousness in the 1950s with the outbreak of Minamata Disease in a small fishing village in Japan. Residents of Minamata began developing health abnormalities including dizziness, slurred speech and a decrease in basic motor skills, which occurred in over 3000 residents, both young and old. Public health officials determined the outbreak was attributable to the high consumption of seafood from Minamata Bay, which was heavily contaminated by the direct dumping of mercury from the Chisso Corporation, a chemical manufacturing plant. In all, 46 people died from the outbreak.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Chooseseafood that is healthy for you and the oceans. There are seafood choices that are both fished in a sustainable manner and are good for your health. Try these fish for a break: Alaska halibut, wild caught Alaska salmon and New Zealand hoki. For other healthy seafood options visit: web page (http://www.seaturtles.org)

we as a people need to get to the thinner land YO, I'm not up north on a daily basis but I can tell you this.

Today's busy lifestyles sometimes mean we don't have time to cook, or we must eat while we are out. Most choices available in restaurants today are very high in fat and calories. However, there are a few selections available that won't bust your fat budget.
According to Restaurant Confidential, one Bloomin Onion with the Dipping Sauce contains 2130 calories and 163 grams of fat! Leave out the sauce and you still consume 1690 calories and 119 grams of fat, 57 of them saturated.
Other shocking revelations
The average Chinese restaurant serving of General Tso's Chicken contains 1600 calories and 59 grams fat. Kung Pao Chicken has 1620 calories and 76 grams fat

Yet, I do want to add that we in Belgium are slowly going in the same direction..
just some thoughts.. double word, you have to learn how to ignore 98% of the shit they sell in us supermarkets, with basically nothing being organic or natural, i get ill thinking about the multiple aisles of frozen pre-cooked synthetic meals that come in boxes, neon-glowing vegetables/fruits, and 3 gallon coca-cola bottles, sick. the saddest thing is that as lyot alluded to, this artificial food is big business and they have serious interests in spreading their freedom fries around the world. the new world democracy must entail a prevision for preventing the lowest classes any access to real food. the funny thing is most people around the world dont realize how deep the labrat american tradition is. lyot, just curious, have you ever heard of seedless fruits before?
Donger, americans are not physically fat because the rest of the world is starving nor is the rest of the world starving because americans are eating all of the available food in the world, americans are not responsible, there is a constructed american culture where being unhealthy and obese are natural derivatives of an environment that places nothing more sacred than money... which precedes everything that makes life worthwhile to me such as family/friends, women, music, food/wine, drugs, rollerdiscos, etc. this country only began because some people were looking to make money, and they've succeeded by sacrificing the above.
