Question:
Do ALL re-issues have the re-issue date on the record's label? Are there exceptions?

Nope. Some re-issues are quite obvious (barcodes, different graphics, etc.) but some look EXACTLY like the original. Usually in this case, you try to check out the jacket of the record. For instance, Cloud One: Disco Juice. The reissue and the original are exactly the same, except that the repress has a plain black/white jacket, where as the original came in a blue jacket with the letters DISCO in white and in large font. Always be sure to ask questions.

No
also you can usually tell by wear & tear. chances are an original copy that's shrink wrapped (most original copies floating around are not) will have some kind of noticeable markings like ring wear. if you have a discerning ear a digitally remastered reissue is a dead giveaway.

What is the def answer on the date?? Def answer is NO. Not all have dates on them. Some do, inscribed within the label and the outer groove, but a lot do not.
magic_juan
depends on the re-issue. eg: roy ayers, original date, stuff that's re-issued by a lable other than the original will have both dates eg: randy weston's & niles litlebig "african rhythms", the pharaohs "awakening" & "in the basement". what's the record in question?

What is the def answer on the date?? What is the record/reissue in question? The Catalog number cut in the deadwax may also help you tell if it is a fake...

Ever find a record for dirt cheap and cant believe it? Too scared to ask the question in fear of letting the seller what they are giving away for nothing?
Well this question is really about the Sylvia Striplin LP.
Everything leans towards it being real; wear and date of 1982 on the label.
But then I read that HERB POWERS mastered it and looked for his personal signature; the smiley face....NADA, just the serial numbers.
So it could be fugayzee and I wouldnt be mad because I didnt drop a grip on it...just curious.

I think that was just reissued. If it is original, it's worth a lot.
Sylvia Striplin -- Give Me Your Love (reissue) . . . LP (http://www.dustygroove.com/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/dga/search.cgi?usersrch=Sylvia+Striplin+&issearch=yes&GO.x=18&GO.y=8)
The Sylvia Striplin was def. re-issued recently.
Peace.

Is the recent Sylvia LP a legitimate reissue or is it a bootleg?
I haven't ordered it because I'm sick of online stores selling "reissues" that are really just muddy-sounding rip offs..

Good thread...
That's why I can't stand those Scorpio re-issues.
They are legit, but the older re-issues of theirs
have NO INDICATION WHATSOVERE that they are not
original pressings.
BUT, you can tell (after you've bought it)
because the labels have a sterile, dare I say it,
"DIGITAL" feel about them...too clean, slightly
different colors.
Also, the covers are usually digitally scanned
or color Xeroxed from the original covers, and
if you look at them with a magnifying glass,
you can see the pixels that would not be there
on the original artwork.
IMO, re-issues should be identified as such, somewhere on the outside.
Scopio has actually started doing that, with
a small glue-on sticker that says
"Manufactured by Rhino Records".
This is a good thing, as it means that the record
was made from a legitimate tape or CD,
though the best VINYL re-issues should obviously be
made from an ANALOGUE master tape or high-quality
equivalent.
Very few legit re-issues use the Analogue
master or similar quality source material.
You'd be surprised how many legit vinyl
re-issues are made from the commercial CD.
ALSO, in my book and also as far as the RIAA is concerned,
RE-ISSUE = LEGITIMATE.
COUNTERFEIT = ILLEGAL RIP-OFF.
I'm simply commenting on the ethics of
counterfeits versus pirates.
For example:
D***y K****t edits on cheesey no-name 12" = pirate.
D***y K****t edits on legal re-issue = legitimate, or legal edited re-issue.
Counterfeits suck because you don't know what you're
getting.
Un-identified "re-issues" (like most Scorpio re-issues) suck because you don't know what the
source is...vinyl or DAT tape, or Analogue tape
or CD or what.
Here are the RIAA's definitions (paraphrased):
Pirates = illegal copies that simply re-produce
the music without trying to look like originals.
Counterfeits = exact copies of the packaging, meant
to fool the buyer into thinking it's original.
Counterfeits are also illegal reproductions of
the music of course.
Bootlegs = unlicensed reproductions of the music
from concerts or unreleased mixes, out-takes, etc.
Most people, including myself, use the term
bootleg loosely and inacurately, for convenience'
sake.
