Were George, Weezie and Florence the only black folk on this special? I went shopping for a minute during the broadcast.
And no Thelma! graemlins/mecry.gif

The Bob Newhart skit was classic:
"I had this dream that the Governor of California had this German accent, and pronounced it 'Cally-fornia'".

I grew up on CBS (before cable, it was the only network we could get in clearly in my neck of the woods as the only station in town was a CBS affiliate). So I was compelled to watch and flash back.
CBS gets the prize for having some of the funniest comedy shows in the 60's/70's, but they don't get the prize for having showcased blacks in starring roles. NBC gets the prize for "The Nat King Cole Show, which aired in 1957, "I Spy" starring Bill Cosby, "Julia" starring Diana Carroll, and "The Flip Wilson Show" - all of the latter which aired in the late 1960's - and then "Sanford & Son" which aired in 1972. The closest CBS could come was the airing of "Fat Albert" and "The Bill Cosby Show (starring Lola Folana), both in the early 70's, before "Good Times" which was a spinoff of "Maude", which was spun off from "All In The Family" (which also spun off "The Jeffersons"). And let's not forget Peggy, the secretary to Mike Mannix, a 70's cop show (they forgot to show her) and "Tony Orlando and Dawn", a variety show which aired in 1973.
