here's where you wanna go : Paradise Island, Bahamas has a yoga retreat there. They fly in the swamis from India, and it's real cheap. best of all, you are doing yoga on the beach in the bahamas. what else do you want? you'll find THAT right next door at the Club Med.

do a search for "yoga retreat" and "Paradise Island". You'll find it.

Question: Did you start from the floor and rise up or bend over backwards until you touched the floor?

ncho, i love yoga!
i take astanga yoga with my husband, kenspank. i take classes 3 times a week and try to practice a little something each day.
there is no room in yoga for posture envy or competition... and it certainly shouldn't hurt. there are things that push you to the edge of comfort, there are things that challenge... the beauty is in being exactly where you are at that moment. if you can do more than you did last week, that's great. if you did something that was a challenge, celebrate the fact that you tried.
if there is a pose that your instructor shows you how to do, but you get in it and it's hurting, ask your instructor to show you something less advanced. you can also focus your mind on a concept or an aspect of the posture that will help to ease the strain.
in the case of a backbend, or wheel posture, you can try the bridge pose: resting the shoulders and back of the head on the floor while pushing up through the hips, expand the chest and pull the shoulder blades closer together underneath you. you can also support the back with the hands or hold the ankles or just rest the palms flat on the floor. the bridge provides a warm up for the back while allowing the chest, the heart chakra, to expand greatly. if you are feeling discomfort (not pain) breath deeply, keeping your exhales longer than your inhales and send your breath to the area. if you feel pain, back down a bit or take a rest. the pic i've included shows the variation.

namaste.

-g- </font>[/QUOTE]kenspank is actually the one who got me into it in 1999. he sought it out to help with some aches and pains he was going through at the time. i've been practicing regularly in mt. rainier since last september... at a place called joe's on 34th, off of rhode island, just outside of northeast.
i've got two teachers, one is the kinda new agey, the other is kind of hard core. i learn lots from both and appreciate their styles. if you're interested in popping by one of the classes, i can give you more info.

I have been involved with yoga off and on for a year. *4 months straight now!* That backbend posture I can do easily now. My primary instructor teaches Hatha and Kemetic Yoga.
My second instructor teaches Ashtanga(Power)Yoga. That class is a straight aerobic workout.
