NEW YORK (CNN) -- A major power outage simultaneously struck several large cities in the United States and Canada late Thursday afternoon.

Cities affected include New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Toronto, Ontario; and Ottawa, Ontario. The power outage occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street were shut down, including all area airports and the Long Island Railroad. The airports were operating on back-up power and operations were reported to be normal, officials said.

The New York City Police Department said they were trying to determine what happened. A Con Edison transformer on East 14th Street in Manhattan was afire, CNN learned.

Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.

But anyways, hubby was on his way into the city to pick me up after work to take me out to dinner for the special occasion...

..so right now he's on the 59th Street bridge completely gridlocked graemlins/mecry.gif coming into the city and me...I'm in the building where I work waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay downtown....I guess this will be the birthday I'll never forget! graemlins/grinyes.gif

Then again, I'm the lucky one since the building is running on generator power...what the heck, too much information to slap down on a chatboard but hey, the cable connection to the TV in the conference room just went out and I'm out of touch again, with the world that is,,,, but I got great pretty flowers from my coworkers today and at least my cubby smells good graemlins/beerchug.gif

Some parts of Jersey, the Bronx, and Queens have power. Not sure about anywhere else. There are still a ton of people on the street and MAD gridlock...strings of pearls (headlights) on the FDR and West Side Highway.

Everyone is out of the subways but they are not running yet. The news said it would take about six hours to get the trains back up.

Its amazing this building is like a little self-contained island, we have full power, air conditioning is on, not blasting but on, I'm on my computer, just no cable reception, the radio reception in the building is piss ass poor so I can't get any of the news stations....some of these offices have couches, I've claimed mine, gonna camp out.... graemlins/grinyes.gif
