Moms was cleaning out her house and gave me a couple of bags of some of my old stuff. Inside were two games from Avalon Hill; Panzer Blitz ans Panzer Leader. These are strategic simulation boardgames that recreate historic battles. Basically games that stretched the mind and the imagination and required lots of thought.

Wanting to relive my youth, when I was smart ( and i mean fucking brilliant) I decided to look up Avalon Hll. THEY HAVE BEEN BOUGHT UP BY HASBRO and no longer doing the wide variety of strategy games anymore. I despaired because it seems that this type of game - along with Chess, Go -Maku and hell checkers are being shunned in fvor of electronic toys most of which require little thought and no imagination.

I cried for the future.

i did some research and found some new small publishers and will explore but i really was upset when i realized that the intellectual pursuits of yesteryear are being slowly abandoned. And I wept ( not like a punk ass pussy mind you , but in frustration at what we are losing - and it as just teary eyes...cause I AINT GAY)

If anyone can hip me to any strategic gaming publishers please feel free.

now back to being the same fuckhead i usually am

Its not really my past that upset me - i'm not that maudlin its that it seems to me that higher order intellectual pursuits are falling off the radar screen...Hell the only way I can get a game of chess these days is to go on yahoo - and thats so impersonal

I play a lot online, too (on EA/Pogo as AftrHrsDisco). I'd love to dole out a little abuse on some of you DHP'ers sometime. Get at me and let's set something up.

I used to play Panzer Leader and Axis and Allies. Magus, a lot of that stuff is up on eBay regularly; also, I do believe there are still some manufacturers of "pencil and paper" strategy games. I'll see if I can dig up some URLs...

Hey Magus,

I'll ask my lil bro, his is into all those board game (D&D) and one other one I've seen him playing(forgot the name) which is a strategic battle game, where an army tries to over come the other I think there is up to 4 players(4 Armies) and if you like you can unite forces with another army to beat ur mutual opponent, until of course its up to you two and then you guys have to battle each other.. Anyway I will try to find out for you..

Also he is trying to get a board game he has invented published so he might have some ideas

As far as chess goes, my brother and I had a whole lot of Bobby Fisher books back in the 70s, and used to play chess all the time.

not as much of a full on strategy game but,... remember Master Mind...

i used to trip on the dude (with the woman at his elbow) on the box, kinda looked like Dr. No or some other James Bond movie-type, evil character.

First off, a large number of the old Avalon Hill games are being reprinted by Hasbro, so you'll be able to get them soon.

However, there are several companies who still make the good stuff.

Mayfair games makes a lot of good games but also imports, translates and licenses them from other countries. The most popular of them being the Settlers of Catan series.

Flying Buffalo has been in the business since Viet Nam and their owner, Rick Loomis is still in the game.

Steve Jackson Games makes a lot of good games as well as some damn funny ones.

Then there are a lot of small game manufacturers out there. When's the last time you've been to a game shop, man?

There's some good stuff out there.
