ello,
in september i will be visiting brasil for 25 days. Any brasilian house-heads (or people who've been there) visting this board who can give me some tips/hints/etc. concerning music/nightlife/any other aspect of the country? Of course i already bought the lonely planet. We (me and my gf) will start out for a week in/around Rio, then move up to the amazone-area (Manaus) where we will stay for around a week, before moving to the east-cost (Recife). The last 3 days we will stay in/around Salvador de Bahia. We haven't booked any accomodations/made any real plans, except for 2 days in Rio when we arrive, and the airplane flights inside the country. So we're flexible in our plans.
ok, really looking forward for any feedback ;)

another real Brasillian tip...don't get killed.
Just about every person I know that has been to Rio has been robbed at knife or gun point. I have even heard a suggestion that you should carry a fake "throw-away" wallet with $20 in it just for thieves.
I haven't been but I have heard it is worse than even places like Mexico City, which can be a little rough. I have found street smarts go a long way in places like this.

If you go to Sao Paulo...hook up with Anderson Soares. Great guy and a great DJ/producer who is really spearheading deep house down there. He has a nice radio show as well.
Sao Paulo has some good clubs, though "tech-house" was the order of the day when I was down there in November. (Emphasis on "tech," not house.) Be sure to check out any of the big drum 'n' bass parties down there...they are very passionate about their jungle! Also, be sure to load up on your Bossa collection down there!
I was in Sao Paulo the whole time...but everyone I know who has been to Brazil has told me to forget about Rio and Sao Paulo, and spend the whole time up in Bahia.

I have found street smarts go a long way in places like this. mmm that's strange, i know several people who've been to brasil and rio, and none of them was robbed that way....most of them weren't even robbed, and the ones that did get robbed got it the same way as in Amsterdam or Barca ;)
anyway, the spare "robbers" wallet sounds like a smart thing..

I spent two months last year in Brazil and loooooved it. Rio is really kickin, if you go there make sure to check out an area called 'Lapa' on a Friday or Saturday night - it's near the city centre and unfortunately is in a pretty dodgy neighbourhood but it's amazing - a serious street party, thousands of people partying, great Brazilian music (with some hip hop thrown in) and lots and lots of women.
Rio is pretty dangerous - although the golden rule seems to be just hand over your money if somebody asks for it - while I was in Rio, a Swiss tourist was shot dead by a couple of 12 year old hoods on a bus because he wouldn't hand over his wallet.
I wasn't too mad on Salvador to be honest - lots of dealers, pimps etc. in the main touristy areas, plenty of hassle.
Make sure you don't miss out on the Iguazu falls - the most awesome sight on earth.
Enjoy.

Rio has gotten REAL dodgy in the past year or so.
I've been 4 times over the past 3 years and this last time (Feb 2003) things had gotten MUCH worse than they used to be.
I used to walk around Copacabana at night to go to the grocery store etc with no problems at all but this past trip I did get robbed at "gunpoint" although I'm 95% sure the guy didn't have a gun. He only got $3 from me (even tho I had about $250 dollars total on me) and he didn't get my wallet (drivers license, credit cards etc) so it wasn't a big deal, but it happened a half a block from my hotel in an area that used to be quite and clean.
I would suggest hitting Ipanema instead of Copacabana for beach & bar activity. The beach is nicer and the area is safer. At night, go a few blocks in from the beach in Ipanema and there are a few sections with multiple restaraunts and bars that are jumping. Tell a taxi driver you want to go to Shenanigans in Ipanema and that will put you in the right area.
If you're in Centro around lunch time check out this pasta place and this churrasco (bar-b-que) spot.... they are both on Rua Beneditinos about the middle of the block. The Churrasco and pasta spots are side by side and both are basically all you can eat for the equivalent of $5-8 US dollars MAX. I think I paid 10 Reals ($3.50) for the pasta last time I was there and its pretty damn good.
All of those get CRAMMED between noon and 1:30 so be careful of timing.
There's a club in Rio Sul shopping center but I've never been there. Ronaldo used to own a club in Ipanema called R1 that wasn't bad (but no house music) and there are some spots in Centro but I don't remember any of the names/locations. I haven't experienced any good house music in Rio yet so don't get your hopes too high.
If you have the money/time/desire, I would highly suggest you go to the HeliPad and catch a helicopter tour around Rio, its absolutely amazing. It costs somewhere in the range of $350-$400 Reals (about $120 US) for a 10-15 minute ride, but its worth it. You see all of the beaches, Centro, part of the neighborhoods and you go up to Corcovada and hover around the statue to get pics all in a helicopter (which can be an experience in itself if you've never been in one).
Have fun and again, definitely be cautious and stay away from the flavelas.
Peace

Olaf If you go to Salvador de Bahia, check out the capoeira (it's a martial art, dance, song and game) scene. You will probably come across a capoeira roda (circle). If you do, tell me about it.

Hey Olaf,
whats up?
Don't know if Sao Paulo is in your plans but maybe we can hook up in Salvador. I'm gonna play there early September.
BTW, don't worry about violence... Robberies can happen in Rio, in NY, in London, in Paris, anywhere...
We're not into war so, we dont have to hold guns to walk on the streets... ;)
I must admit that bad things happened in a small period of time in Rio but, it's not big as the news presents.
You have to be careful anyway and definitly you have to stay in Ipanema. The best beach in the world! Wonderful place, beautiful people, just amazing!
Concerning music, if you're expecting to listen to some good house music, I'm sorry to say that you'll suffer a little. Not much going on downhere...
Rio still playing freestyle (Miami Bass, Sao Paulo (as always) keeps into the harder sounds with just few small parties left to the soulful sounds and Salvador is not know as a city with good nightclubs but you're going to get mad with Olodum or Timbalada live performances.
Drop me a line when you come down!
Peace,
Anderson

thanks peeps! Anderson thanx for the tips too! i don't think we'll be able to make Salvador earlier than the end of september, and Sao Paulo is a littlebit to much for our schedule. I've found a real nice island though, near Rio, Ihla Grande, and we'll definately stay there for some days before we fly up to Manaus. I've talked with some Brasilian (music)peeps about our trip and it seems regular streetsmart (like i have to use in Amsterdam and Barca too hehe) gets us a long way.. luckily i am used to do that, so i don't worry to much about it..... definately looking forward to it...especially finding some nice bossa nova spots etc...
hope to post some pics when we return
