Somebody forwarded this to me. Sorry if it has been posted already.
www.thesource.com (http://www.thesource.com)
The Source Magazine executives David Mays and Raymond Scott will air publicly for the first time an explosive audio track recorded by Eminem that he has kept hidden since 1993. In the unnamed song, Eminem voices his opinions about Black women and Black people in general
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
?I make music to make you sick of fake music,
Hate music like devil worship and Satan music.?
?Look at these eyes baby blue baby just like yourself
If they were brown Shady lose Shady sits on the shelf
Let?s do the math: if I was Black I would?ve sold half
I didn?t have to graduate from Lincoln High School to know that.?
?I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley to do Black music so selfishly
And use it to get myself wealthy.?
--Eminem
Written below are the lyrics to Eminem's freestyle from 1993. It was released today {Tues, Nov 18 2003 } by The Source Magazine which has an ongoing beef with Em. Dave Mays and Ray Benzino attempetd to make the case that this song was proof positive that Eminem was not only racist but also someone who was trying to co-opt Hip Hop.
According to Anthony Bozza, the author of the just released New York Times bestseller WHATEVER YOU SAY I AM: The Life And Times of Eminem (Crown), the tape soun! ded like Eminem was drunk. Bozza who attended yesterday's Source Magazine press conference specualted that Em was venting in a really nasty way after being heartbroken by an African American woman.
However heartbreak or not, there are many sisters who aren't going to be feeling him after reading the and hearing the lyrics. The Source Magazine owners promised that they would be releasing the tape by including it in every Source Magazine sold in their next issue.
The fall out on this will be something to watch..
EMINEM circa 1993
Track 1
There?s so many styles I might get thrown
And here?s the place where I like to roam
And all the girls that I like to bone
Have the big butts, no they don?t
?Cause I don?t like that nigger @#%$
I?m just here to make a bigger hit
When I be kickin the hypest, dopest rhyme
Just say that Eminem is the best MC of all times?Yeah!
I?m running out of breath so here?s Chaos Kid with the flow of death
Track 2
I seen a Black girlfriend and I kissed her
I kissed her; I placed it on her cheek
And she didn?t come back til next week
Now it was next week and she was back again
Wanting to kiss a white kid
So she was my girlfriend, we started going out
But that?s okay because we were Black and white
Blacks and whites they sometimes mix
But Black girls only want your money cause they?re dumb chicks
So I?ma say like this
Don?t date a Black girl, take it as a diss
If you want, but if you don?t
I?ma tell you like this, I surely won?t
Never date a Black girl because Blacks only want your money
And that @#%$ aint funny
So I?ma say look honey
Why do you do this?
You know, you step up to me like you a Brutus
Then you try to grab my spinach
Because its green and that?s cash
So get outta here, ?cause I don?t need your ass
I said that before, but that?s okay because like I said you?re a whore
Black! girls and white girls just don?t mix
Because Black girls are dumb and white girls are good chicks
White girls are good; I like white girls
I like white girls all over the world
White girls are fine and they blow my mind
And that?s why I?m here now telling you this rhyme
?Cause Black girls, I really don?t like
We don?t mix, it?s like riding a bike
When you?re peddling hard, uphill both ways
You know it?s kinda hard and that?s why I say to you
I?m giving you a little advice
Don?t date a Black girl, if you do it once you won?t do it twice
You won?t ever do it again because they?ll take your money
And that aint funny
So I?ma say look honey
I thought he said that before
But like I said again you?re nothing but a big whore
So when mike catch on the bass line
That?s okay ?cause we will not just waste time
I?ll get straight to the point
Black girls are bitches, that?s why I?ma tell ya you better pull up your britches
?Ca! use all that cash is making your ass drag
From the boyfriend ya ganked and that?s pretty bad
I mean that?s pretty sad when ya dating a Black guy
And then you turn around a @#%$ another big, Black guy
Now that?s pretty wrong, but you?re just ganking
But that?s okay because you need a @#%$ spanking
From me, the funky Eminem
I?m busting rhymes and I?m swallowing phlegm
I?m busting a freestyle just like this
I say swallowing phlegm and Howard gets pissed
But when Howard gets pissed that?s okay
Because he leaves and he doesn?t show up for two more days
So I?ll just worry about that problem when I come to it
I cross that bridge when I come to it
Because, I forgot the chorus
But that?s okay ?cause y?all saying bust a rhyme for us
So I?ma bust another rhyme about this Black girl
She turned out to be a @#%$ wack girl
A wack girl, because Black girls ain?t funny
All they want is your @#%$ money
They take you for everything you got
And then you stand with a bunch of snot in your hand
So I?ma kick it to you just like this
How does the chorus go, I forgot
But that?s okay, ?cause I?ma tell you in stride
I?ma say oh foolish pride
Oh foolish pride, oh, oh, oh, oh foolish pride
oh, oh, oh, oh foolish pride; oh, oh, oh, oh foolish pride
oh, oh, oh, oh foolish pride; oh, oh, oh, oh foolish pride
oh, oh, oh, oh foolish pride; oh, oh, oh
Date a white girl, ?cause they got the raw hide

this shit is ridiculous...i saw it on the news last night.
the source is mad at something to do with eminem...they think they can end his career by saying his lyrics are not morally correct....or something...
no shit! everyone already knows this.
his comments are racist, sterotypical, homophobic, sexist, etc...
eminem is a fuckin psycho...the source is a joke too.
i think he is raising a non-issue which will cause alot of fighting between blacks and whites and lose some steps in the long ass fight known as racially equality among all people because of his "personal beef". (him, being the source cats)
yeah.

Comments anyone?
Granted it was old... and a weak azz rhyme... what are your thoughts?
Enquiring minds want to know... smile.gif
My thoughts are that I think that Em was overrated from the beginning (he reminds me of an old boyfriend), although biased by that fact alone, this latest scandal doesn't make me think any less of him than I already did...
I don't care for 50 Cent either... nor Ja Rule actually...
I like The Source but they really seem to be grasping at straws... they have a very strong dislike for the man...
I like Southern rap... gimmie some Lil Jon and I'm good to go... :D

Let's ask the same magazine to be fair and to list all the rap lyrics by black rappers that have expressed anti-white sentiment.

To be an effective liar, you've gotta have a good memory. Guess Em forgot about that freestyle session.
I'm just waiting for all the black people to come out and defend him. Ahhh...housecleaning is so refreshing.

Actually, being fairly familiar with his flow, the above rhyme seems like it's completely sarcastic to me. The Source is simply loooking for ammo, anything to discredit the guy that so loudly and irrevocably dissed them and wack-ass Benzino in the eyes and ears of the hip hop community.

1. the source is a garbage magazine that is great at instigating beefs that get people hurt and taking money for ads, thats about it.
2. benzino is mad at Eminem because Em dissed him in a song and benzino couldn't do anything about it because he's wack.
3. the source is DYING to have another hip-hop beef ending in some catastrophe because that means more units moved, the only difference in the past has been that the source could claim to be a third party bystander just reporting the news whereas now they're intigating it.
4. they're all gonna keep on till somebody else gets f****ed up.
5. eminem probably never expected to be some superstar with a globe full of people tryin to cop a tape from some bullshit show a decade ago, much less did he expect to be held accountable for the tirade by anyone besides the people in the room when it was said.
All in all, its a sad state of affairs and doesn't really bring anything new to light. It's like people digging up some random comment from Bush from 1984 where he said something stupid....
Eminem's offensive ?
Nu uhhhhh
get out
no way

Personally, knowing the level of skill and, more importantly, wit and sarcasm that Eminem posesses, I find it hard to believe that he wrote the following rhyme as a serious social comment:
Black! girls and white girls just don?t mix
Because Black girls are dumb and white girls are good chicks
White girls are good; I like white girls
I like white girls all over the world
White girls are fine and they blow my mind
And that?s why I?m here now telling you this rhyme
I'm sorry. It just doesn't add up. I know everybody wants to hate the guy. Go ahead. But I find it pretty hard to believe that this shit is expressing an honest opinion from him. I could be wrong, but looking at his body of work...

Anytime anybody with celebrity standing does anything wrong it should all be put into the same category.
The only comparisons that should ever be made is those that have to do with skin tone.

Sorry but you are really reaching. The shit was racist. </font>
no kidding it's racist.
I didn't say it wasn't racist.
I'm putting forth the possibiility that it was done sarcastically . To me, the wack-ass rhyme style gives it away.

Taking NO POSITION in the face of destructive intent is the same as taking a position, Julian. Honestly, I thought that there was no need among the folks at DHP to point out that those lyrics are clearly racist. I would assume that we're all on the same page regarding what those words are saying. Does being white means that I have to make an extra statement clearly outlining my agreement with those that are offended? Perhaps I give people too much credit. My mistake, no doubt.
Next time I'll preface any comment on race with a clear statement regarding my contempt for racist content. If that's what it takes... I thought we were well past that.
I was never trying to excuse those lyrics under some banner of freedom of belief. I am surprised that people have interpreted my comments as such (especially you) becuz I think I've been pretty clear.
I agree that those lyrics are open to full scrutiny. Scrutiny, however, goes both ways.
I was trying, clearly unsuccessfully, to raise the possibility of context given the history of Eminem as a lyricist. I raised this idea becuz I think it may be valid. I think he has shown a clear pattern of sarcasm and shock value that is relevant to this discussion.
Next time, I guess I will try to choose my words even more carefully than I already do, as I do not want to be red-stamped as a racist for introducing an idea in to a discussion which goes against the tide.

I agree that those lyrics are open to dull scrutiny.
</font>
Julian haven't you learned that it doesn't really matter what you are saying.. People can talk about him all they want by giving him publicity and the staying power he created. In 20 years what will truly be remembered? Black Eyed Peas? No. He will go down in history with Biggie and Tupac no matter what you, this messageboard, or any other board thinks.
Anyone who can stand out from the crowd lasts.
Why do Ron and Larry keep getting mentioned again and again and again and again?
Because they had talent, stood out from the sheep, and connected with people.
If he really is a racist then fuck him and boycott the motherfucker bottom line.

Eminem should be fist-fucked by the editors of Ms. and Essence Magazines then forced to clean their offices wearing a neon french maid uniform with no cleaning supplies except his own spit and rank doo-rag.
Then fired with no pay and escorted from the premises.

Sexism and racism in hip-hop?!?!? OOooooo. Fucking shocking!
Had he said "white girl" would it have been okay? It would still be racist.
People getting worked up about this is bullshit. Just like white people are fucking stupid for trying, convicting and sentencing Mike Tyson, O.J. and Kobe with no evidence, black people should be careful about doing the same to Em. Why are people so eager to take down people from other races?
By the way. . .statuatory RAPE, and a dusty tape with some questionable hip-hop lyrics ARE NOT comparable.

Not in any way defending Em, but "The Source" has not been very credible to most Hip Hop heads since the first incident with the Almighty RSO. The RSO was a group that Mr. Mays was managing at the time and fired a bunch of writers that wouldn't write a good review about one of their albums. Benzino was also a part of the group.
http://www.daveyd.com/fnvcom40critics.html
Here the Lost Boyz are referring to the recent rumblings that have come out of the Source camp where their most recent editor Selwyn Seyfu Hinds vacated his post after publisher/owner Dave Mays went behind the back of his editorial staff and changed the low ratings given to 'his group/friends' Made Men to a higher one. A widely circulated industry letter was released a couple of weeks ago explaining this incident in great detail. Hip Hop deejays were being encouraged to boycott the magazine. For many, the whole incident brought back unpleasant memories of what went down at The Source a few years ago when many from their original staff broke camp after Mays was accused of subverting his editorial staff by slipping in a favorable article about the same group. It's ironic that a similar incident would occur. To date there was another letter that's been circulating explaining that Seyfu Hinds had taken a job with an on line publication being put together by Russell Simmons, however Source publisher Dave Mays asserts that the info is not totally correct and that while it's true Hinds is stepping down as editor and chief he will remain on staff to help put together the December '99 issue.

For homework tonight.....
Would anyone care to investigate Ray Benzino's body of work with the Almight Rso back in 1993? Surely before his many character metamorphisis (sp?) under the umbrella of ABJECT WACKNESS, back in the projects of Boston, I'm pretty sure that he laced his rhymes with same bitches and hoes that he willfully wants to expose Em for, while longing for the experience to bang a coulpa white chicks to so he can add that to the rhyme book under the subject, uh, "bitches and hoes".
I'm fairly certain that they ,i.e. Ray and his crew, weren't rhyming about pooling our resources and building schools n' shit.
More importantly, for all the hip hop purists, why involve yourselves in a discussion about two cats that wouldn't be considered hip hop anyway?

America`s THE SOURCE magazine played a tape of the tracks they claim were recorded in 1993 when Eminem was 21 at a press conference in New York yesterday (18NOV03).
In them, Eminem raps about a bad experience with a black girlfriend and warns of the dangers of dating black women, "Blacks and whites they sometimes mix / but black girls only want your money cause they`re dumb chicks.
He continued, "Don`t date a black girl / if you do it once you won`t do it twice.
"Black girls are dumb, and white girls are good chicks."
Eminem, 31, quickly issued a statement following the revelations, admitting he was responsible for the tracks, but defending his actions as immature "stupidity", claiming they were recorded when he was a teenager.
The statement reads, "The tape they played today was something I made out of anger, stupidity and frustration when I was a teenager.
"I`d just broken up with my girlfriend, who was African-American, and I reacted like the angry, stupid kid I was. I hope people will take it for the foolishness that it was, not for what somebody is trying to make it into today."

My guess is that the average Eminem fan is a white male anyhow, so I don't think it'll erode his popularity one bit. Those at Interscope and Imagine Entertainment are experiencing some serious cash from him, so nothing's happening there either.
Michael Jackson is receiving an arrest warrant only AFTER he's considered "broke". See Em after his album sales slip and maybe then he'll have to provide a deeper "explanation".
Funny - where are the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jackson's now? Waiting for the premiere of Barbershop 2 maybe?

When I was younger, I attempted to get caught up in all the "white devil" this and that in the late 80's/early 90's. There was a lot of Hip Hop that dropped "science" and "mathematics" about "the grafted man" and "the 5 %" and whatever.
Funny - at night, you sit at a "mosque" and hear 'white devil' this and 'original man' that, but then the cool "white" people at work share their lunch with you when you're out of money. Your boss begins to help you with college tuition...and she's white. Your neighbor helps you watch your kids when you're late getting out of class...and he's white...then all sorts of theories break down...all sorts of levels of "LOGIC" that were sooooo fuckin' clear when the strong brova with the bow-tie or the turban and jalabiya dropped it so clearly TOTALLY ERODE.
If someone gave me a budget to make a film when I was 18 years old and playing "Welcome to the Terrordome" in my headphones 24 hours per day, who knows what kind of racist drivel I may have come up with. Ways I thought, things I said, levels of influence I applied to people in my circle of friends - it is so far removed from everything I understand NOW...but I still have to own it.
If this Eminem thing doesn't make a peep, it's because his fan base is, as many suspect, nearly all white American. If it causes a roar, it will be because people of many different races feel betrayed.
If betrayal is the rule, I hope he approaches it assertively. Americans don't require any more division than the current political climate already maintains. :(

Eminem is a white man, using a "black" artform to sell it to whites and blacks... Nothing different from Elvis, Fred Durst, Bubba Sparxx, so on and so forth... I have more of a problem with black artists who say degrading things about black women who don't own up to it... I give EMINEM credit for issuing a statement explaining the reason behind the song. And I can see him venting his frustration this way... This is his M.O...
Nothing out of the ordinary that we haven't seen from him in the past... What about black artists who do the same thing and don't try to make amends? Look at R. Kelly? He is hotter than ever... But denies his participation in the tape... Michael Jackson... Innocent til proven guilty... Tupac was convicted of rape??? He is damn martyr now... Mystical? What so called black leader actually stand up and saying about EMINEM with out first acknowledging other artists who have made worse songs...? Not Jesse Jackson!!!

I trip about this whole situation.
I remember when N.W.A First came out, it was a big mess about there lyrics de-grading Black Woman and Culture, yet hardly no-one (who was black) never said a word about that. Most Brothers and Sisters was saying"Ohh, thats how it is in the Hood", "We live in the Ghetto!" But to my understanding, the world is a Ghetto!
So now Em's cd came out, but he said the same thing that everyone else been saying for year's. Ohh my, I forgot...he's white! And, whats your point about that?
Black on Black racial tones has been going on since day one, sad but true.
Now people are saying that Em Shouldnt have said what he said, but for the past 15 yrs we as blacks has been calling one-another hoes and bitches, nigger, my nigger, or that classic "thats my nigger!"
I think that our black leaders, past and present, has Faught long and hard for us to be known as blacks and to be rocognize as Americans. But along the way "Nigger" became a part of every day life.

Eminem may be inducted as an honarary (sp?) member of the British National Party or the Cluck Cluck Klan.
I've never bought his music... Dre or no Dre.

She wrote a fine article called:
Sexism and Misogyny: Who Takes The Rap?
Misogyny, gangsta rap, and The Piano
it can be found on the web... i would post a link but i don't know how...
she has an interesting take... it was written in 1994... still relevant...

Eminem Says Tape Was Made As A Frustrated Teen
By Big Dee Irwin
Date: 11/19/2003 12:00 PM
At a press conference in New York yesterday, The Source Magazine unveiled a tape recording of Eminem freestyling, using racial slurs against African-Americans.
The tape, which features a young Eminem rhyming over a beatbox and primitive drum machine, was recorded around 1993 according to a press release issued by the magazine.
On the tape Eminem says: All the girls I like to bone have big butts/ No they don't, 'cause I don't like that n*gger sh*t/ I'm just here to make a bigger hit/
Later on Eminem raps about a girlfriend he broke up with: I’lll get straight to the point/Black girls are b*tches, that’s why I’ma tell ya you better pull up your britches/Cause all that cash is making your ass drag from the boyfriend ya ganked and that’s pretty bad/I mean that’s pretty sad when ya dating a Black guy/And then you turn around a f*ck another big, Black guy now that’s pretty wrong, but you’re just ganking/But that’s okay because you need a godd*mn spanking/From me, the funky Eminem
"Don't make this right now a double standard," Benzino said. "We gotta treat this the same way you treat Mike Tyson, like you treat Kobe Bryant, like you treat R. Kelly, like you treat O.J. Simpson."
Eminem has accused The Source founder Dave Mays and his partner, Raymond “Benzino” Scott of pursuing a vendetta against him and the artists on his Shady Records, which include 50 Cent and G-Unit.
“Ray Benzino, Dave Mays and The Source have had a vendetta against me, Shady Records and our artists for a long time," Eminem said in a statement. "The tape they played today was something I made out of anger, stupidity and frustration when I was a teenager. I'd just broken up with my girlfriend, who was African-American, and I reacted like the angry, stupid kid I was. I hope people will take it for the foolishness that it was, not for what somebody is trying to make it into today."
Mays and Scott promised to continue pursue the issue, saying a CD of the recordings would be contained in their February issue.

Don't write it off as YOUTHFUL IGNORANCE because the youthful ignorance EXCUSE doesn't keep black and latino males in America out of prisons.
With FAME comes SCRUTINY. I don't care what he does - goes on BET with Farrakhan, cries with Barbara Walters, but he has to own that shit and not have his PR firm spin it.

There is no excuse for what he said. Stop trying to spin it. I can call my brother a nigga all I want(400 years of mental and physical enslavement has conditioned us to use the word) but If a white calls him that it's on. I was watching an episode of Oprah once and they were talking about racism. A soccer mom in the audience got up and asked the question; "If blacks call each other nigger why is it that whites can not?". Oprahs response was "why would you want to call a black person a nigger?". I can't break it down more simply than that. It's all about the intent behind it's use.

Pat - Eminem wasn't referring to "niggaz". He was referring to "BLACK GIRLS".
It wasn't some street element shit. It was very articulately worded mysognystic and racist sentiment.
And don't put words in my mouth. A search on my member number will expose how I feel about black on black anything. The association you're making about how blacks regard blacks has no bearing on Eminem's obvious blunder.

Eminem always spoke about how he would never say the word "nigga"...but he allows artists to guest on his albums who say it, produces artists who say it, rhymes alongside rappers who use it...on the same tune.
Many blacks were waiting on the "other shoe" to drop.
What? Eminem didn't remember the tape?
BULLSHIT - he lied awake at night wondering if it would ever get out...and his enemies got ahold of it...that's the way the game goes...

I don't agree with that... When I was growing up I never heard that word unless my Grandmother, Grandfather or Mother were mad at someone... We were conditioned to be slaves too. I am sure no one on DHP has ever picked cotton. We were also conditioned to remain ignorant and uneducated... I really don't buy, "400 years of slavery has done this or that..." If that was case we would not a be where we are today or where we could be tomorrow...

And, whats your point about that?
Over 400 years of calling us niggers and you have to ask this question? graemlins/jpshakehead.gif </font>
First off, we as Blacks cant get over our own Black on Black Racial tones.
Now everyone wants to jump on EM because he said basicly the same thing as most hip-hop artist out there said?
If we cant be more than "thats my nigga" to one another, how do you expect the world to see us as???
Its gets to the point that even young white kids are calling themselves niggas, or thats my nigga.
400 years, and we've contribute to the continuation of that word.

THIS SHIT MAKES ZERO SENSE!
What is this? Some "CHICKEN'S COME HOME TO ROOST" bullshit? The "CHICKEN'S" in this case DO NOT BELONG TO BLACK PEOPLE!
Hip Hop was once a positive affair, that was meant to rock the party, make people feel good and, at some level, OPEN YOUNG MINDS of ALL RACES.
Then the INTERSCOPES started financing the shit you point the finger at. GANGSTA/THUG RAP is everywhere because SOMEONE OTHER THAN BLACKS financed and distributed it.

The Blood of the Negro has been spilled by the Negro for years now.
Tell me, would you Boycott 2-short?
How about Eazy E (rip)?
What about the liquor store on every corner in the black Neighborhood that blacks keep feeding?
It has nothing to do with speaking out when Black on Black blood has been Spilled, "then it's time to speak out"!
I wonder if a Black artist said such statements what would you do? But it isnt, it's Em. Doing the same thing that other So-Called Black artist been doing.."Getting Paid"!
Like I said, seems as if we as Black have a problem with Bitches and Niggers is when someone outside our race says it, thats where the problem is. But if one of our own speak the same tongue as Em said, then its a mute Issue!
Equality for all, is what our Black leaders Faught hard for. As a Black man such as myself, could you have the same Equality of Criticsm for another Black man, Black man song that Degrade woman, or does this only applies for someone out our race?

If nobody wanted to hear the "n" shit then they wouldn't press it but people like Eargasm that believe it's "a black thing" assists for the "n" word to be socially accepted by some. The problem is that 70% off the people in the U.S. are white and if a gang of artists are coming out saying "n" this and that..eventually whites are going to say..."well if they can say it, so can I."
There are new generations being born that don't care about the Martin Luthers, slavery, Malcolms, Garveys, etc. but if we have this attitude concerning "n" being socially accepted, it's doing more damage than good because they'll take that word and run with it.

INTERSCOPE is EMINEM'S RECORD LABEL...
INTERSCOPE has been responsible for almost the lion's share of the MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT that INFLUENCES urban youth to the GANGSTA/THUG lifestyle and behaviors...
INTERSCOPE is now VULNERABLE because their FLAGSHIP STAR...
...EMINEM...
...has been EXPOSED...
INTERSCOPE distributes 50 CENT, G-UNIT, EMINEM, 2-PAC, DEATH ROW SHIT...anonanonanonanonanon...
Must I continue...?!
Now if you're black, and you care about black youth, and you have determined that the music black youth listens to is DESTRUCTIVE to the black community...
NOW'S YOUR FUCKING CHANCE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!
If you don't give a fuck, feel free to come up with statements like Jimmymack-2000, Tavis Smiley and others.

one COULD argue that eminem said those words not because he's a card carrying member of the klan who's spitting in the face of black america on purpose, but because his social circles during his upbringing brainwashed him into thinking the terms were sufficient adjectives to be used when describing people.
I don't know the man, don't know shit about him or where he grew up and don't care. I'm not trying to defend his wack shit and agree that in the end, he just needs to man up and bear the brunt of his shallow ass words.

I count three references by Eminem to his own "stupidity" and "foolishness"--an explicit admission of wrongdoing if ever I've seen one.
As an earlier poster asked, how shall he atone for his sins? Leave the game altogether?

I think you might have missed this.

Point the finger in the right direction next time! </font>
TO add to Blue...it's all about supply and demand.
There are new generations being born that don't care about the Martin Luthers, slavery, Malcolms, Garveys, etc. but if we have this attitude concerning "n" being socially accepted, it's doing more damage than good because they'll take that word and run with it.
my two cents.
I hear where you're coming from Blue and Danny you are the Chuck D. of DHP.
graemlins/thumbsup.gif </font>
I said I understood the use of the word nigger by other blacks. I never said it was acceptable. The only person I call nigger is my brother and it's done as a joke. Your assertion that white people use the word nigger cause they hear it in rap music is absurd. They used it during slavery. They used it during Jim Crow. And they use it today rap music or no. Very stupid response bro.

This is one of the best documentaries about the West Coast rap game ever. Everyone who wants to talk shit in this thread should watch it. Shit - I might send it to Gman to have him put it on the page.
Y'all know trivia. Some of us know the industry. This could really be a spark for shit to get better. Problem is, someone VISIBLE has to make it happen. Dre, Em, 50 - one of them has to do it.

In the late 80's I started gaining knowledge
of self. The Malcolm X version of things appealed
more to me than the MLK version. From there,
I learn about The Black Panthers, The 5 Percent
Nation, etc.
In 1989, 1990, 1991 I'm calling the white man
the devil; I'm holding "militant" thoughts; I'm
reading "militant" poetry.
14 years later, do I still think the "White man
is the devil"? No. I have learned, moved on, added
and subtracted.
If someone dug up old footage of me, or published my journal writings during this time,
you would find a difference between the Saadir
of then and the Saadir of now.
All bullshit aside, if Em said this 10 YEARS AGO,
then he said it 10 YEARS AGO!
What matters is: Does he still feel this way NOW.

HHSAN Supports Eminem
By Nolan Strong
Date: 11/20/2003 1:49 pm
Russell Simmons' Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HHSAN) has released a statement revealing its position on controversial lyrics Eminem wrote about African-Americans in a rap recited in 1993.
The tape was released to the media at a press conference in New York City on Wednesday, by Source founder Dave Mays and his partner, Raymond "Benzino" Scott.
On the 10-year-old tape, Eminem raps about an ex-girlfriend, who happened to be African-American and also makes disparaging comments about African-American women in general. In addition, the rapper used the “N-word” as well in a lyric referring to Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back.”
"These lyrics are disgusting, but the oneness of hip-hop culture has transformed many young people in trailer parks around the country away from their parents¹ old mindset of white supremacy," Russell Simmons said. "We believe Eminem's apology is sincere and forthright. He continues not only to be an icon of hip-hop, but also has evolved into a good soldier who gives back money, time and energy to the community, encouraging this generation of youth to reach their highest aspirations."
This past April, the HHSAN honored Eminem at their Detroit Summit. The Detroit native was granted the National Outstanding Achievement Award for his charity work and hands-on support of youth nationwide.
Dr. Benjamin Chavis, President of HHSAN, said that the race card is often used to divide the hip-hop culture.
"Hip-hop culture transcends race," Chavis noted. "We, therefore, must be careful as to how the race card is played to divide people rather than to encourage unity in the struggle for freedom, justice and equality for all."
The support of Simmons' non-profit organization comes on the heels of Eminem apologizing for the remarks, saying they were made out of anger and frustration.
Mays and Scott said they plan to issue a recording of the CD in each copy of the February issue of The Source.
Eminem has accused the magazine of having a "personal vendetta" against him and the artists associated with him.
The Source has refused to take the raps as “foolishness,” as Eminem put it in a retort. "These are racist remarks by someone who has the ability to influence millions of minds," said editor-in-chief Kim Osorio to New York Newsday.
The tape is the latest in a series of insults hurled at each other, which includes diss records from both sides, The Source printing articles and posters aimed at discrediting Eminem and Eminem smashing his Source Award to pieces this year at Hot 97's Summer Jam concert.

Just trying to catch up on this thread.
Clearly my theory was wrong. Oh well...
I'm not sure in what capacity Eminem could open up some new dialgue about race other than make a track about it. Maybe he will.
Funny reading about people's state of mind back in the late 80s. I've been packing up my apartment this week cuz I'm moving on Sunday. Been going through boxes and crates of old shit - found my "Malcom X - No Sell Out" t-shirt, my 40Acres & A Mule shirt with the big American Flag X. My "Bed-Stuy Do Or Die" baseball cap. A whole crate of African beads / medallions / kente wraps / rasta hats. I was like the Mr. T of African beads back in the day. Y'all don't even know...

I guarantee you that since he blew up, he's been waking up in the middle of the night wondering if that tape would resurface.

does eminem have the profile/stoop high enough to say "change"? - of course
to a certain extent for him to do so, and say "i'm atoning for my sins about racism" really hurts his credibility, considering the artists he's signed, etc. etc. am i saying he is racist, or promoting racism? no more than any other rapper signed on his or other labels.
but for eminem to say something, it's like you're calling for a white guy to be the savior of this issue, which is bunk. it comes from all four corners working toward it.
but on a certain level it takes personal ownership. white suburban kids are not the only people that buy cd's.
and people buy what they want to hear. which i guess means everyone wants to hear about bitches and ho's and live the dream, seperate but equal everywhere but in our consumerism and the letter of the law.
for a white kid, knowing that a black kid is down with any of "those" lyrics says passively that black people are down with those lyrics because they do not complain en mass. so if black people see themselves this way, this must be how they want to be seen, which makes it ok for me to see them this way...etc...etc...etc. personal grassroots ownership of ones community says alot, and without it those that complain end up looking like annoying whiners. not everything is top down, and the stronger buildings i've seen have been built from the ground up.
just looking at another side.
this discussion is interesting.

but why top down? why do "they" need to be the ones to "pick up the ball"?
are we really such sheep?
why not something more effective than a "just sell me a different myth, one i want to believe" boycott?
why not education, discussion, etc. etc. everything that comes from the top must be said in 15-30 seconds as a news clip. that's not discussion, education, learning, evolution... that's marketing...and it always will be.

Everything requires a BEGINNING, gabriel.
*off topic*
When I was eleven I used to dance with this one kid Adis (one of only three black kids in my 6th grade) and we would practice moves from rap videos. We wore matching polka dot shirts and cross colors and shopped at merry go round. We had routines we would do at the school dances.
One day I turned to my dad and said "Dad, I wish I was black".
I guess I was really drawn to something so different than me, both in music and in the friend I had at school. I wore this shirt that said "racism hurts everybody" religiously.
138's post made me think of this. heh.

i understand that, but the very nature of your argument wants to push off the responsability of picking up the start gun on someone else.
Interesting reading ... Came upon this article. I hope I'm not reposting it in the thread. I know it doesn't touch directly on the Eminem issue but I find Talib's responses interesting 'cause they parallel many sentiments expressed in the House is dead threads.
http://www.daveyd.com/interviewtalibkweliaol.html
Davey D Okay. This is from, uh, Cupid, uh, 1279 and EbonyPrincess04, uh, “I feel there has been an emergence of hip hop which is predominantly R&B-based. While I believe most of this is a marketing tool by record companies to tone down hip hop and deliver it to a wider range of audience, i.e., white people, I feel that it’s taking hip hop away from the original raw form that it was originally based on. Do you believe that this will be the demise of hip hop, as a whole, and what do you feel is the future of hip hop?”
Talib: The corporations don’t have the power to kill the hip hop. The people are the power to kill hip hop. What I’m noticing as I go from city to city, people at, when on tour with Common and Gang Star, audiences are frustrated. They’re very frustrated with the hip hop music they’re hearing. They come to the shows. They got T-shirts that say, “Hip Hop Is Dead,” and, you know, they really just, they, they talk to me and they ask me questions like, “What do you think about how stagnant the state of hip hop is?” I don’t feel like that. I don’t feel like it is stagnant at all. Now, the problem is, is people are allowing the corporations to decide what hip hop is and not taking it control.
Since when has any record company or any media outlet decided what’s real hip hop and what’s not? If you were judging it, based on what you hear on the radio, you already lost and that’s what it is. Since when has the radio been the vanguard or the standard for what hip hop is? It never was. So why are you givin’ ‘em so much props? That question, with respect to the sister, is giving the radio and the corporations, and the media way too much props. You’re allowing - you’re taking the control - you have the control. Go buy, you go buy a Dead Prez, turn-off- the radio CD everytime you see it, if you can afford it. You know what I’m saying? Make sure you buy the tickets for this show.
Make sure you give it out to your friends as Christmas presents, you know what I’m saying? Make sure that you talk about that in your school. If everybody do that, you take the control for the music back. Do not allow the radio to say this is your station for hip hop and R&B and they’re not playing nothing you can relate to, you know? The control is with the people, I’m not like, I’m not a fan of boycotting the radio stations either. I think, I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do. Someone wants me to do that, I’ll sign a paper. I’m down with it, whatever, but I think, we should start our own radio stations, or make our own albums or, or, or make our own concerts or create a culture the same way you started, you know?

I count three references by Eminem to his own "stupidity" and "foolishness"--an explicit admission of wrongdoing if ever I've seen one.

This page had Em pegged before this story came up. Just like whites did OJ before any evidence. Same shit, different day.
BTW—If we did in-depth thorough research into anyone's life (which the media has done to him), we'd find all of us guilty for saying some stupid shit once. Fortunately, none of us were MCs, keeping taped records.
I don't excuse what he said, which was really cruel and ignorant, but I think this is a non-issue.
I spent the day at London's protest today, with my 80-year-old grandparents, hearing about murdered Iraqi children, seeing the frustration of a world where politicians ignore their people, getting updates on dead Britons in Istanbul.

I know you guys are tired of me bumping this ain't cha? :D it's friday got d@mn it!!!
BENZINO AN 'NEM BUST EM AGAIN: Rapper sinks further in "racially" offensive lyrics allegations.
Eminem
(Nov. 21, 2003) Eminem has a few folks literally wondering who’s the real slim shady these days with the latest allegations that he performed racist lyrics in his career.
The Source Magazine earlier this week revealed a tape of the rapper spewing racial slurs targeted against black people and particularly black women.
The magazine is crowing that they've now confirmed the recording date of the unnamed Eminem track to be 1993; the actual Maxell tape containing the track was manufactured in Japan in October 1992. The recording was made direct-to-tape; thus it would have been impossible to have been made in 1988, as Eminem has claimed. The recording date of the tape clearly Eminem’s claim of being a teenager. He would have been 21 at the time of the recording.
In a statement issued by Eminem on Tuesday night when The Source aired this tape publicly for the first time, Eminem said, “The tape they played today was something I made out of anger, stupidity and frustration when I was a teenager.”
But an un-relenting Ray Benzino had an immediate retort for Eminem saying, “Eminem lied on Tuesday. He was 21-years-old when he recorded this track. At 21, you’re old enough to drink, to vote, to serve your country. You’re also old enough to take responsibility for your words. Eminem needs to apologize to the Black community and, particularly, Black women for these offensive lyrics.”
Lyrics and an audio track are available at www.thesource.com (http://www.thesource.com)

I wonder would HE be willing to apologize to black women/ community for some of his content.
Seems to me, Em must have matured in some form/ fashion 'cause he didn't have to call Benzino a nigger to dis him.
We often talk about INTENT here, so I question this cat's SINCERITY, as if he is so fuckin concerned about black people....
