A veteran dj with a career spanning more than 25 years, Uchikawa Masahiko is hardly a stranger to soul music. Working consistently to establish the club scene in Japan from the late 80s to the 90s, he has been a dj at all the major clubs in east and west Japan; Mix, 328, Catalist, Fai and others in Tokyo, Qoo, Grand Café, Under Lounge, Down Flatt and several others in Osaka and Kyoto. Uchikawa’s deep and soulful style and his music selection and mixing style is well respected by artists all over Japan and abroad.
DJ Uchikawa is also known for his enormous record collection. United Kingdom’s “Godfather of rare groove”, Norman Jay MBE, dubbed him as the “Japanese Jay”. Outside Japan, Uchikawa has performed with Tony Humphries, Roger Sanchez, Ken Carpenter, Victor Rosado and countless others. Recently, he has worked with Osunlade, Rap Saunders, Frankie Valentine, DJ Spinna, Glenn Underground, Karizma, Joe Claussell, Theo Parish, Atjazz and others.
The year 1998 produced Rhythm of Elements; a collaboration between Masahiko Uchikawa and pianist Makoto Kuriya. Their works have been released on major European and Japanese record labels (Black Vinyl, Future Vision, Loop Sounds, R2 Records and Jet Set Records.
In 2000, Uchikawa decided to branch out into production and limited his club appearances, to spin at his own club; The Loft in Ueda/Nagano. Rhythm of Elements is recognized as Japan’s premiere deep house unit and their productions are noted worldwide. Inspired by these developments, DJ Uchikawa started his own label; Loft Music, which initiated his “LoftSoul ’’.
Uchikawa is currently touring, making appearances in Chicago, Detroit and other cities in the United States. Mariposa Morena and Rhythm Productions presents for your enjoyment, The LoftSoul Experience, an intimate listening session, featuring DJ Uchikawa, at the Silver Room.
