View Full Version : Anyone like Depeche Mode .........??
Just wondering if anyone else likes Depeche Mode?
I like their earlier stuff, the more electronic stuff. Depeche Mode 101 brings back crazy, but very fond highschool memories.

I used to love Depeche,
but Music fo the Masses was later than 82-86, more like 87-88.
Looking back at their music now, it does sound a bit cheesy, like "Just can't get enough" and all the stuff from their first couple albums. But, it gets more serious and more innovative later. Violator was the shit, back when it first came out, and Songs of Faith and Devotion was an amazing transformation into to spiritual rock, and is definitely my favorite DM album. Ultra was not bad, but the last one was a little off.

In all seriousness, I never understood Depeche Mode. I just didn't get it. I like one song, and that's, "It Doesn't Matter," and the main reason I like it is because it's simple, and my friends who were all Depeche fans, would listen to it constantly. Especially when we all would eat a couple of tabs, get in a circle and hug each other. Oh, I thought of one more song, I honestly like, "Enjoy The Silence." That's a really good song. It has depth.
I prefer Yaz/Alison Moyet/Erasure. I'd also say The Pet Shop Boys, but they are in a totally diferent league.

I always loved DM from Speak and Spell to Violator. The song that always got me was "Blasphemous Rumors". The most heart wrenching song of all time. It is wierd that someone mentioned Erasure. Vince Clark performed keyboards for DM on Speak and Spell before forming Yaz and then Erasure. Good call. Peace.

I always thought he was gay too, but I was told he's married and lives in Santa Barbara. A friend of mine got to go backstage at one of the concerts and according to him, Martin was sandwiched by two hot women. I don't know though...
But yeah, I'm a big DM fan. I know it's cheesy, but "Somebody" probably had the most impact on me in high school. I liked almost anything that would make a depressed teenager even more depressed. This includes The Smiths, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, New Order, OMD, Bauhaus, Yazoo, etc.
I do like a lot of the brighter, less heavy stuff too. Book of Love brings back memories of high school at Lane Tech. Basically anything produced by Flood and released on Sire was hot.

They were okayish, not really out there with New Order, but definitely above the Pet Shop Boys, no way near Human League really..
It's hard being British, the Mode were not bad but not the greatest, I know the US got hold of them in a big way.
I prefered New Order, Human League, Colour Box and early OMD (Dazzle Ships LP).
The Mode were always on Top of the Pops (BBC style MTV) and were always etched into the pencil-cases of girls.
There was much better stuff and the Mode were always in the US trying to cut it

I must admit I was a big fan, and before "Violator" came out, "Music for the Masses" was my favourite album but this, I thought was really a great change of sound for them [Thanks to Mr. Kevorkian smile.gif ], really moody stuff and a great influence for me!!!

i loved DM as a teen, although i pretty much stopped following their work beyond 'Music for the Masses', which is about the same time that i moved from Kenya to Germany (1987). i don't know what put me off, but it was probably that whole 'depressed' and 'dark' imagery that i suddenly encountered here. nevertheless, although they never had quite the grip on me that Human League, Heaven 17, The Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, Tears For Fears, Split Enz, Simple Minds and - by far - the Smiths had, early DM is right up there for me. mind you, that whole era was the formative phase for me - to this day i personally feel that the type of songwriting that came out of the UK(*) in early and mid 80's has never been equalled.
20 years after the fact you still have a surprisingly large community of teenagers running around today looking like Robert Smith, and i find myself enjoying watching them do their thing B/C everybody else is trying to be Eminem LOL. German youth, to this date, yields an unwavering DM fanbase, and DM always seem to enjoy themselves especially, when they come to perform here.
here's one of their greatest - a song has never been as apt and on point as it is today.
peace. ngeso.

People are people so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
So we're different colours
And we're different creeds
And different people have different needs
It's obvious you hate me
Though I've done nothing wrong
I never even met you
So what could I have done
I can't understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand
People are people so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
Help me understand
Now you're punching and you're kicking
And you're shouting at me
I'm relying on your common decency
So far it hasn't surfaced
But I'm sure it exists
It just takes a while to travel
From your head to your fist
I can't understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand

MATHIUS: Can you really put Depeche Mode on a higher tier than The Pet Shop Boys, I mean, really. Neil Tennant's wordplay is infinitely more complex and acerbic than David "The Man Who Can't Even Kill Himself" Gahan, and Chris Lowe's mastery of the synthesizer and production standards put Martin Bore's to shame.

anything box and guidos...jersey represent! smokin.gif
lyrics that popped into my head while reading this thread:
i'm taking a ride with my best friend
i hope he never let's me down again...
he knows where he's taking me
taking me where i want to be...
my little girl, drive anywhere
do what you want, i don't caaare
tonight, i'm in the hands of fate
i hand myself, over on a plate...now
let's have a black celebration, black celebration
tonight
to celebrate the fact that we've seen the back of another black, daaaaaaaaay...
and the song that if you played on the piano would make the girls swoon:
i want somebody to share, share the rest of my life, share my inner most thoughts know my intimate details... graemlins/mecry.gif
well anyway, sorry about the serenade, got lost in the moment. just glad david gahn wasn't successful in offing himself like michael hutchence (this is what you need! i'll give you what you need!). or did hutchence really just die of self-asphyxiation?
