Hey, he's doing him... who am I to judge him for it ?
On a music note.. is it just me or do all the little "sounds" sound like they aren't on a normal count or normal progression ?
Is it just that the patterns/progression isn't "normal" so it sounds weird to my ear or what ?
When there's a beat behind it, a lot of times it really sounds like two completely unrelated songs being forced to play at the same time, like a really bad mix....
Maybe I'm missing something but it just sounds "off" to me...
Anyone know some special "knowledge" about trance that might make me go "ohhhhhhhh, ok, I see" because its odd for me to think that many people hear that and think its normal sounding.
Peace
i kept on waiting for there to be a punch line but this is obviously real and insane. wow.

I notice the music is very dramatic and emotional sounding almost like Yanni with a drum machine. I can see the appeal.....as far as "dance music" now im not sure about that.

I could have fun to this..especially on a tab... ;)

Where did this kid come from, anyway?
I know he's Dutch. But I mean what did he do /where does he play on the reg to achieve this level of stardom?
I've only heard his name for like the last year or so.
Is he a huge Ibiza DJ or something?

WOW!!! Impressive!!!....maybe MAGUS has a point.... If you have to sell your soul, you won't ever make it that far. I truly believe that.
There are more Trance DJ's than house DJ's and there's still only a certain select few that make it to that level. I have to believe they are there because they believe in what they are doing just as much as I believe in what I am doing, you believe in what you are doing, Magus believed in what he is doing, etc etc etc.
You're only truly successful in life, both spiritually and financially if you are going at it like someone possessed and that ONLY comes from truly believing in it ... you can't fake that.

Is he a huge Ibiza DJ or something? it really doesn't matter, does it? Nelly was at the Super Bowl in atlanta giving out cds and getting laughed at one year and the very next year was the main performer on the stage at midfield at half time.....it's not the time and the dues paid as some would like it to be, hell, it's not even the talent, it's the drive, will, belief in ones self and the sacrifices one is willing to go through to achieve their goal.
Bigups to those going through it...even more bigups to those who have a goal to work towards.

Quite possibly he made more money on that one day than many people on this board have made in an entire year. That top 100 list has its place in terms of increasing your earning potential. Don't be so quick to judge inclusion or the list itself as a bad thing. I don't think anyone of the complainers on this board would bitch/complain/object to his or her own inclusion in that top 100 list. DON'T FRONT because in the end it comes down to one thing $$$!!!

the music he's playing is powerful (or should i say, is on a powerful system) but i would jump out of a window after listening for more than a minute. mad, crazy, techno, trance, breakbeat, progressive ups to him

I don't think he would be so popular if he was ugly. He is very marketable. He has a lot of star potential. I'm not hating at all. It is in reality, like everyone says, about $. It is about creating a stir in the market. Let's face it,Oakenfold is getting old(by ravers standerds) and had his time, this guy is going to take the newer, younger audience with the same recipe, but add a little more to it to kick it up a notch. Look at the production value that went into this just so a guy can play other peoples music. It was not about the music in this case,it was all about Tiesto, with the music in the background. Whoever is representing this guy,I want to hit the gym,get to my plastic surgen, give satan a call to draw up a contract for my soul, buy a few trance records and have a meeting with his agent. Someone is doing their job well. graemlins/respekt.gif Peace.

I need about twelve ibuprofen after hearing 30 seconds of that CRAP!
I have one question for all of you here on this board....
Where did OUR house music go wrong to not be playing there in that arena? Why is it that SHITTY ASS TRANCE is played like that and not OUR house music? When I play, I look like Tiesto, but with house on the decks.
Just in case you were wondering, that's not music....THAT'S NOISE!! I'd like to have a trance burning like people did for rock n' roll back in the day!!
I HATE THAT SHIT WITH A PASSION!!
Good for Tiesto and all those other cats for gettin paid like there's no tomorrow, but please get some phuckin taste.

Where did OUR house music go wrong to not be playing there in that arena? Why is it that SHITTY ASS TRANCE is played like that and not OUR house music? You actually asked TWO questions, but the answer is very simple. House music didn't go wrong. WE DID, or more correctly, those that enjoy our music and our scene being UNDERGROUND. Trance is just another spinoff, or subgenre (I hate labels) of house music, and Tiesto appeals to the MAINSTREAM, something the UNDERGROUND loathes with a passion. 21-25 year olds don't dig OUR music, and WE'RE doing nothing to change their minds. They think it's boring lounge music, and it some respects, they're right. The rawness that started it all is missing from OUR music, but still exists in alot of the electronic music MAINSTREAM clubbers listen and dance to. Why isn't Blaze and Amp Fiddler played at major sporting events?? Why don't pom-pom and dance squads perform to "Cerca De Mi" at football and basketball games?? Think about how ridiculous the last two questions sound. Everybody wants to be UNDERGROUND, yet MAINSTREAM at the same time. It ain't happening. We don't know what we want or how to get there, but we reserve the right to bitch about those that are doing their thing. We want to be #1 on a DJ list but nobody knows us. We detest ANYTHING commercial, but don't understand why our music fails to attract major labels anymore. We talk about PLUR (bullshit), and how our scene brings people of all races and backgrounds together, yet we hate EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY that's considered MAINSTREAM. House music never went wrong. House music became WACK as soon as WHITE PEOPLE began to enjoy it, just as hip hop is headed in the same direction. Commercial hip hop is WACK as soon as it crosses over to a WHITE audience. PLUR doesn't exist. Never did. Probably never will. Hypocrisy reigns supreme in the UNDERGROUND, and that's why things are so phucked up. Most people don't wan't to face the truth, which is difficult to do while running away from it. I have spoken........JMJ graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

I think there are still a bunch of house cuts that are very raw. Rawness is not the issue: Detroit techno is the ultimate form of raw funk and it's even less mainstream than house. So it's gotta be the melodic nature of trance that appeals to the mainstream--easy melodies that are easy to identify with.

i dont understand how this guy got to be #1 beyond it being marketing related.
i've seen sasha, and to tell you the truth he had the whole room locked on to a slow, badass, pumping and THICK groove. now, it was nothing like the sort of liftoff i've been given by certain house sets i've been witness to...but the set was still no joke.
listening to this vid though it's just fast, easy to be processed and that's about it. no real depth, just rahrahrahrahrahrah. so whatever.
"progressive" music aside, i agree with the basic sentiments of jmj. when i first read that question my thought was something along the lines of how people became too concerned with what "was house" and what "wasn't house" and that's a turn-off, period. i dont blame it being on white people though...it's too easy to pass the buck. and if it was white people's fault no one was listening to this music, then how come so many people are listening to the music being marketed by whites, etc?

I agree with JMJ's sentiment, but I think the basis premise is flawed... to say that the house 'scene' is not reaching that kind of commercial pinnacle because of any wrongdoing on behalf of those involved is simply not true.
this comes down to taste alone: our music will never reach the mainstream audience required to create obscene specticles like tiesto's circus... the regular punter that is looking for that instant 'energy' kick. it's simply that taste's differ and we should be celebrating this difference. what we'd term 'real' house music in all it's forms will never appeal to those who have no more than a passing recreational interest in music, thats f***ing great with me - you guys do your thing, we'll do ours and good luck to you!
it's really pointless to frustrate yourself over why we're not standing in a 30000+ arena. i for one am very glad not to be! i wonder how many of us would still be here if Kerri, Timmy and others were actually playing this type of circus, and our music was accepted by the mainstream??!?

Much respect to JMJ, a very serious and deadly accurate portrayal of what's happening to our music. Again though, my only criticism is the rawness debate; plenty of cuts of our music (much like the detroit stuff) is raw as.

mark I think what you just wrote in spot-on. I regularly expose friends and co-workers to the music we listen to and I can see how they attention time span is short because most of them don't spend as much time and energy with regards to music. They go out to clubs or bars and just dance to whatever is out there, purely recreational whereas for some of us, it's a life style.
I lent one of my CDs to a colleague, and she told me "if it's one of those songs that go on forever, forget about it", which shows right away the difference between those that want that instant kick in comparison to those that want to enjoy the track and get into it. The repetitive nature of our music really ticks of a lot of people, and we like it! I had read somewhere that repetitive beats calm down your cerebral nerves or something to that sort, I'm not expert in that field; perhaps a portion of music listeners don't listen to music to have a mind trip but want constant stimulation by a 3-minutes track that'll do the job.

listening to this vid though it's just fast, easy to be processed and that's about it. no real depth, just rahrahrahrahrahrah. so whatever.

all the typical deeep house responses I'm not feelin at all graemlins/puke.gif graemlins/puke.gif
i still fail 2 see the humor in fact I think it should be taken dead serious
(not in a hate on way/but lets face it in areal plan action way)
1 where and how far dance music can go
(do we agree we are still apart of dance music?)
2 its appeal and power in the market place
as we've been thru many a time some buisness sense and money wouldn't hurt any of our artist/lables/producers/djs we claim 2 love
so much
this says we really don't have 2 imagine it
it can happen how I don't know
but there s a team who made this guy work
can't be but so impossible.......

Just talking in terms of the records this is playing, how much SOUL is within? let me ask. We all love to listen to soul music don't we? Thats what I think. I don't care what this guy earns, I don't care how many kids pile in and pay through the nose to fry there brains on god knows what, listening to god knows what. But I'm as open as the next man, and I am happy in the fact that I know what I like and its musical and above all its got SOUL.

it seems that (unproportional) success in itself is desirable for many of you. that's the result of a trick played on you. keep em down but let them dream and get glimpses of the holy grail so they'll gladly bend their backs to the system's rules.
but it's tipical for the times we live in: success is unconditionally good
on a practical note, how in hell can you even think of separating form (success) so bluntly from content (mass-appealing populist music in this case) and naively ask why deep house is not as successful as trance. graemlins/stupid.gif

i think alot of the music coming out now, house included perhaps, is the result of musical ADD that's developed. the formula has gotten so engrained (since say, elvis) that people can only focus on a piece of music for 3.32 seconds.
no one has any patience to feel music develop. it's why "classical" music is such an astoundingly niche, geezer-driven market. and that's pretty sad.
luckly some rockers are starting to defy that (like, say radiohead a bit)...but mostly we've all got ADD.

For the record, I did enjoy what Tiesto was playing on that little clip and could probably get into it under the right situation. </font>Sorry, I forgot to specify that she isn't into trance either, she listens mostly to hip-hop or rock as well as other mainstream sort of music. She wouldn't be able to stand trance. On that note, she would be ready to dance to some of our music, the ones that are closer to the hip-hop sound and I know many people that have a similar state. So I didn't even try to shove some Detroit sound in her ears, she'd just fall asleep! LOL!
Ray, to a certain extent, our music is repetitive if we compare to other style of music, for example rock, where the tempo and the melody will vary to a higher extent than house or techno.
And to add to what you were saying about enjoying his set, it's a question of tolerance and how difficult one can get. As much as I like the music we listen to, I try not to be a party-pooper when I'm with people in a club where they play trance, rock, crap, etc... luckily there is graemlins/all_coholic.gif

Although I really can't listen to trance for too long (those high pitched arpeggios (sp?) give me a headache ) I can imagine the palce was bumpin' and people payed 40-50 bucks to get in. So he made money and he had a good time, thats all I really want too, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Scenario:
You are offered to spin at a massive trance gig in an area like Tiesto....40 thousand or more folk...$50 a head...4 hours you get paid
The promoter gives you a few thousand dollars to buy all the current and old trance tunes...plus the time to learn them.
How many of you would take the gig?
How many wouldnt?

I was theEXCEPTION, not the rule back then.Woody has spoken, i mean come on, he's the "exception", so just bow down and let him reign supreme, it doesn't matter if he's white with a fade, it's all about the music ya know, he's old school, wise, experienced, and may know a bit more than most people, so don't come to DHP with a topic like that because well, Mr. Stash is too busy with other things, just let him rest, he needs it, he's getting to old for this crap.

This thread has actually turned out OK, better than Tiesticles pic.
Some things to point out from people comments, Big Fun being a huge crossover hit - with video etc.
Well, There was a BBC video made for "Jack you body" a lot earlier, when it went straight in at No 1. The BBC made the video as they couldn't locate J M Silk to do a live TV appearance, the BBC video became the video for the song.
U.S.A may have spawned House but it's the UK where it got chart success...
Jack your Body -
*No. 1 MAINSTREAM CHART SUCCESS *
so we must remember this in the future as our country/ experiences gives us some opinions that may vary depending where you are.
Mainstream chart success.
Farley - Love can't turn around - charted
Raze - Jack the groove - charted
Nitro Deluse - this Brutal house - charted
Dhar Braxton - Jump Back - charted
etc etc etc.
Also remember , when it came to Frankie Knuckles:- here in the UK he was probably better known as a producer, so when we talk about him selling (whatever) try and remember that it was his recordings getting him in the spotlight.
