Thought I would share this, yesterday I had to drive out to the burbs for dinner at my Aunt's house and because I live in the downtown core of Toronto, I was not looking forward to spending the next hour or so taking all the little roads to get there so......with sweaty palms and a palpitating heart, I drove on the damn highway all by myself!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you to all of you who encouraged a very fearful me to see beyond myself graemlins/respekt.gif Your voices ring louder then you may ever know.
Make it happen!

Yep, 405 goes towards Niagra. But I suppose the 401 is a lot more challenging.

Ahhhh, ok, I did not know this. But yes, the 401 is most horrible, everyday some one is losing there life on that highway. People driving like they got some where important to go to. My fear of highways began when I was hit on the 401 by an 18-wheeler, sent me spinning on the highway and I crashed into the guard rail. The truck driver just drove away (**** ass) This happened when I was 19. It has been quite a long time for this fear to last, but things are changing now because if I am meant to die on a highway this is beyond my control, however, I better have some damn good tunes playing. ;)

I did some driving over in the US for the first time a few weeks ago. It was pretty hectic at times.
Just remember, keep looking *ALL* around. All mirrors all the time, and expect the unexpected.
It's perfectly healthy to fear the road, and that fear will keep you alert (and alive).
All the very best

Hey GF,
At first, I wanted to post a reply (#16 of this thread) in order to set this "mutha" on fire!!!
However, after reading the previous posts, I feel obliged to not only commend you on tackling your fear, but to give you some timely advice as well:
tip#1: when on the highway, DO NOT tailgate EVER!!! Stay at least 6-8 car lengths away from the vehicule in front of you
tip#2: always pay attention to the car in front of the car in front of you (got that!!). Like this, in case that 1st car breaks, then you (the 3rd car) can react to that by breaking as well. Like this you can avoid any chain reaction accidents
tip#3: always be aware of your surroundings at all times. Even if you're coasting easily with no stress, make sure to check around you regardless. You need to know exactly where cars are in your vicinity.
This helped me recently, as a car in front of me suddenly broke, and I reacted slowly (courtesy of Utopia's Paradise. I had just finished the show. It was 7:30 am). In order to avoid a collision I swerved quickly to my right without even checking my blindspot. Why? Because I already knew that there were no cars in that right lane, because I had just checked about 10 seconds before the would-be collision. LOOK AROUND!
tip#4: keep distractions to a minimum. Especially no celly on the highway. Even the music shouldn't be too loud, unless it's one of mine (LOL)
Good courage GF graemlins/thumbsup.gif
