This was in yesterdays Suntimes in Robert Feder's Radio Article:
Competitor challenges V-103 with 'The Groove'
After giving giant Clear Channel Communications a run for its money by taking on top-rated WGCI-FM (107.5) with an urban-contemporary challenger, Crawford Broadcasting is at it again.
This time, Crawford is going after Clear Channel's adult urban powerhouse WVAZ-FM (102.7) with a rival it will call "The Groove."
Starting at midnight Sept. 29, Crawford will drop its gospel music format on WYCA-FM (106.3) and transform the station into WEGV. "The Groove" will take dead aim at V-103 with a format targeting African-American adults between the ages of 25 and 54.
Crawford will expand its coverage area by simulcasting the format on its Rockford station, WYCH-FM (106.3), to be renamed WRGV.
"We're going to give people exactly the kind of music that they want and love," said Taft Harris, general manager of Crawford's Chicago outlets. "It will be a combination of what V-103 used to be with a little splash of today in a very aggressive format."
Crawford used similar strategy in 2001 when it challenged WGCI's urban monopoly with what is now called WPWX-FM (92.3) or "Power 92."
For its first 45 to 60 days on the air, "The Groove" will air "wall-to-wall music," Harris said, without jocks or commercials.
While he plans to reassign WYCA's employees elsewhere in the company, Harris said he is looking to hire a new staff for "The Groove," including sales, programming, marketing and on-air positions
The Groove used to be on 102.3 in Crete, but the signal was not strong enough to do battle with V103......I tossed this idea to them when they had the suggestion line.....to move to 106.3....
The next this was the format,,,,,
The key statement is here:
"It will be a combination of what V-103 used to be with a little splash of today in a very aggressive format."
V103 used to be WBMX.............we will see on Sept. 29th.......
