QnA: Cheddi Simmons
An accomplished DJ, don't test his skills on the turntables. With a keen understanding of house music and an ecclectic record collection, Cheddi 1343 Simmons takes part in this week's BounceFM QnA. Thanks Cheddi for keepin' it real, as you always do. Here's some of what Cheddi had to say:
*House music is not gay music!*
MOST EMBARASSING MOMENT(S)
In relation to House Music . . . just the people who don*t get *it* and inappropriately engage me in debate about why am playing this music. I would normally pay someone no attention in any other situation. So I consider that embarrassing, having to stoop to their level.

I was on the phone with a female couple of months ago I just met. I was listening to music off DHP at the time. She asked what was I listening to. I told her some HOUSE music... She says ain't that gay... I started to snap. graemlins/cussing.gif Not there is anything wrong with being gay, but the way she said it was like an insult... Like most of you, I take my music serious. So I asked what did she mean by gay? She begins to tell me that all the guys she has ever met that have liked House music were either gay or in the closet. She also said that House music was "SO 80'S..." I have not talked to her again since...

If any of them had been to a gay club recently, they would know that its mostly hip-hop played at the gay spots.
IGNORANCE!!! People gotta wake up. To me, aside from gospel, house music is the most POSITIVE form of music available today. The power is in our hands though; we gotta let the people know what time it is.

Went to a house party last week and threw on a DHP mix. Some girl who's 'down with progressive DJs', starts stating matter of factly to a friend that "this is gay house", or occasionally when the beats were harder and void of vocals "I like this one".
Needless to say we argued and ultimatley solved nothing.
AR15firing.gif Later on she had the nerve to try taking me to a progressive club. graemlins/sleep2.gif

House aint gay anymore..they just listen to shit music at gay clubs in Chicago now...The straight boys got the music now..but don't know how to throw parties...not enough flair, too inhibited, too much standing around..no comparison gay House parties cannot be equaled the intensity is way too high. So if it has left the gay scene the woogies damn sure aint gonna keep it alive..too many rules and regulations and too much tryin' to be like Ron.

Heres a story you all might find funny.
Ever heard of DJ Nautigroove?
He came in to the record shop that I was working at about two years ago. He was playing at some rave that night and stoped by to check out the shop. I was playing some records when he came in and he asked me if I usually play this "gay house" and said "back in Cinci we call this stuff gay house". I had know Idea who he was at this point. I asked him if people are in to Detroit Techno and Chicago House where he is from and he replyed that the only good DJ out there is Nautigroove. I replyed, Man that guy sucks! He left shortly after.
If anybody on this board is from the Cincinati area and happens to run in to Nautigroove. Tell em the guy from Hypervinyl says he still sucks graemlins/rofl.gif

Tis Tis Tis, Maybe our people will wake up one day. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif </font>[/QUOTE]Same type of chick..
One day she says ohh I hate house music....
Days later.. driving in my whip with a dope sound system playing one of my mixes..
She goes I like that.
What kind of Music is this???
I say its that gay music. LOL
She goes this don't sound gay.
I said, No?
She says who is this?
I say its ADEVA. "You can't keep comming in and out of my Life".
She gooes ooohh this is house music.
I wanted to pull the car over and kick her azz out but, I didn't.
What I did was educate her by letting the mix keep playing.
By the time she got out the car she was like where do they play House music?
The following week I took her to the Choice.
I wont name names but, she's been Housin ever since.
The morial to this story is we have to educate the unknowns. Introduce them to it. Don't turn your back on them cause they can be part of the house music future if guided correctly.
We who know the real deal need to always represent house music as much as we love it. Even if it means playing it lound in your cars, out your apartment windows, for some of you DJ's who play a mix bags etc..
Its our job to keep House Music on the Map! Period!
Do your best and give your all everytime and one day soon we will have the view from the top again. graemlins/acclaim.gif

graemlins/acclaim.gif [/QB]True dat, KP. I try to expose folks at every opportunity. I consider myself doing them a favor...trying to wake them up from a deep sleep. I've said it before: People starving in the desert don't eat the sand 'cause it tastes good. They eat the sand 'cause they think that's all there is.

The reality is house music is contagious. If people want to say it is "gay" music, I am not offended in the least. Yeah, I hang out with "gay" people all the time and we dance until we think we are tired. Our parties go into the wee hours of the morning, and we never want to go home. I go to the party to sweat out my hair, make my shirt cling to me, and wear down the rubber in my sneakers. And when it is all over, I head to the 7-11 on the way home to get a Red Bull, give the cashier a sweaty dollar from my back pocket, hop back in my car, pump some more house music, and seek out my next "gay" house party! http://deephousepage.com/smilies/club.gif
If gays are truly listening to commercial hip hop now, I may need to go on a quest to make some conversions, and set them all "straight" ;)

If anything we as hetrosexuals can learn a lot from gay people. Technically gays built a strong
base for this music. Example-The Warehouse
Chitown Frankie Knuckles-Chitown Larry Levan-
N.Y Tee Scott-The Empire Roller Rink ,Better Days

didn't house... and disco for that matter emerge from a primarily underground gay male, black and hispanic scene?
although it's spread is worldwide... the forefathers (and mothers... lol) should be acknowledged...
i understand how one's sexuality being questioned could irk ones nerves... but if the person that you're trying to get with isn't hip enough to realize that all people, regardless of sexual orientaion, enjoy house... are you sure that you want that person by your side?
one of my first serious boyfriends was a tru house head and taught me a lot about the music... i didn't think that he was gay or bi... even tho i am (bi female)... i just thought that he had a serious appreciation for the music...
it ain't good to have e'rybody all up in ya corner... smile.gif

I don't hear so much the "Gay" term for it these days (Although that's probably what they are thinking). I hear that it's too fast. And I'm like, Well, it's not TOO FAST when you're 3 or 4 favorite House records come on. Like, "Follow Me, "Deep Deep Inside", & "The Perculator". House music has sped up a bit in the last 10 years but it's not that fast. Hip Hop & Rap have slowed down in the last so many years. So, I guess the change from a 95 bpm cut to one that's 125 bpm and over is a bit much for some.
One of the things that I think is so productive in getting the word of House Music out there is when they have those parties in the parks and other outside events. I went to one in a Brooklyn park just before the summer ended. I saw people that were in the park for other reasons, stopping to take a look and listen to the music. And they saw all kinds of people dancing to House music. Everyone from a lady with a baby carridge, to Big Body builders, to young and old couples, & to Thugs and Thug-ettes. I hope that that experience changed some of those people minds that were watching, about House music being for just one type of person/crowd.
Just my 2 cents.
Peace,
Toe Knee
