What are some of the songs that were hits in the nightclubs between 1970-1975. I have read about "The Loft", "The Gallery" " Better Days" and of Dj's as Nicky Siano, Walter Gibbons,David Mancuso and many others.Does anyone of some of their favorite songs they would play, or what was popular and the clubs they played in? Thanks hail.gif

Why not go through all those mixes in the archives and have a listen to the earlier ones.

I've done some digging there and did not see much
of anything from the 70's, let alone the EARLY 70's.

That time-frame appears to be poorly represented in
the world of mix tapes.

Discotiser from 78 is very interesting.
Have you seen any mixes on the archives that are
earlier than that?

Thanks hail.gif In the earliest days of "disco" and proto-disco,
anything that was danceable was played, in the sense
that there was even more eclecticism than later.

If you look at a playlist of the top 100 Pop, Rock
and Soul/R&B songs of a given year from the late
60's through the early 70's, you'll find the songs
that were played by the early DJ's.

The real question is, what did they play at that time
that was "UNDERGROUND", ie, NOT on the charts and
not "popular".
THAT's the stuff I want to know about, since I've
heard and grew up on all the obvious stuff that can
be danced to.

Here's an url for a google search I did of 1970's
popular choons from WABC, a nyc top-40 radio station
I grew up to:

Here's the page I came up with, a 1970 WABC survey:

I don't remember the name and artist for everything
I've heard in my life, but I'm sure you can spot
material that was GOOD and DANCEABLE on this list,
though not a lot on this particular list.
The great stuff that's got a good dance beat
are songs were played by DJs, including NYC jocks of course.
Most early jocks were playing LOTS OF SOUL AND FUNK before DISCO became a unique, specialized sound.
What I'd really like to see
is the playlists for the NYC soul stations, which
would have tons of DJ material that never cracked
the pop charts.

Somewhere out there are ancient DJ playlists too.
Google is your friend.
:D

A good example would be the DJ Discotizer mix, but no one can seem to ID the tracks. So that brings up back to Mike's original query, which was songs were played?

Listen to DJ Discotizer 1970's (http://deephousepage.com/discotizer1.ram)

Jam this mix Mike it's dope.

Jam this mix Mike it's dope. Hi Michael,
Excellent mix, one of my favorites so far, even
though I've only begun to dig on the archives

I'm STILL WAITING for someone to help me identify
the first cut on that mix...it's a must-own!!!
This mix has been discussed repeatedly on this board
and no one seems to know what that first track is.

In answer to your real question, I would have
to compile a list of everything from the
R&B/Soul
Soul/Funk
Rock
charts of the late 60's and early 70's, weed out
the horrible/no-staying-power/non-classic crap,
weed out the slow ballads and non-danceable stuff,
and we'd wind up with a list that would be pretty
interesting.
We could show that list to David Mancuso and others
from my age group, like Nicky Siano and Frankie Knuckles, plus any English DJs our age, and we'd
have the beginnings of the answer.
That's a lot of work.
The REAL work is to get these other old-timers to
dig up a list of jams that were NOT pop/radio hits,
ie the real underground shit.
Here's one for ya:

Blues Magoos: "Never Goin' Back to Georgia"

Here's another one for ya:

Music From Lil Brown: "Paint It Black"

John Hall,

Dude that first track is superb... that sound is soothing with those horns, and that bassline. Those background lyrics "Tell me, Tell me when you're coming home" make the song complete. BTW what's the second song, they say "The beat goes on, the beat goes on and on, Sweet music (Do it!)", which "And the beat goes on is this one"?

Salsoul 12", included in vairous legit CD re-issues/
compilations of Salsoul material.
From my repeated study of this, it sounds like the
12" version is really just an extended edit that
repeats the song 2 times.

amazing shit...discotizer is consistently working

Why not go through all those mixes in the archives and have a listen to the earlier ones. Hi OneLove
I've done some digging there and did not see much
of anything from the 70's, let alone the EARLY 70's. Also check out Dj Marble # 498.

That time-frame appears to be poorly represented in
the world of mix tapes.

Discotiser from 78 is very interesting.
Have you seen any mixes on the archives that are
earlier than that? </font>
My early fav's are Larry Levan's Mix number 7, 18 and 25. Although he doesn't play many early 70's
cuts.
I think your comment about poor representation is correct, so I stand corrected.

It's easy to put together a 'cutting edge' mix tape, with a good record collection and a liberal sprinkling of hindsight.
Maybe G-man knows the history of that tape?

I THINK west end re-issued that one recently,

I posted an interview with Nicky Siano and Mel Cheren on

www.vjsproductionsinc.com (http://www.vjsproductionsinc.com)
(click on the "tapes" area)

the recording includes Nicky dropping many early 70's tracks, and commenting on them.

It sounds to me like the West End 12", and I thought
it was Tom Moulton who did that "megamix".
I love Patrick Cowley's work, but had no idea that
he did any work for West End.
So a link to anything that confirms that would
be appreciated.
(I wouldn't be surprised if I was totally misinformed...
years of free Vodka Screwdrivers can do that to ya. ;) )

AND THANKS MUCHO for the head's up on Claudja Barry.

I've seen that 12" many times, but had no idea it
was THAT good....will find one asap.

Thanks SO much for that info! smile.gif

yes you´re right Michele is on west end.. I just wanted to clarify that it was Cowleys mix not moultons..

My reference is my own copy I´m looking at smile.gif

side a patrick cowley mega mix 14 min
side b moulton mix

the tasty part of the cowley track is only 5-6 min something, discotizer (great name..) rocks two copies ( as with everything else ..)

bout claudja barry, I´m not 100% sure its the one since I dont have a copy.. however If my memory serves me right claudja recorded a track called "johnny johnny please come home"..

I only know a few of the other disco-breaks he plays. for ex king errison -well have a nice day
there a re many yet to be id´d!

peace in the middle east /john

You might have better luck finding her album Claudja Barry "Claudia" (Salsoul-5525) 1978. The album version is 7:09 minutes long.

cheers /john Dude thanks!!! The search is on for this record. </font>
You might have better luck finding her album Claudja Barry "Claudia" (Salsoul-5525) 1978. The album version is 7:09 minutes long. [/QB]
The version that came out on Lollipop records (6306 105) is not the same, the album does contain 'Sweet Dynamite' which for me is a better track & surprisingly one that Tom Moulton didn't mix. The version to go for is the extended mix on Salsoul.

First cut I ever hear mixed was "Car Wash" by Rose Royce. It was at what my mother referred to as a rent party at Tee's apartment on Gerard Avenue. Musta been 1973-4 cause I think I was still in high school.

:D </font>
Hey John, i still have some original WWRL Big 16 Survey flyers from the late 60's and early 70's. Some of my faves from back then were:

"I got this tape from trading tapes over the internet some time ago. I have no idea who DJ discotizer is and don't know if its really from 1978 or not. The only thing I know is that he is supposed to be from NY.

-Gerard"

I just listened to this and have to admit, it does sound original. A lot of people forget that the DJs were not all doing these fantastic 10 minute long overlay mixes like they do today. the technology was different and the emphasis was not always on the mix, but on the programming itself. Having started in the mid 70s myself, I've love to see some tapes from those days through the end of the 70's. What a wonderful way to chronicle our past!

I remember THE BIG RL...
I mainly listened to WABC and WMCA, then got exposed to WWRL at summer day-camp, where a lot
of the kids listened to WWRL.

Didn't Frankie Crocker start out there?

I'll add this to my big list...that Joe Quarterman
LP is tha bomb...I believe the vinyl has been
reissued by Scorpio, and there's a Japanese CD
re-issue too.
