View Full Version : Gramaphone Raised The Price of Domestic 12" Again...

Seems like the 2nd or 3rd time in the last 12 months, domestic releases are now 7.99. Is this killing sales and support of vinyl? Would artists actually be moving more product if the price was 4.49 per 12" ????
Nobaody can bitch about the prices at Hot Jamz now, can they?? I prefer Hot Jamz anyway. Much better service.....JMJ smile.gif
Does Hot Jamz have a site? graemlins/conf44.gif

Yesterday I paid for some records in Blackmarket, London and realised (afterwards) I'd just handed over 17.99 UKP for Kerri Chandler's "Trionisphere" LP. That's taking the piss.

That seems to be the trend out here in the West--$7.99 for domestics. This is primarily why I can't buy new music right now. I just can't afford it. Aside from the occasional single that I deem a must have, I'm all about the clearance & discount bins.

No because @ $4.49 per 12" the record store literally has no overhead/profit margin meaning they would close within the month and the record would no longer be there. With no record stores to buy the products from distributors the distributors would sell nothing, they would go under, labels would go under and artists would be stuck trying to figure out what the efff just happened.
There are two solutions... price your product high enough to survive while not being so high as to run people away to another store, or for artists to find their own means.
Stores sometimes have a tendency to gouge people on a hot record, but its still up to you whether you buy from there or not.

That place is right across the street from my old high school. I wonder where I'd be if they were there when I was in high school???
Oh well, Imports Ect. had them all beat, no one treats their DJs better than Imports Ect. well maybe except Loop Record (anyone remember Jesse).

You might have to roll with me one of these times. The prices should be right in line with what Gramaphone charges now that they've raised the prices. Importes was the best. I am eternally grateful to Paul Weisberg for everything he did for me way back when, and Jesse Jones always took care of me at Loop.....JMJ

Used record stores are blowing out at 0.99 to 4.99 and doing a fine fast turn around business. It seems to me you would actually bring in more income by moving more product. For example , at 7.99 let's say the distributor price is 3.25 and you sell 50 units. (4.74 profit per unit). That brings you in $237. Now let's sell that same record for 4.49, and by lowering the price, we will move more units, say 100. Just by taking the price cut we bring in $474. I have cut down buying the amount of records I used to (esp. from Gramaphone) just because of the price raise. I'm sure alot of others have as well, thereby in the end hurting the amount of records moved.
vinyl smells good...

Oh, and GEMM too if I know it's a hard ass tune to get.

vinyl smells good... 3 things...
1. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't pay $7.99 for a domestic 12" either. That's a bit steep.
2. Used record stores or stores who just sell used records do not acquire those records via distributors and do not pay new distributor prices, they're paying "diggers prices" so they can afford to price their stuff accordingly and still make 50% or more profit per unit. Then throw in the fact that you might sell 49 records at a profit of only 10-50 cents a unit, but then you might sell that one original pressing of Apache @ $100 and your average profit margin for the 50 records is MUCH higher than anything involving new records.
3. Distributor prices are not typically $3.50 per domestic 12". They're higher than that.
Peace

You might go in there one day and be served whine and cheese. They made me feel like a king when I walked in, when I left I barely had bus fare home.

As a record store owner I was abit shocked when I went to Grampahone several years ago and their hip-hop twelves were $6.99. I thought it was just Chicago in general. In Pittsburgh I barely get away with $5.99 without heads complaining and wanting a discount.
I usually price the house twelves @ 6.99 because they tend to be a bit more expensive.
here is the wholesale breakdown
hiphop twelves wholesale price: 3.75-4.09
house twelves wholesale price: 4.29.4.79
imports in general: 5.99-8.99
basically unless you have Fat Beats volume there in no money in selling record. The real money is in the shipping and handling. There is even less money to be made on Cd's, so I pretty much stopped carrying them and we are running about 90% vinyl at this point.

What are you guys complaining about? For us poor Europeans who love house and buy 9/10 American records it's $12-$15 a record...
You can imagine my shopping spree when I saw that a new Moods'n'Grooves was just $5.99 in Detroit...
Lucky bastards!

Extremely knowledgable, and usually right on the money with his recommendations. When he left, Tony Mundaca filled that role as well as Jesse at Loop. I stop down at Hot jamz when Steve Melvage is working, usually on Sundays. Steve knows his stuff. I sometimes have the store almost to myself, which is nice, because I like to hear things over the store system rather than the headphones.......JMJ

On the subject of service, how much do you need anyway? Other than asking one of the clerks if there are anymore of a certain record in the back or for special orders, I take the time to look through the bins and find what interests me. You don't need anyone pulling records for you. It not only takes the fun away from record shopping but also makes your sets sound like everyone else's since you're being recommended the same records everyone else is.

Damn...I still remember the $3.99 (US) price at Loop records. Even when I have no money, at least I could get three records a week. graemlins/cool_shades.gif

Not if you "click" with somebody that knows what you like and can suggest something that you might miss on your own. I don't want to sound like anyone else, and I don't. As far as record shopping being "fun", I see it as more of a necessary evil. Never be afraid to ask for help. None of us know it all.....JMJ smile.gif

I actually didn't mind going to Gramaphone because both Oscar and Greg knew what I liked and would pull or hold stuff for me, but I would still spend a lot of time looking for shit. It may be a necessary evil for some, but to me, it's a hobby. I don't buy records because I need to. In fact, I didn't even have a pair of 1200's until maybe 3 years after I started collecting.
So the point being service becomes secondary to me because I'm shopping solo anyway. I'm more concerned with good prices which is why I don't shop at any one store exclusively. A good example would be Dusty Groove. Their service is poo, most of their clerks are snobby herbs who probably stand around with their arms crossed at shows, but their prices are unbeatable. That is why I still order from them.

They need listening stations very badly, and customer service is pretty close to non-existent, but you can't beat the prices. I stopped going down there and order from the website these days. Their online service and shipping are excellent.....JMJ
