He's an old friend with seemingly good taste in music. He listens to a lot of old funk and soul and a lot of Latin music as well. When he heard I was now a house DJ he was like "HUH? Doesn't house music all suck?" So I made him a CD called "House Music That Doesn't Suck". I'm giving it to him this evening.
I threw in some old classics to try to drive home the point that House is Funk is Disco is Afrobeat is Brazillian etc etc. Some may find such an exercise futile but I'm always willing to spread some music around.
I'm curious what kind of songs y'all folks would put on a similar mix seeking to convert the lost sheep.
Here's the playlist:
Fatback Band "Wicky Wacky" (this song is straight up house IMO)
India Arie "Strength Courage & Wisdom" (I know he lsitens to some R&B so I figured he might dig this percusiion based cut)
Susana Baca "La Noche Y El Dia" remix (this is a recent 10" on Giant Step records that I really like. Ananda Project did the remix)
Osunalde "Cantos A Ochun Et Oya" (I now he listens to Fela so I figured the more African based stuff the better)
Afro Elements "Lagos Jump" (This is one of those Kerri Chandler reocrds on Ibidan that basically just put a beat under a stripped down version of Fela's "Shakara Oloje", which made for an seamless transition into the original)
Fela "Shakara Oloje" (I let most of the instrumental part run before mixing back out of it in to the next song)
Tortured Soul "Might Do Something Wrong" (one of my favorite songs and Osunlade's drums make the blend with Fela a natural)
Nadirah Shakoor "Pride" (More Osunlade. I don't think he's ready for Ann Nesby yet so some smoother female vocals seemed in order)
Kerri Chandler "The Old Office" (this is another transitional record that generously samples "Bra". I wanted to go in and out of house to make a point that it's all one big family)
Cymande "Bra" the extended edit (Again, this is straight up house)
Shadow Kings "Get Stronger" acapella (I ran this over "Bra" to show him just how deep house can get)
Teddy Pendergrass "The More I get" ( I wanted to put this in front of a vocal cut like "Days Like This" so he could see the parallel)
Sean Escoffery "Days Like This" (I know he listens to Roy Ayers and this song always brings to mind "Love Will Bring Us Back Together")
Dennis Ferrer "Palisade Park" (Jersey needed to represent and you gotta be dead to not feel the organ on this track)
James Brown "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose" (The organ seemed to go well with the previous cut)
Tom and Joyce "Queixume" the MAW mix ( I felt some Brazillian shit was in order to show the range of influence)
Bugz In The Attic feat. Wunmi "Zombie 2003" (this track is so damn funky and, IMO, Wunmi can pretty much do no wrong)
LLV "Cerca De Mi" (nuff said)
Earth Wind & Fire "Power" (Jellybean played this at BANG on Saturday and reminded me just how dope it really is)
