ebay:
-Maximum Joy "Stretch/Silent Street" Y - I'd been wanting this for a while...and I don't mind one bit that it's not on 99, I think Y was the original label anyway

2nd hand ($2 a piece)
-Solo "Girls, Girls (ah-ah-hi)" Plateau promo - Dope!
-Gary's Gang "Knock Me Out" Radar - cool track and it has a real cool blue & white Radar sleeve which I'd never seen before.
-Trans-Lux(Began Cekic) "Big Apple Noise/Street Noise" Master Mix records - Street Noise is Big Apple Noise playing backwards! How cool is that!?!
-Wilton Felder "Inherit The Wind" MCA promo - Nice

New stuff(on the Dubbed 0ut/Reggae tip):
-Patchworks "c.o.c.a.n./Steve McQueen" Quality Tape(Q-tape) records 7" - from France
-Jazztronik "Para a Terra" Flower - from Japan....looks like good reggae/dub is a worldwide thing!!

Also, this morning I was going through some of my rock records and came across The Beach Boys "Surf's Up" which has the track "Feel Flow" which I imeadiately recognized from the movie Almost Famous. This is a dope song very calming and peacefull....I've been listening to it all morning.

I will be picking up some more new stuff as soon as I get a little $. got like a $200 hold down at the record shop. Can't remember everything in there but there is a Telle 10", a new Kompakt release, and whole bunch of other stuff!

Hey Sueno, You got some nice ones. That Numbers remindes me alot of Jamirqui(sp?) but better.. Gonna check out some of the others above. You are the second person to reccomend that Congoman on Honest Jon's. I've got to track that down for a listen.

The "Big Apple Noise" is sort of an NY-80's-Breakdance kinda song...it's alright, but backwards it sounds pretty ****ed up! haha

Sh*t! you got some nice finds too!

Dancing Digits is SICK! I also really like the title cut "Do It Right". I've talked w/ Mr. Astri and he said that this was orignally recorded with a female vocal, but they opted for the Male vocal on the album.

That Eno & Byrne, is this the copy with the first version of Jezebel spirit w/ the female preacher?

I need to check out that Electric Souls record too...the Unabombers played here last night. I had planed to go, but I ended up missing it graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

Here is some stuff that I just got today...

[/QB]you got some really good finds there Klas...."everybody dance" is an often-overlooked Patrick Adams classic...Paul Mauriat's album is a very nice one especially if you're into the orchestral sound...Mr. Mauriat was best known for dishing out easy-listening lps in the sixties (i often see his earlier albums on the phillips label.)

"don't let go" is very nice...i recently found this at the local used vinyl shop and i initially was hesitant to pick this up thinking it would be a schmaltzy tune set to a disco melody but i was wrong....add to the fact that Jimmy Simpson did the mixing and the results are pretty darn good...

let's keep this going...get back at me!

let's keep this going...get back at me!The Paul Mauriat record is a disco venture, pretty nice. there is another Paul Mauriat disco tune that is on a small Salsoul sub-label called Free Spirit. I think the title of the tune is called "My Love Is Blue"(Note; don't get the PM album with "My Love Is Blue", it is nothing like the 12" version) I don't have it myself but it is pretty cool, I think it was sampled on one of the black cock records too.

I need to listen to the Tony Orlando again. But really what I am feeling is the instrumental part about 2/3 into the track and then out before the vocal starts in again ...I ain't hating on the vocal, I should really check it out again...Ijust really like that instrumental part!!

The B side of the 7" of Bumble Bee "Everybody Dance" has a track called "Funk for Days" which isn't on the 12" or LP. I don't have the original but it was added to the re-issue CD of the Sting Like a Bee album.

03-02-2003, 11:28 PM
here's what i picked up during the past week:

Raphael Saadiq f/D'Angelo -- "be here" (2002 Universal) a nice slab of neo-soul with a honest-to-goodness string section arranged by Benjamin Wright; performed by Charles Veal and the South Central Chamber Orchestra.. :D the strings really does make the song come alive...

Kool and The Gang Live at PJ''s (1971 DeLite) contains the famous jazz-funk number "NT" with ike's mood being another highlight.

lene lovich -- it's you, only you (mein schmerz) (1982/reissued 1987 epic)...duds in vinyl digging come with the territory and this is no exception..i bought it for the morales and munzibai edits on the flip side's "blue hotel" but even they could not save this piece of poppy, rapid-pace new wave....but hey, it was only a one dollar gamble (equivalent to one florida lottery ticket so off to the goodwill it goes unless someone here wants to take it off my hands!)

Al Hudson and The Partners -- Happy Feet (1979 Abc/MCA)....there was an abc pressing just before the label's demise and subsequent merge to mca....classic Al Hudson with the disco hits happy feet and you can do it...keep dancing is a gem.

Lonnie Jordan -- "different moods of me" (1978 mca)...not the best from Mr. Jordan but not bad either..."discoland" starts up corny but midway, the groove changes up to a sick bassline punctuating the "discoland" chants done by a group of children...

Jimmy Castor Bunch -- "bertha butt encounters vadar/the mystery of me" (1978 TK Disco)...Jimmy and Company have a sojourn at Hialeah, Florida-based soul and disco powerhouse TK before returning to the warner brothers roster under the westbound label....the bertha butt songs continues to permeate Jimmy's prediliction towards thematic silliness which i am fond of coupled with some funk-infused dancefloor material..."the mystery of me" really, really made this record worthwhile as it's a slow funk groove that is a standout ....this could go together with brother to brother's "let me be for real"...

Jesse Johnson -- "shockadelica" (1986 a&m records) Jesse's sophmoric solo effort from this former The Time Member with a pink theme that surrounds this album right to the label...nothing really remarkable with most of the songs having a watered-down Minneapolis sound...Sly Stone participates in the song "Crazay" (which i'm not too "crazay" about....although baby let's kiss comes out not too shabby.. "Black In America" deviates from the rest of the album in that it is mostly an acoustic effort sonically.

Sun -- "Let There Be Sun" (1982 Capitol) the early eighties was accentuated by an impressive quality in Capitol's rhythm and blues roster and Sun is no exception...hailing from the underrated hotbed of funk that is Dayton, Ohio, Sun stays true to its city's musical traditions with "slamm dunk the funk", we're going to party tonite", "super duper super star", and "be my lady"...one thing that i found interesting is that by this time, Sun did not implement synthesizers and drum machines into its production yet at a time when items such as the linn drum and the oberheim dmx were starting to make headway in the recording industry...

Pennye -- Pennye Ford (1984 Total Experience)

http://www.danceclassic.com/Images/Pennye%20Ford%20-%20Pennye.gif

...whooooooo! got this sealed for a dollar and i can not get enough of this album...my album of the week:) Pennye Ford is no stranger to the music business with her dad Gene Redd Jr. as producer of Kool and The Gang during their early years and her sister being the late Sharon Redd...Ms. Ford is perched atop a vintage 1932(???) Ford roadster (get the pun!) the record has the hits "change your wicked ways" and "dangerous"...however, the lp version of dangerous has a slightly different arrangement from the 12" in which Pennye sings in a softer register than the 12 (in which the latter has more "bite")...it still sounds very good though..."feel the music" is my least favorite (and it's still allright)... "uh oh i made a mistake" is a beautiful slow song...but the climax is "don't you know that i love you" whose introductory bars sound influence by "don't stop the music" with an easy going pace replete with a liberal heaping of synths and drum machines..."ready for love" and "spend my time with you" are other very notable songs...again, a stellar 80s album...Lonnie Simmons of Gap Band fame is the executive producer and Pennye also has duties in the piano, keyboard, and drum machines (linn, oberheim, and simmons)...among the background vocalists are Yarborough & Peoples and Maxine Waters (she did a lot of studio work for a handful of disco acts)...do not sleep on this album!

another song i am feeling recently although i had it for a few years is Lonnie Jordan's "fine foxy lady" from 1982's "the affair"...that bassline coupled with that rhodes, prophet 5, and the rowland clap machine makes for some slinky and slick early 80s funk...

get back at me!

Funny I just picked up a copy of "Makin' Music" by Garys Gang on Radar with an awesome dub on the flipside. The cost £3.00 sterling!! (about $4.50) bargain of the week. Hope you get the $200.00 ready on time!

Hey mate how goes it? You've just reminded me how good the record shopping in Ghent is! We will have to get over again in the summer.

Saw George Duke at the Jazz fest in St Lucia 3 years ago and he absolutely mopped the stage with everybody else except Chantelle Williams (they did a duet). Apart from one, or two dodgy production moments I think he's a genius, a bass slappin funky genius.

Respect to you my friend. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

that Ultrafunk cut is seriously insane:) not only it was one of the first 12-inchers on the TK Disco label but if my memory serves correct, Ultrafunk are credited for having the first British 12-inch single on the Cooltempo(?????) label...wait, i checked a site out and it's "Contempo".

"all over your face" actually sounds like a pre-cursor to one of Colonel Abrams's earliest efforts productionwise...i absolutely looove this song which took me years just to identify.

enjoy and have a great week Johnny!

that 29 feat. Lenny White album has the highlight "peanut butter" which distinguishes itself as a strident, bass-laden groove which has a few flourishes taken out of the Parliment-Funkadelic book circa 1979....among the lineup in this early iteration of the group is Don Blackman who went on to release a solo album in 1982 that is a highly sought-after rare groove lp.

SOS Band's "just the way you like it" is a stellar 1984 effort with the standout "no one's gonna love you" (the break needs to be worked)....i'm also fond of "weekend girl"...

never heard of "flamenco funk" but Jan Davis came up with a 12" single around 1978 on the PBR label as "Jan Davis Guitar" doing the songs Flamenco dance man and Stringed action...

get back at me!

Good call Jonny - Indigo Country has been on my want list for some time.

I just got back from holidays with a big pile of stuff. Some of the better ones are:

Anita Pointer - More Than A Memory (remixed by Tony Humphries)

Arlana - You Can't Keep Breaking My Heart (midtempo early house on Peach Tree records)

Janice Bulluck LP - Don't Start A Fire (lots of nice early 80s cuts)

Exquisite Taste - It's You (I'd been after this one for a long time)

Steve Abdul Khan - Gotta Have Your Lovin (Tee Scott!)

Mynk - Get Up And Dance

Peaches and Herb - Worth The Wait LP ( for a great track called The Love Stealers)

Sekou Bunch - Pretty Baby

Simon and McQueen - Let's Get Into It

Street Angels - Dressing Up (great UK track with "that" early 80s sound)

Bar Kays - Hit And Run

Kool and the Gang - Celebremos

Kool and the Gang - Celebremosi looove that Arlana song with that sassy spoken word past the middle where she puts down her man for the high phone bills....and one of the mixes has a sparse breakdown which only has a keyboard punctuated by pseudo-orgasmic "ooohs"...there was a morales and munazbai mix here.

is that Janice Bulluck lp on William Bell's label (WillBe) out of Atlanta and distributed by (i think) Jewel (Shreveport, LA)??? i have "do you really love me" on mp3 thanks to Ultra and it's an easy-going melody that i am thrilled with...

how does that Mynk "get up and dance" sound like...it came out on Posse back in 1981 and was produced by at least one or two members of the Fatback band (Gerry Bledsoe???) this is a rare single and it must be cold!

enjoy and get back at me!

Kelvy, yes to your Wilbe Records question. I was worried I'd never find the LP due to poor distribution but there it was in Denver staring out at me from the start of the B section, for $3.95. It has two or three superb tracks. I also got a Phyllis St James LP for a song called Phone Mate (the LP features the very nice Candlelight Afternoon, which I have on UK 12").

As for Mynk, well, slammin! About 113 bpm, pounding bass and little synth/vocal stabs, nice keyboard work. The second half of the 8-minute song is like an extended jam session, very funky but smooth at the same time. Mine's a promo - any idea if it ever came out commercially? Apart from Heobah, this is the best thing I've heard on Posse.

Blazingsoul, you got a mix posted anywhere, or can we trade? I'd love to hear some of these titles.

As for Exquisite Taste, I guess it's more 80s groove than boogie. Drum machine, very "New York City 1984".

i have that sugar bear johnson song as an mp3 somewhere....he did a lot of work for Willie Lester and Rodney Brown aka "Mainline Productions" who were behind Bobby Thurston, Gayle Adams, Sharon Redd, Evelyn King ("what are you waiting for"), and (i think???) the group "Khemistry" out on Columbia from 1982 who are known for the contagious classic "i can't lose with the stuff i use".

Blazingsoul, sounds like you've been frequenting the same quarters as the admin of http://vinyl.danceclassics.net heh! heh! heh! could you give us a little description on the rare singles you bought...thanks in advance and thanks for sharing your finds...have a great week:)

I don't have the original but it was added to the re-issue CD of the Sting Like a Bee album. From what I understand, "Funk for Days" was only released on 45. Brian Borden is the only dj I've seen play it and he plays the 45.

Klas, some of the other 12's that i know of on Rota are,
Panache Sweet Music (original & inst.)
Panache Sweet Music (remix & inst.)
Panache Not On The Outside/Jam On
Panache Every Brother Ain't A Brother(kinda sounds like the The Message by Grand Master Flash.)
The Breeze on Silver Dollar i don't know that much about, only that it was produced by the same people that did the Calander Hypertension tune.

The 12 on Sue i don't know anything about other than it's a great tune.Sounds like it came out around 82-83.

Yes i was happy to get rhe Sweet Music reissue and i didn't have to leave Vancouver to get it,a friend of mine had 2 so he gave me one.

Andrew,i don't have a mix up just strictly a collector.I know you would like any of the ones i listed.Do you have a mini disc player??ifso i could record them for you.

Kelvy, the link you put up is the first time i have been to that site and in the future i will be visting it more often :D .Thanks for the heads up on that one.

Robs,no hard feelings i hope,BTW is your id on ebay? is it by chance ze-brass ???
