View Full Version : how many untouchable artists do you know other than luther vandross?
he's an artist who NO ONE fukks with - not even the enquirer - as powerful as he is, no one really knows who his lovers are or even his sexual preference...never has there been a mainstream slanderous item writtem about him...
he's untouchable because of the respect he gets from the industry, not because of threats or promises to do bodily harm or extortion...
my moms told me that there is one other artist that's untouchable like luther, and that's johnny mathis...although this is before y'all's time, she said that even though folk suspected he was this and that, they never, ever messed with him in the media or anywhere else...
who else commands respect like that?

Vin Deisel (so far, that is)
Puffy
well, the story DID come out with lil' stevie giving his ex a venereal disease...al green is constantly being reminded of his "grits" days...
i can see maxwell (even though he's not a legend), but puffy? nope...
barry white has been mocked in cartoons and sitcoms - luther hasn't...
do y'all see what i'm getting at? i mean UNTOUCHABLE...or maybe it's even luther's class - i mean, billy cosby was once one of those untouchables, but he just had to go and procreate outside of the marriage...

Anita Baker is a good one...what did they say about Sade? </font>[/QUOTE]Wasn't there a thing where they claimed Sade had a breakdown over a love affair? Something to the effect of during a concert, after she finished singing "Hang On to Your Love," she said to tha audience "Hang on to your love because I lost mine," and then she walked off the stage in tears.
Then there was a thing about her having trouble with the law in Jamaica over driving/traffic issues.
How about Jodie Foster?///

Denzel and Luther are the only ones I can think of.
Johnny Mathis was outted by US magazine back in the early 80s. I remember it well because I roomed with his niece at the time and she was like, "I didn't know nothin' bout that." and I was like Well, youse a fool!"

who else commands respect like that? You know what..
Bill Wither's was one of the very best in soul and root's music!
We all know that he's not touring any more, he has a furnature company.
But his music is and allway's been for the age's.
Grandma hand's will allway's be the jam to me!
Alonge with lovely day, harlem, just the two of us, etc.
But the song that realy put tear's in my eye's has allway's been.."hope she will be happy'er with him."
Which in a macob way sound's like she's dead and gone to be with god, or a man scorn by a woman that left him.
I think that song was personal!
Respect.

Roberta Flack
No one messes with her. And no one writes anything bad about her. She has a rep as being a real nasty b****. There's a story of how she allegedly fired a drummer on stage on the spot, and replaced him with drum legend Rick Marrotta (seated in the audience ready to go). Rick takes the chair, and she tells him, "Rick? I just fired a Black man, today. Now you better not F*** up!"
By the Way, Luther came out of her band. Luther's first album features Roberta's rhythym section at the time (bassist Marcus Miller and drummer Buddy Williams).

Is it just me, or was this thread originally about GAY artists that the press refuses to OUT (out of respect), not a thread about people who made some great songs?

But doesn't the fact that you know this story sort of belie the "nobody says anything bad about her" theory? This is, of course, assuming you were not there or didn't get the story from someone who was. I mean, I'm assuming you read it somewhere or heard over some media outlet.
