SONOTHEQUE ,THE METRO & EFFEN VODKA PRESENT

"THE SUPREME COURT HEARINGS"

DEEPLY SOULFUL MUSICS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

FEATURING

NICOLA CONTE

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 11 - DOORS OPEN AT 8PM

WITH RESIDENT JUSTICE CORTLAND

Sonotheque, The Metro and Effen Vodka are proud to present in conjunction with ‘The Supreme Court Hearings’ Eighteenth Street Lounge & Schema recording artist Nicola Conte on Tuesday, November 11. Combing a sophisticated modern update on the lounge aesthetic Nicola Conte has managed to bypass the formulaic aspects of the retro genre with his jazz-based assemblages that re-invent and re-interpret the seminal influences of artists like Ennio Morricone, Les Baxter, Henry Mancini, Piero Umiliani and Antonio Carlos Jobin.

Having founded the Fez Collective over a decade ago in Bari, Italy Conte began his apprenticeship both as a producer and deejay. Producing records on the Schema label for artist like the Paolo Achenza Trio, Quintetto X, Fez Combo and Balanco, Conte updated the sound of 60’s swinging Italian soundtracks with a modern jazz sensibility that paid homage to the quintessential Blue Note sound. This sophisticated combination of jazz, electronics and Bossa Nova with tinges of Indian sitar and psychedelic reverb reinvigorated the club scene in Italy and influenced artists like Kyoto Jazz Massive (also appearing at Sonotheque on Friday November 14), Thievery Corporation and Koop.

Catching the ears of advertising honchos at Acura Conte’s track “Bossa Per Due” was used in an ad but although appreciating the attention his musical mission was not retro oriented at all. As he has stated…

“ In the 60s you had the “Sidewinder” by Lee Morgan which was the music for a very big TV commercial, and television unfortunately is the biggest vehicle for letting people aware that there’s a different kind of music going on. And as long as you see that from this point of view it’s fine. If you start writing music with the only purpose of being used in a commercial and that’s your ultimate goal, so this is fake.”

Conte has been in high demand as a re-mixer/producer and has collaborated with Truby Trio, the Dining Rooms, Xaver Fischer Trio, and Yukihiro Fukutomi. His work has been featured on collections that range from the cream of the deejay/collector retrospectives like Patrick Forge, Gilles Peterson and John Kong.

Resident Justice DJ Cortland will open up for Nicola Conte with his unique blend of dusty 45’s, break beats, hip-hop grooves and world beats. Doors open at 9pm for the event.
