Hey Everyone,
There are a lot of changes going on in Humbolt Park that we Puertoricans and fellow Latinos in the community do not know about.
On Monday there was a meeting held at La Casa Puertoriquena who is in charge of the Puertorican Parade/Park Events. The City of Chicago/Politicians/Others are increasing the costs on everything going on at the park. Basically they are trying to take the park away from the Latino/Other nationalities who participate in these yearly activities in the community. They are increasing the costs on licenses, permits, baseball fields, etc. adults/childrens leagues)
and want to turn the fieldhouse at the beach into a restaurant. Years ago the park was donated by a millionaire to the community for public use not for profit or private use.
Obviously MONEY is the driving factor, as always, because the area has changed, the market value and taxes are ridiculous. Most people, especially the elderly that have lived in this area can't afford to stay there anymore. There has been discussions on changing the Puertorican Festival to Reese Park. And the city usually has picked up the tab for cleaning the park after the event. Last year they would not do it. At the last minute many other fees were imposed on the Puertorican Parade Committee which left them at a loss of <$100,000.00. Yet we know that the city has done clean up in the past for several other ethnic functions. So why are we being singled out.......
Whether you live or lived in that area at one time. If you have enjoyed this activities in years past and if your children participate in the sports activities or not you need to get involved. They are giving us 1 week to get it together and show some support for these events, otherwise Humbolt Park will be lost forever. If you don't already know there has been discussion about taking the Puertorican Flags down on Division Street. Can you believe that....
I myself grew up in Logan Square but my dad/uncles have played baseball at Humbolt since they were teenagers, late 1960s. My brother played there since he was 7 and his son has been playing there since he was 3 until present. My husband has been playing there for the last 9 years and my son which is 3 today is going to play there this summer. I cannot believe that this family tradition for our family and so many others will be coming to and end if we don't stand together and show the city that we do care. There is only 1 Politician, I think is Billy Ocasion, involved in this fight. Where are all the other Alderman and Congressman that we have voted for? So I am asking you for all the times we partied at the festivals growing up and played there lets not let our kids loose out. They have Baseball, Football and Soccer leagues playing there. These are activities our children of all races need. Let's not let the money hungry people take this away from us.
Next Wednesday there will be a protest downtown at City Hall regarding this issue. I ask you to please get involved and join us for at
least 1 hour. We do not have the exact time but I will keep you posted. I ask you to please forward this to everyone you know. Whether your Puertorican, Mexican, Cuban, Black or Other nationality, this should be in issue for all of us united as one.
The more people that know about this the better. You know we as Puertoricans have been criticized in the past for not standing
together and showing support for our community. Let's show them that we are here and have a voice just like everyone else. The African American Community and Mexican Community, like many others always stand strong and united. Please let's do the same......
Call your local Alderman and Congressman and ask them what they are doing to stop this from happening. This is there time to do
something for you....
For further questions call Puerto Rican Parade Committee 773 292-1414 and ask what you can do to help. Or Billy Ocasios office 773 276-4269 on info. for next weeks protest downtown. Remember this is the only alderman involved at the present time......
Thanks to everyone for forwarding this message and for taking the time to read this.
God Bless and Good Luck to all.....
