Greetings all:

Quick question ... back in the day Farley used to drop the song 'Walking On Thin Ice' by Yoko Ono and I have come to find out that there are different versions. The one (I believe) he played was on Polydor, but all I seem to find are copies on Geffen Records. Are these versions the same? If not, how do they differ? I see that the Polydor version says 're-edited by Joseph Wyatt.' If anyone could provide some info, I would appreciate it. Peace!

Peace.

From what I can remember Joseph Wyatt's edit starts the song with the bassline and beat for a few bars before the rest of the instruments and lyric kick in. More dj friendly. The Geffen version as less bars of music before the vocals start.

On the Geffen version the songs fades out with Yoko doing that screaming thing; the re-edit fades out the way it comes in- with the baseline and the beat.

I'm sure there is more.

Both versions are pretty cool. I have both but most always play the Geffen version, which is the original and the version I was used to hearing at the Garage and the Zanzibar. If I'm not mistaken, the Geffen disc may be rarer (if that's a word) than the Polydor so if I were choosing I would go with the Geffen because you also have the Yoko/John call on the flipside that makes a great sound effect. I'm quite sure you'll get different opinions on this but from my experience, both can rock a party majorly. Good luck.

if the geffen is a u.s. copy it's worth a fair bit of change. the polydor is just a re-edit. you could do the same thing with two copies of the original.

I actually prefer the Joseph Watt version - it's extended and the sound quality of the 12" is better, imo. Joseph Watt (RIP) was the founder and main remixer of the Razormaid remix series - he was one of the greats. Had quite a knack for taking new wave and alternative records and giving them the dj-friendly treatment. Razormaid remixed pretty much all of the new wave dance hits of the 80s and early 90s...and had nifty colored vinyl and great packages as well...

That's interesting cause I mainly take the Geffen version from the break (Yoko screaming) and work it to the end, which I felt was the best part of that record. I have to explore doing an extended mix using the Re-edit.

Great info thanks. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

TM </font>[/QUOTE]Yeah - re-edit has an extended intro for mixing...this record blends really well with Inch by Inch by Persia...

The funny thing was it was part of a two disc compilation and "Walking On Thin Ice" wasn't listed as one of the tracks.

Actually, it was Art Maharg, Joseph Watt's original partner in Razormaid that died. Watt is still alive and doing remixes as far as I've been able to determine...

Juan, FYI the Geffen release clocks at 5.58min & the Polydor at 7.17min. The Polydor release also has 'Cape Clear' on the flip, produced with Bill Laswell which is quite nice in the Instrumental mix.

SP Yeah, what he said, I love the B side because Yoko stays silent ;)

I know most you guys probably don't listen to the twisted label much as it may sound a bit to progressive for the deep heads but they put out a double pack of Remixes of the track. Danny Tenaglia does a good prog mix of it but on the deeper end of things Francois K and Eric Kupper remixed it twice with a vocal mix and a "hard as ice" mix and they are sick!!! Wicked Detroit synth sounds. Check it out, very worth while and affordable as it is domestic.
