View Full Version : Surprising?

Just got this in an email. I got a kick out of this. Sad but true.
The following scene took place on a BA flight between Johannesburg and
London.
A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a black man.
Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air-hostess. Madam, what is
the
matter, the hostess asked. You obviously do not see it then? She
responded,
"You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to
someone
from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat".
"Be calm please", the hostess replied. "Almost all the places on this
flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available". The
Hostess went away and then came back a few minutes later. "Madam, just
as I
thought, there are no other available seats in the economy class. I
spoke
to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the
business class. All the same, we still have one place in the first
class".
Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued. "It is not
usual for our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit
in
the first class. However, given the circumstances, the captain feels
that
it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone sooooo
disgusting".
She turned to the black man, and said, "Therefore, Sir, if you would
like
to, please take your hand luggage because a seat awaits you in the
first
class". At that moment, the other passengers who were shocked by what
they
had just witnessed stood up and applauded.
This is a true story, which is not usually told.

Was that an e-mail from some one you knew?
That's one is a little shaky story DL.
Specially coming from that part of the world.
Why did she do all that? Just to make a point? Is there any other details to this story?

It's a damn shame that in this day and age that people continually allow their ignorance to show in public. There is not one race of man that was born superior to another. All of us have the capacity to achieve greatness, the simple life, or mediocracy. There are people of African descent who are violent, criminal minded, and basically 'repugnant', so-to-speak. On the flip side, there are people of European descent who are just as violent, criminal minded, and 'repugnant' as well. Europeans history with regards to people of African descent bears this out. The slave trade, colonialization of Africa and pilageing of its' natural resources, lynchings of Blacks in North America, racial profiling, harsher penalties for Blacks for the exact same crimes as whites, etc. are a testament to her own peoples 'repugnancy. Add in Asians, Arabs, Hispanics, etc., who also fit the profile of having their share of 'unsavory' individuals among their group. No race of people have a monopoly on 'wholesomeness'.
This lady must have truly been 'old school'. She probably grew up in a time where Blacks had no rights that Whites had to respect. Fortunately for us, our ancestors fought to achieve the same basic human rights as anyone else. Her line of thinking with regards to Blacks is outdated, and fortunately, her ignorance did not go unchallenged.
We as human beings still have a long way to go with regards to respect for one another.

Can't say that I agree with this. Hidden ignorance is tantamount to willfull blindness. Neither solve anything. The more it's out there, the more it can be discussed and thought about...etc.

This story was told to me by the wife of a good friend of mine who is a travel agent at AAA here in Madison, WI. A man comes in wanting to book a trip overseas. The secretary told him to take a seat at Carolina's desk and she would be back in a second to assist him. Carolina comes out of the back room and sits down. The guy quickly gets up and says "we have a problem here". Carolina said that she was clueless as to what the guy is talking about. She says the man repeats "we got a problem here a couple of more times" then Carolina says well then let me get the manager. So she calls the manager and has him come to talk to the man who says to the manager "Come on, you know what the problem is". The manager and Carolina still have no clue as to what the problem is. Then the man says pointing to Carolina that she is the problem. He then says "I am not gonna be waited on by some black". Carolina said the manager and her were speechless. Then the manager said sir I'm afraid we don't want your business can you please leave.
A lot of us are used to dealing with ignorant people but sometimes it catches you off guard.

myth or not, it is a great story. whether this actually happened is irrelevant - this is the way things should happen when one is confronted with this type of thing.

Myth, or not things like that are bound to have happend. I would love to have been a fly on the wall to watch the lady squirm for the rest of the flight!

there's a similar 'myth' that was popularized in an independent short film here in Germany titled "The Negro Ate My Ticket". its about a lady travelling on a bus, that gets rather stroppy towards a young black man who has just boarded and taken the free seat next to her.
anyway, while she's going on aggravating his ass, two ticket inspectors board the bus. so she smuggly pulls her valid bus token out of her purse and says something to the amount of her neighbor, being black , probably not having a valid ticket himself, like all black people do. so as the inspectors make their way through the bus and are just about to reach their seat row, the young black guy suddenly snatches her token, puts it in his mouth, chews it up a couple of times, and swallows it.
next thing, of course, it is "may i see your tickets please?". so the brother, double smuggly, produces his token. and now it is her turn. and she's all red in the face and squirming in her seat, and she incredulously says "the negro ate my ticket!"
and gets fined for joyriding.

Those stories sound like myths. But they're funny graemlins/beerchug.gif
graemlins/respekt.gif to the air-hostess and the ticket muncher.
It's a shame a black pilot didn't get out the cockpit for a chat with that woman.
