I am curious to know how you all define a "friend"? What are the required characteristics of a friend?
Someone that has your back no matter what. That's a friend.

Friend Is a word we use everyday
Most the time we use it in the wrong way
Now you can look the word up, again and again
But the dictionary doesnt know the meaning of friends
And if you ask me, you know, I couldnt be much help
Because A friend is somebody you judge for yourself
Some are ok, and they treat you real cool
But some mistake kindness for bein a fool
We like to be with some, because they're funny
Others come around when they need some money
Some you grew up with, around the way
And you're still real close too this very day
Homeboys through the Summer, Winter, Spring and Fall
And then there's some we wish we never knew at all
And this list goes on, again and again
But these are the people that we call friends
When we first went out together, we barely knew each other
We had no intentions, on becoming lovers
But in no time at all, you became my girl
Me and you, one on one, against the world
Talkin on the telephone for hours at a time
Or else I was at your house, or you was at mine
Then came the arguements and all kinds of problems
Besides making love, we had nothing in common
It couldnt last long because it started out strong
But I guess we went about the whole thing wrong
Cause out of nowhere it just came to an end

For me, a friend is also someone who teaches me about myself, corrects me when I'm wrong out of love and not the need to be right. A friend is someone that I respect and admire. Someone who has a quality that I lack or need to improve in myself. A friend is someone that truly likes me for me on their own, not 'cause the "popular" crowd may think I'm cool.

someone who knows and appreciates you no matter what horseshit you might do. they don't need a thorough explanation as to why you did this or that and trust that at the end of the day you're still worthy of their affection and apreciation.
a friend is someone who doesn't expect anything from you AND is willing to pitch in when your at your weaker moments as opposed to making firewood out of a fallen tree.
a friend is never suspicious of you, they trust you.
friends are rare....hi chica de viernes.

A friend is someone who activly practices reciprocity with you. A friend will treat you like they want to be treated (how they really want to be treated). A friend should be the mirror image of yourself, the way you think, your consciense and your counselor. You should be able to trust that person with all you posess, with your lady, your life, your records  etc.
Unfortunately I don't have many friends. And I've found out who weren't my friends before I found out who was mad1.gif

OATH TO YOU...
When you are sad, I will get you drunk and help you plot revenge against the scum sucking bastard
who made you sad
When you are scared, I will laugh at you and tease you about it every chance I get.
When you are worried, I will tell you how much worse it could be and to quit complaining.
When you are confused, I will use little words
to explain it to your dumb ass.
When you are lost, I will answer my cell
phone and give you directions.
When you are sick, I will hold your hair while
you pay homage to the porcelain god.
When you fall, I will point and laugh at your
clumsy ass.
This is my oath, I pledge till the end.
Why you may ask?
Because you're my friend. And the whole reason people have friends is to have fun and its not too much fun being a shining beacon.

And a youth said, "Speak to us of Friendship."
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay."
And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;
For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.
When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.
And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.
And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

Anyone feelin' me??? graemlins/cool_shades.gif </font>[/QUOTE]I am definitely feeling you (except on the mirror image part, I don't know if I want my friends to be exact replicas of me).
Recently I have taken up the practice of not referring to everyone I know as my "friend." I now use terms like "buddy" or "homeboy" instead. Now if I refer to someone as my friend I have determined that they meet those qualifications. For so long I have been a "friend" to others but did not get a "friend" in return.

This is a really great topic and has made me think...
"Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born."
- Anais Nin
"Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being."
-Goethe
"Every gift from a friend is a wish for your happiness..."

a friend is someone that you can go six months without calling, andwhen you do call each other, the six months seem like it was only two days since you last spoke.
Because you both know that even though you don't see you, you are there for each other no matter what. graemlins/cool_shades.gif
