View Full Version : WHICH IS THE BETTER PIZZA - CHICAGO DEEP DISH OR N.Y.C. THIN CRUST???
Deep dish pizza from the original Gino's on Rush St. in Chicago is my all-time favorite pizza.
Shalewa claims to be partial to New York thin crust pizza.
For those that have tried BOTH types, which is the better pizza?? Chicago deep dish?? NYC thin crust?? And why?? Discuss.......JMJ ;)

I've enjoyed both and they are both DOPE but I think I would go for NYC Thin Crust because the fresh mozzarella, sauce and thin crust "taste great" but are "less filling" (so I can eat more! mmmmmmmmmmmmm).

Unfortunately, most deep dish is too big and bulky too hold on to, hence the fork (and sometimes knife). Uno's isn't bad, but not nearly as good since they went national. Uno and Due (owned by the same family) were the originators of deep dish pizza......JMJ
Here's a bit of info on the originator of deep dish pizza:
http://www.pizzeriauno.com/legend.html
One of Ike Sewell's employees was Rudy Malnati, who went on to make a name for himself with the Lou Malnati's chain of pizzerias, famous for their own deep dish pizza here in Chicago......JMJ smile.gif

There is a spot on 97th street in broadway
that simply kicks ass. The name of spot is called
VIVA CAFE. They also have a spot in the village
on 2nd ave (I think right off of ST MARKS PLACE).
They are the only pizza shop beside 2 boots, that I can think of that actually have whole wheat pizza crust. Not only does CAFE VIVA have whole wheat crust ,but they also have crust made from spelt bread as well as the regular white flour.
Does chi town have that? graemlins/acclaim.gif

As to the which is better question, i've never had real deep dish so i'm biased. As to good NY "thin crust" pizza, there are two really good choices, Patsy's on First Ave. bet. 117 and 118 Sts. They use the same brick oven since they opened in 1933. I'm talking paper thin crust. And another "thin crust" winner is Godfellas. There's one in Staten Is and another one in Bayridge, Brooklyn. All fresh ingredients. Won every competition they ever entered.
Yorel, I think the one justin's talking about is Joe's at the corner of Bleeker and Carmine.
http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=2&restaurantid=559&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=50
The only Ray's pizza I know in Village is on Sixth Ave and 11 st. http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=2&restaurantid=560&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=50
But for some real off the hook regular (sometimes referred to as Neopolitan) pizza you have to go to Lorimer St in Brooklyn.
Sal's Pizzeria
544 Lorimer Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211
(718) 388-6838
This is in Williamsburg Section of B'klyn.
Here's something I came across that might help add to the topic.

Definitely thin crust.
I was lucky enough to travel in Italy, and I can guarantee that the best pizza in the world, by far, is made in Naples. Specifically Naples--not any other Italian city. It's the birthplace of pizza, and it is definitely thin crust, so the NY style stays truer to the original, and I prefer it that way.

You can just walk the street and get a small slice here, a small slice there. Their margharita pizza is quite good also.
I like both Chicago and New York styles just for the topic.

Remember I pissed folks off before talking about NYC's pizza.I was there last month...and it still sucks.Nuthin' like some bomb ass Chicago pizza.Even our thin crust is better.JMO.
i've had a lot of both, and they both have advantages, thin crust is cheaper, portable - in that you can walk down the street and eat it. i've survived whole weekends on Rays slices. deep dish is bigger, obviously, and you can put so much more in it, i've had all the usual suspects, medici, giordanos, unos, geno's in hyde park actually served thin crust. but if you put the very best thin crust against the very best deep dish then you would have to go with

i have to say that the pizza-hut version of the "chicago-style" deep dish sucked donkey nutz!!!! we ordered it here in dc just to see what it was like and it was sooooooooooooo bad. they didn't even call anyone from chicago to get a sample. that sh*t did not represent at all. they should have ordered one from carmen's or gino's east and had it fedex'ed and studied before they actually marketed it. http://deephousepage.com/smilies/Disappointed_anim.gif
i'll have to agree that both styles have their attributes. a few years ago i'd have voted chicago deep dish hands down--especially spinach, slices so thick and heavy you might break a wrist trying to pick it up so you eat it with flatware. now that i've had more than a little bit of the thin crust ny style, it's also really great. especially some of the crusts that have been extra light, fluffy, crispy, and chewey, all at the same time--amazing!

as someone who hails from the east coast and was raised on thin crust, i will always love folding that triangle and putting in my mouth....arrgh aarrgh...
but as a chicago transplant, i fell in love with da deep ever since i sunk my teeth into it. so flavorful and rich! i'll get thin crust whenever i can (ny style triangles...none of that square cut crap), but i definitely prefer deep dish. :D
btw, i still hate the bulls. they will always stink. graemlins/acclaim.gif

Being a Chicagoan, I'll have to say that I'm partial to deep-dish or stuffed but also as a Chicagoan I'm a natural born pizza lover so I really like both. One thing special about Chicago's deep dish is that you know there are only a few good places to get it. If you want it done right you're going to go to Uno's, Due, Geno's, Lou Malnati's or Giordano's period. Whereas in NYC the really good slices are harder to find because everybody sells thin crust.

We have talked about this at length just a couple of months ago. Like in June...
Pizza margherita, Neapolitan pizza is pizza.
Totonno's in Coney Island on Neptune Ave. is made well, he closes when he runs out usually by 8pm. Like yardie food, Brooklyn rules when it comes to pizza.
That Chicago stuff is focaccia, I know you don't wanna hear it.... ;)

Only place in NYC that I know of that sells 'deep dish' or 'thin crust' is Domino's or Uno's(which they claim originated in Chi). There are so many "Ray's" pizza in NYC and I don't think they're even affiliated. But for me the best Ray's pizza parlor is Ray's on 6th Ave & 11th st around the corner from Heartbeat records. UMMM! mucho cheese!
