Somebody asked me this the other day and I didn't have an answer.
How did the doo-rag evolve from what one would assume was originally a bandana or hankerchief in to the slick fabric it usually is today with the two verrrrrrrrrrry long stretches of fabric to tie it up (at least for men)?
I've got some theories but perhaps somebody here knows the real deal.
And, no, I ain't trying to braid nobody's hair ;) my GF does mine...

Hah!
Not sur of it's origins, probably bandana.
In Wild Style when Lee comes in the window, he had a Doo Rag that looked kinda modern.

I'm just trying to figure out how and why those ties got so damn long. I used to think it was a remnant from home-made doo-rags that has just now become a style. Anybody?...

if you look back in the 80s the panty hose stocking was worn also to keep the wave thing going. stocking caps were sometimes cut long. but the longer the stockings were the tighter you can tie the thing. IN the 80's Doo Rags were worn to maintain either a "shag" or waves.

I believe it derived from the stocking cap. My father use to make me one out of some stockings. So I guess someone just came up with a better way than to have to cut some stockings and tie a not in it. Plus when you pulled the stocking cap off if kind of messed your waves up that you just layed down. So some one came up with a good idea. I was eight when I got my first Doo-Rag. I don't know it is a fashion statement now.

I've got a better question. Why do white folks wear du-rags?
