View Full Version : The time for vinyl to die is soon?

There was a meeting in our local dj/producers group and we had a guest speaker (from Jungle Brothers..forgot his name). Anyways there was a time when we spoke openly about vinyl dj's.
I came to a self-reality...there was a time when everyone rode horses and the auto came in and there were still those people that insisted on riding their horse. Just like any technology, everyone makes the transition. Investing in an expensive CD player and copying all old vinyl to CD sounds tempting and is probably cheap in the long-run because we can bootleg from the internet for free (ALL WE WANT). So are us, the vinyl dj's, ever gonna let go? How are dj's around the world adjusting? Is vinyl no.1 over seas?

Most of the small independent labels that produce OUR music cannot afford to manufacture and market multiple formats (vinyl, CD, etc.), and while CD's are cheaper to manufacture, vinyl is still the primary format. I also don't see internet "bootlegging" lasting forever. The record labels and the RIAA are already cracking down on file sharing services and their customers. Support the labels and artists that produce OUR music. Stealing the music off the internet is not the answer. I have spoken.....JMJ :(

i suppose there's quite a risk vinyl will disappear on the mid-term as a music medium..But then we are talking 15 years from now..The time for vinyl to die isn't soon yet..

After all the fabric and material improvements on training shoes, making them lighter faster sleaker... Adidas are still turning out their old 80's classics at a decent rate. smile.gif

This weekend I had a conversation with a producer and he told me that the time is near, wich I regret. Everything is going computer these days, and I'm talking about software! Hardware is going out of the question. He also told me that the new finalscratch is comming up strong, more and more clubs are buying it, more and more dj's are playing with it, just for the possibility's of it. Allthough, he didn't change my mind! ;)

Hey y'all have'nt you heard it's hip to be nostalgic. This past Friday (casual dress day) I saw a broker wearing some Pumas. Go to the club people are wearing their worn out Levi jeans, "Atari" t-shirts and trucker caps! We're way ahead of the trend by having purchased our vinyl, YO!! :D
This is somewhat OT, but you have to consider that everything that has been done up to this point has been done on hardware...so naturally the ones pushing the envelope are also the ones switching to CD, Pro Logic, etc...but how many of us fall into that category (of innovators)? I will most likely go the hardware route when i start buying production gear, because i need to learn about the old before I can get into the new.
It's like a new DJ who buys the Vestax turntables because they claim to take scratching to a new level...but if Qbert can do what he does on 1200s, then why are they not good enough for amateurs?
I was reading a great interview in Home Recording with David Frank of The System. He basically said that for all the great new equipment being released to produce music, there is not innovative music being made. Maybe we should stick to the basics and learn them well, rather than jumping to what is new simply because it is new.
Again, this does not apply to the pros, but to amateurs like myself. Welcome to the board Clos, peace

As long as they keep making turntables they'll keep makin' vinyl, no matter how many companies stop makin' them.
And if more companies stop makin' vinyl, there will be those few who will capitalize on the fact they are the few that will make them.
Long live vinyl!!!
