What we need (among other things) is a leader that is uplifting. That is inspiring. That will mobilize us into 1 unified direction. .. that doesn't work on fear, but motivates us to direct action and personal involvement based on our finer instincts and motives .
Who can do it?
Because until that happens, I don't see long-term change happening. How about you?

Long term change obviously didn't happen with MLK, else we wouldn't require another leader.

Isn't the fact that many people are programmed to have a need for a "Leader" one of the reasons why many people can't comprehend the words "DO IT YOURSELF" these days?

Folks gotta get up off they ass and get out of their heads this antiquated idea about some messianic figure coming down from the heavens to lead us to the promised land (wherever/ whatever that is). Most of the "leaders" now ain't qualified to lead you across the street, let alone any kind of viable movement.

america is one of the last places that needs/wants or could produce a leader. say we get a leader to guide us to greater heights of awareness. look @history and you what will happen.... everyone will eventaully disagree on what the point is. make sense. we are too individaully minded to even get behind one person. do think it possible for people to look beyond themselves and figure out what is best in general.... for the group and not themselves? in the end we all have our own agendas and will do what we have to do to realize this.

it's funny how effectively people can and have in the past rallied behind people who are there to simply and quite uniformly say "no" to progress of any kind (except business) and "yes" to the status quo.
