Hello there, what a site;
This is my first real post here, so best make it a good one;
RRRight, I have an RME Multiface soundcard, and im recording my mixes with Goldwave;
My mixer is connected to the soundcard from the rec.out (line level phono jacks) to 1/4 inputs on the soundcard.
Now, despite peaking top red on the channels, peak red on the master (on my mixer) and peak red on my soundcard inputs, Goldwave barely hits half volume...
this isnt right, ive nowhere to go on my mixer (all red) and my mixes are still too quiet
i can boost the volume post-mix, but feel i shouldnt have to
any ideas graemlins/stupid.gif

I don't know anything about that card, but it seems like your input level (on your computer)is set crazy low.

One other thing, being a laptop, this is a PCMCIA soundcard, so its not part of the Windows 'Volume Control' tab, its effectively an external device...
it has its own icons in the control tray

No help there Is it a Brand Name laptop or a custom?
Check to see that the "line in" is checked and turned all the way up.
Also make sure you don't have more than one thing going into the line in or they will cancel eachother out. This is how I have my mixer and PC setup going through my stereo so I don't have to switch cables all the time.
Peace

it has its own icons in the control tray That may be the problem there. Did you have to install special software besides Drivers for this PCMCIA sound card?

There must be input level controls for your soundcard.
If you can't figure this out, you can always go back to just running stereo RCA cables out of your mixer to a mini-stereo jack on your laptop, bypassing the whole PCMCIA slot altogether. You'll just need some software to capture the analog signal.

these are the 2 softwares in my system tray, controlling this card;

within the multimedia settings in the control panel, what is the "preferred device" for play and recording?

If you're running some kind of digital signal in, like SPDIF, then there will be no volume control, as it it is digital. Direct digital connections never have volume control in my experience, as they are for making direct digital copies.
If this is the case, it would seem that your analog signal volume needs to be adjusted (boosted) before it is converted to digital.
Maybe you need some kind of additional pre-amp to boost the signal, rtaher than maxing out your levels on your mixer (which could create distortion).

reckon its a goldwave problem?

reckon its a goldwave problem? </font>[/QUOTE]Seems to be. That's why I said additional pre-amp - meaning: an third pre-amp device to boost your analog signal between your mixer and your soundcard.
That sounds weird though. Have you consulted with Goldwave about this? Is there a help section on their website?

it's not likely a goldwave problem as i have used that many times on a number of different systems and never had a volume problem like this that was related to goldwave itself
goldwave takes whatever level your system gives it, so the problem is almost certainly to do with the input level as controlled by your soundcard
on that first screen capture you posted there was a tab for "card 2" .. what is on that tab? i don't see any settings for analog in on what you posted
there is also the possibility that your card has 2 "line level" settings (+4db or -10db).. one for pro line level and one for consumer .. having it on the wrong one could cause this kind of problem i think

OHHHHHHHHHHHHkay
I checked out that help site. I was under the false impression that your were plugged directly in to this external device, bypassing the mic input on your laptop. That seems to be wrong.
If you are, in fact, simply running RCA cables in to your LINE IN mini-jack, then all you should need to do is adjust the line-in level. They have instructions for this on that help site, but here goes anyway:
Double click on the little speaker icon on your bottom nav bar.
go to OPTIONS
select PROPERTIES
select RECORDING instead of PLAYBACK, hit OK
a new box should launch with all of your input device levels
adjust the Line-in volume
you may also need to un-cjeck the other device inputs as they may be conflicting somehow.

Now, if you still can't get a decent level then something is definitely wrong. On my laptop, I actuallyhave to set the LINE IN level really low as the signal from my mixer seems very hot.

no, sorry to have misled you with that URL;
I am plugged directly into an external device
ie http://www.rme-audio.com/images/hdsp/multifr.jpg
http://www.rme-audio.com/images/hdsp/multiba.jpg
that thing.
goldwave is allowing me to select this unit as the input device
but no boost control for the input :(
