Being in a metaphysical dungeon which severely lacks true comradery and soul --- where cheesy pop bands and a lot of Ms. Clairol #38b blondes rule the land... oh my bad, I'm talking about Brum.

Anyhoo... I'm forced to draw inspiration from my superlative memories of music, dancing and fun in the CHI and NYC. In a haze of pleasant thoughts and smiles, I begin to think about Lil' Louis.

Personally, I have alway felt that he never quite received his "just desserts" from the holy-er than thou Chicago House officials. However, through my youth he made such a wonderful impact with his creativity and the energy he played with as a DJ.

Do any of you have any thoughts on Lil' Louis ?

.............. info on Lil Louis .................

Profile: One of the most popular Chicago house producers during the late '80s thanks to his massive club hit "French Kiss", Lil' Louis was also the only Chicago producer to successfully deal with the major labels; he released two albums for Epic, and only left the label at his own instigation. Born in Chicago, Louis was the son of guitarist Bobby Sims, who recorded for Chess and appeared with the psychedelic-soul unit Rotary Connection. He grew up with nine siblings and played both drums and bass as a child, then began DJing in the mid-'70s (he earned his nickname after appearances at the club River's Edge while still in middle school). By the end of the decade he had his own club, the Future, where he began working on his editing techniques, thanks to a cassette deck and later a reel-to-reel recorder. By the 1980s, Lil' Louis was hosting the biggest house parties in Chicago, and he began recording his productions around that time as well. His first single "How I Feel" appeared on his own label, and he began collaborating with Marshall Jefferson on several tracks -- "Seven Ways to Jack" by Hercules, Byron Stingily's "I Can't Stay Awake." In 1987, his new single "French Kiss" became a local hit, then a platinum-selling international classic after being licensed to CBS and ffrr. The success triggered a major-label contract through Epic, and the release of his debut album From the Mind of Lil' Louis in 1989. Charting a course across jazz-fusion and R&B as well as house, the LP was one of the best produced by any of the Chicago figures, and included session contributions from Larry Heard, Die Warzau and his own father on drums. From the album, the moody single "I Called U" became another club hit. His follow-up LP, the more stylistically unified Journey with the Lonely, didn't fare as well and Lil' Louis retired from recording for over four years, preferring instead to set up his own studio in New York and work on production with Babyface and Me'Shell NdegeOcello. He returned by collaborating with "Little" Louie Vega of Masters at Work and also worked on production for Black Magic.

Also records as: Black Magic, Honesty 69, Lil Louis & The World, Lil' Louis & The Party, Lil' Louis And The Diamond Corp.
Records with others as: Josh Wink & Lil Louis, Lil Louis vs. Hydrogen Rockers

PS.
Lil Louis vs Hydrogen Rockers did a version of French Kiss that is way the (bleep) out there; I had to buy it on GP. ON GP ALONE --this record had to be bought. That version is not for one that is bound by parameters --- its really out the box.

One of my fondest memories was hearing "French Kiss" for the first time at Medusa's. I remembering going to school the next day telling the House people that this new track was out that slowed down and how the girls reacted to it. I also remember how I used to stand outside the Bizmark Hotel on Christmas Eve waiting to hear Lil' Louis beat the box. I give him much respect...

I remember that night of the introduction of French Kiss to the world. I Remember that night like it was yesterday (considering I was very wasted and looking good with my Benneton gear) Lil Louis threw out promo copies of French Kiss to the crowd. I remembering grabbing two copies (one I kept and the other given to my sig other at the time mad1.gif ) Anyway, we would anticipate Lil Louis' parties, my girls and I would attend all of his parties and after parties. Those were the days graemlins/OLA.gif

I remember when Lil' Louis first played Drughead aka the original Blackout at the Bismarck hotel. I was sick, sick with the "house" fever. You'd thought I had the Holy-Ghost!

Endless memories of the Bismarck and Medusa --- again, I must say that Lil' Louis was indeed a fabulous DJ. His creativity in the studio was so understated. I, for one, played his albums over and over again. Even the lyrics captivated me.

Not to be on anyone's nutsac, but I do honestly and earnestly tip my hat to Lil' Louis --- another superlative talent from the CHI.

Drughead was the original "Nice and Slow" not Blackout.. I remember khats placed a tape recorder in the speaker when he had played it and it went around chicago with people screaming and stomping behind the track. Several mixes had that version in it with the low fi quality.

There's also another version of french kiss I heard that's a proto-type to the released version..

I'm going to have to write home to Angelique on this one.

It's tonemaster time. I got 3 tonemaster tapes left and I'm gonna have to do some homework.

Last question, was the proto-type to French Kiss ever played at Medusa or the Bismarck?

Hell, I need to find Lil' Louis... agent and have her fax him this thread. I'm intrigued and beguiled all at the same time.

Thanks Shannon.

~Efab </font>[/QUOTE]There were 4 Blackout versions that I am familiar with. The album version, the instrumental (also simulated by Darren Brandon), CD version on the Club Lonely CD which goes backwards at one point and Phase II (SICK!)... Several newer versions but we are talking about back in the day. Gene Pharris did an edit of his own to it that is off the chain.. And of course Rush had it going backwards and forwards at the same time...

The proto-type version I think was never played at a party by Louis. It sounds like a first draft but is dope in it's own right... That one would be really hard to find...

What high school did Angelique go to? I might even know her...

Lil' Louis has always been House Music's version of Prince. The man is pure genious!

He could write his name on a plate and I'd buy it.

Where ever you are Louis come back to Chicago and bless us with your sound one more time.

Definitely major props to Lil Louis. I never tired of his style and, in my eyes, he has not sold out. All his music stands the test of time. Say what you will about French Kiss nowadays, but tune is still the jam to me. Peace!

High school was the BOMB!! St. Iggy!!! Everytime I hear "French Kiss" I think back to the "good ole days" of HOUSE. The rayon shirts. Black patent leather shoes with the ribbon/bow for laces. Z.Cavaricci jeans. (generic version of Girbaud)Drakar and Obsession cologne. I thought I was the SH*T walking thru school with a radio beatin French Kiss and Time Marches ON. Using a fake I.D to get in the MEDUSA'S. I remember one week I hear Lil' Louis at MEDUSA'S they had this huge rubber tree in the middle of the dance floor. People were hanging off the branches. Straight jacking. Then the next week, they had a huge HOUSE in the middle of the floor. Ohhhh, I wish I could go back in time.....

The very best Lil. Louis "Hotel Party's was at the Hotel Continental"!
We talk about this to this date, evrybody was there. Old and new house head's alike in that era.
Who remember's the pajama jam he thru?
The other best of the best Lil. Louis party's was @ medusas!!!!
He snap one time and played french kiss when the club had wooden cage's up, everyone snap!!!
Then it was the play house theme, that was cute!
But one thing that tic me off about chicago was one night he played classic disco!!!
Love break, law of the land, never give you up, etc. And majority of the crowd kept yelling "Play some track's" but he didnt. I for one was happy that he played an all disco set.
Lil Louis..an chicago original!

nirvana

\Nir*va"na\, n. [Skr. nirv[=a][.n]a.] In the Buddhist system of religion, the final emancipation of the soul from transmigration, and consequently a beatific enfrachisement from the evils of wordly existence, as by annihilation or absorption into the divine.

******

1988 at the Bismarck... Lil' Louis spun me into ABSOLUTE NIRVANA.

I was on the dance floor and everything went black, all I could hear was music the voices around me had been drowned out, my heart was palpitating (sp?), I started smiling uncontrollably, I felt as light as a feather and I heard from my friends and eye-witnesses that I started screaming at the top of my lungs for no logical reason, then I blew my whistle and went to lay on the floor next to those giant speakers.

I tip my hat to Lil' Louis ever since. Very few dj(s) can put me into that state... in fact, there has only been 3 dj(s) to ever do so... Ron Hardy, Lil' Louis and DJ Rush.

Drug free, music induced NIRVANA.

Proof positive that MUSIC COMBINED WITH FREE FLOWING DANCING IS THE BEST DRUG ON EARTH!!!!

Hey I loved those medusa parties and bizmark parties. He used to play this one track that people called homework. I heard him play it at medusa and I went nuts. Some people said he made that track but all I know was it had a banging ass track with these loud ass electric strings it was some sick ass shit. I also remeber him playing snare crazy with them snares going crazy. But I must say I enjoyed him the most when I heard him play at Academy of our Lady (Longwood) in 1988. All my Brother Rice homies were dancing our ass off with some sexy ass catholic school girls. Damn those were the days.

hey nothing wrong with that because some of those girls were well I bet not say. One good thing about that party was he was on the basketball court right in front of us so we got to see him really bang that shit. First he took off the sport jacket. about 45 minutes into his set he comes out his shirt and beats the rest of the party sweating his ass off in a wife beater and a pair if slacks.

Yo! How off the chain was it when Louis would get sweaty on the decks? Whew, lawd. You know a dj is putting in some SERIOUS WORK when they start to get the MUSICAL SWEATS from just giving it to you on the decks. Goodness, goodness.

I vaguely remember a certain member of the Nu Bang Clan (I think I'm not sure???) coming to Whitney Young my sophmore year (1987/1988) and banging it out in the gym. We looked over to kinda give the DJ some praise and his forehead was raining --- I mean serious thunderstorm on the sweat tip. However, he was giving it to us little hyperactive house-head nerds at the "Y" right in the gym.

Absolutely...
Fabulous.

Ah now I see said the blind man. You were one of those smart young kids. One of my good friends stacy went to Whitney Young and she was a dj as well. One of the first girl dj's I met. She was sexy thin dark skinned girl who loved playing disco and we would play for hours in my room.
